Stirlingshire / Burke & Hare bodysnatchers & Helen MacDougal
« on: Monday 27 January 14 15:14 GMT (UK)  »
I am wondering if anyone might know the identity and ancestry of Helen M(a)cDougal, the companion of William Burke the bodysnatcher.  She was apparently a native of Redding, Stirlingshire and had 2 children by her lawful husband (name unknown) before taking up with a Sawyer named McDougal.  She abandoned her family and went with Burke to Peebles and then in 1827 to Edinburgh where they started murdering people.  After Burke's execution in 1829 it is thought that she moved to Newcastle in England and then possibly to Australia dying around 1868 (not sure about this).  Any assistance with this would be much appreciated. :-)

Lanarkshire / James Moodie MacKinnon b1846 at Glasgow
« on: Monday 19 August 13 08:10 BST (UK)  »
I am wondering if anyone might know what became of a James Moodie MacKinnon, who was born in 1846 at Glasgow the son of Peter MacKinnon and Grace Smith.  I have lost him after his wife Catherine died in 1888 at Glasgow.  He is described on her death entry as a House Factor and this is the profession that he gave in the 1881 census when he was living in Partick.

I cannot find a death entry for him at Scotland's People and cannot see him in the 1891/1901 Scottish census records.  His wife had some nieces who emigrated to Connecticut, USA, so I guess it is possible that he went there but I have already found them and he was not living with them.

I would be grateful for any assistance with this.

World War Two / Free French soldier billeted in Bexhill, Sussex
« on: Wednesday 09 January 13 11:15 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for any information that might be available on 2 Free French soldiers who were billeted in Bexhill, Sussex in 1944.

The first one is Jean Francois Simon, who was born around 1919 - possibly a French Commando who I believe took part in some sort of raid against the Germans. He survived the war and married a Hazel Weekes in Sussex in 1945.

I only have the second name of the other person and this is Roger(t).

I would be grateful for any assistance with this.

Lanarkshire / James Moodie MacKinnon
« on: Sunday 07 October 12 17:52 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to discover what became of James Moodie MacKinnon who was born in Glasgow in 1846 to parents Peter Mackinnon and Grace Smith.

James married a Catherine McFarlane in Glasgow in 1874 but she died in 1888 and I have lost track of him after that.  James and Catherine appear together in the 1881 census for Partick and at that time appear not to have had any children.

They had relatives that emigrated to Connecticut, USA, so I guess it is possible that he moved there after Catherine's death?

I would be grateful for any assistance in finding him.

Midlothian / Burke and Hare body snatchers - Margaret Laird
« on: Monday 20 August 12 11:52 BST (UK)  »
I am wondering whether anyone might know anything about the origins of Margaret Laird who became the wife of the body snatcher, William Hare, following the death of her 1st husband, James Logue or Loag, in 1826.

According to the IGI she married James Logue or Loag in 1814 at the Canongate, Edinburgh.  The IGI record gives her father's name as William Laird but there is no mention of her mother.

I would be grateful for any assistance with this.

World War One / Lieutenant Colonel Francis Chase Green-Price
« on: Tuesday 20 March 12 09:38 GMT (UK)  »
I am wondering whether anyone might have a photograph that they could share of Lieutenant Colonel Francis Chase Green-Price, who served in the Army Service Corps in North Eastern France during WW1.  I believe he also served in the Indian Army and WW11.

Ideally, any pictures of him from WW1 would be great but I would also be grateful for any other pictures of him.

His grandfather was a Baronet, so I am assuming that he came from a wealthy family!

World War One / Royal Army Service Corps - 126 Siege Battery
« on: Sunday 18 March 12 18:30 GMT (UK)  »
I know that this is a long shot but I am wondering whether anyone might have any photographs or stories about of the Royal Army Service Corps - 126 Siege Battery between 1916 and 1919.

My grandfather served with them and I am compiling a story about his experiences with them.  He fought in North Eastern France i.e. Bapaume area etc. before moving into Germany after the Armistace.

World War One / Murder of the Battery Major
« on: Saturday 03 March 12 09:40 GMT (UK)  »
My grandfather was in the Royal Army Service Corps 126 SB, and in 1918 he was in the area of the Somme.  In his diary he records how, on the 25th May 1918, the Battery Major was murdered when someone threw 2 bombs into his dug-out, while he was asleep.  He was buried the following day at Guizencourt.

I have been transcribing the diary and would like to identify who the Major was but cannot find him through the usual internet searches on Google/CWGC site etc.  I am wondering whether anyone might know who the victim was?
