Lancashire / Holden's of Westhoughton, Lancashire
« on: Tuesday 24 March 15 20:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I am trying to find out any information about a John & Betty Holden (b.1786) from Westhoughton.

On the 1841 Census They are listed with William 24, George 11, Mary 10 and Ellen (granddaughter) 18 Living at Lower Terrace, Little Bolton.

I can find a marriage certificate for William, 28 August, 1844 to Mary Graham, where his father is listed as John Holden, occupation Husbandman.

But that is all the information I can find.  I believe that they are also the parents of Richard Holden, born 1804/5, Westhoughton but can find no information to confirm this.

Richard married an Ann Bratherton 29 March, 1835 but I cannot find any other information before that date regarding Richard.  There are varying dates of birth for Richard on the Censuses from 1806 to 1811.

There is a baptism for a Richard b.1805 at Deane, Lancashire with parents Roger & Alice, but I am not sure if this is the right Richard as the marriage records do not record the father's name at that time.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks in advance.

Australia / Joseph Currall b. 1874 in Portsmouth Uk
« on: Tuesday 07 October 14 19:08 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out if Joseph Currall md to a Clara Currall (nee Colefield) emigrated to Australia between 1901 (last UK census, living in Wavertree, Liverpool with his mother Elizabeth and siblings) and 1911 as I cannot find him on any UK Census.  He was born in 1874 to parents Joseph Currall (b. 1846) and Eliza ! (Elizabeth) Chamberlain b. 1848 Queensferry, Cork, Ireland.  They married in Cork but Joseph was born in Portsmouth, UK. They then lived in Northampton and lastly in Liverpool.
The 1901 Census shows Joseph living with his mother and Clara living with her parents with their children.  On the 1911 Census I can find Clara Currall, Joseph Hugh Currall and Dorothy Clara Currall living with her sister in Poulton with Seacombe, Cheshire and she is described as married living on 'Private Means'.
I can also find Clara moving between the UK and Australia with her children a couple of times but nothing for Joseph.  Cannot find a registered death either :-(
If anyone can help I would be very grateful, thank you in advance

Dumfriesshire / Horace Holden and Family, Dumfries
« on: Wednesday 19 June 13 11:50 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information on my great uncle and his family. Horace Holden was born in Bolton, Lancashire in 1889 and married a Mary Hampson born 1887, also of Bolton in 1910.  They had three children that I know of, all born in Bolton; Thomas 1911, Maria 1914 and John  1921.  I don't know exactly when the moved to Dumfries but Maria married a Beuno (poss Bruno) MacFarlane on 14 December 1935 in Dumfries.  Horace is on the marriage certificate as being a Lace curtain finisher.
I have no information whatsoever on either Thomas or John  and it is these two that I would love to find out about, whether they married etc. I am sorry but I do not know if they are still living or not.  If anyone can be of any help in this matter I would love to hear from you.
On Maria's wedding certificate the address is Banks of Troqueer, Troqueer Road, Dumfries.
Thanking you in advance

Lancashire / Help please to solve a mystery. Pennycoop & Burgoyne.
« on: Sunday 06 January 13 23:20 GMT (UK)  »
My ancestor Mary Elizabeth Holden married a Thomas Francis Pennycoop (also spelt Penneycoop, Pennycoope, Pennycoops on various records) in Bolton in 1910. He had been married before to an Ada Bertha Glaister, also in Bolton. Ada's death is registered in 1900.
On the 1911 Census Thomas Francis (Pennycoope) lives on Mill Hill Terrace, Bolton and has his year of birth as 1873 and place of birth as Windsor, Lancashire; which I believe to be the old district of Windsor in Liverpool with his new wife Mary E (nee Holden) y/b 1799 p/b Bolton, son Thomas and new daughter Ivy with Thomas snr's occupation as Foreman in Bleachworks.
On the 1901 Census (Pennycoops) he is living on Mill Hill Terrace, Bolton but his y/b is 1872 and his p/b as Windsor, Bucks !!!! and he is with his only surviving child from his marriage with Ada, Thomas y/b 1899, p/b Bolton, his mother Elizabeth y/b 1836 p/b New Mills, Lancashire!!!! and his brother George y/b 1864 p/b Garstang!!!!!!, Lancashire.  Both Thomas snr and George's occupation is Stover.

Now the mystery is I cannot find any Pennycoop's on any Census before 1901.

I have found on the LOPC site for Lancashire Thomas & George's christening in 1890 address 34 William St, Tonge when they were 19 & 17 years old respectively, their parents noted as John and Elizabeth Pennycoop.
Also on the LOPC site under the name of Pennycook I have found marriages for a Martha Pennycook, occ: Card Tenter to a Matthew Stirling (poss correct spelling is Sterling) in 1881 in Bolton with her father down as John  Pennycook, Blacksmith, and a John Pennycook to an Elizabeth Hunt in 1888 in Bolton with his father as John Pennycook, Blacksmith.
I have looked on the 1891 Census at 34 William Street, Tonge and found the following living there:-
Eliza Burgoyne, Widow, Char woman, y/b 1839 p/b Derbyshire
her son's Thomas, Stover,  y/b 1872, p/b Liverpool and
son George, Stover, y/b 1874 p/b Garston, Lancashire
On looking on the 1881 Census in Bolton I find an Elizabeth Burgoyne and family at 19 Bk Brown St., Bolton.  The family are:-
Elizabeth Burgoyne, Widow, Char woman, y/b 1839, p/b New Mills, Derbyshire
Martha Burgoyne, Single, Card Tenter, y/b 1863 p/b Ireland
John Burgoyne, Single, App. Clogger, y/b 1867, p/b Liverpool
Thomas Burgoyne, Single, scholar, y/b 1871, p/b Windsor,
George Burgoyne, Single, scholar, y/b 1874, p/b Garson !!!!.
Unfortunately, I can find no birth records for Martha, John, Thomas & George Burgoyne or Pennycoop/Pennycook and I wouldn't know where to start looking for Eliza/Elizabeth Burgoyne's marriage.
As I live in France it is difficult for me to access records except for those online.
I know this is a difficult question to ask given all of the above but does anyone have a clue on how I can solve this mystery.  It also gets a bit more complicated as Thomas called himself PENNYCOOP after the 1890 christening and George called himself PENNYCOOK.
If anyone can give me any advice or assistance I would be really grateful.
Many thanks in advance.
Barbara Ann

p.s. so sorry for the long narrative :-)

Monaghan / Healy family of Castleblaney
« on: Sunday 02 December 12 21:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm looking for information regarding my g.grandmother Ellen Healy's (also could be Healey) family.
On the 1911 Census, she is married to my g.grandfather Patrick McInerney living in Liverpool and she gives her place of birth as Castleblaney (it has been transcribed as Castleclaney !!)
On the 1891 Census she is living with her parents Michael J Healey b.1856 Ireland and Mary J Healey  b.1858 Ireland and two siblings, Isabella b. 1883 Liverpool and Jessie b.1888 Liverpool (I can find no birth, marriage or deaths for either Isabella or Jessie on the bmd !!)
On the 1881 census they are down as Healy with Michael b. 1850 Galway and Mary Ann b1851 Monaghan with Ellen down as being born in Galway and various other siblings born Ireland/Liverpool.
If anyone can help with information on Michael, Mary, Ellen and Co before they moved to Liverpool I would be most grateful.

Lincolnshire / William Squires Holmes
« on: Friday 12 October 12 15:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I am finding it very difficult to find out any information about the above.  I do have a parish record of birth/baptism in Swineshead, Lincolnshire, giving his parents as Charles and Jane Holmes in 1823.  It gives the father's occupation as groom and abode as Linger House, Swineshead.
I have been unable to find out any reference to a Linger House in Swineshead, so if anyone can help with that I would appreciate it.
Also the parish record is the only record I have been able to find for William Squires Holmes.  If anyone can point me in the right direction on this as well I would be more than happy.

Lincolnshire / Drewry Charles Holms bap: 1825
« on: Thursday 13 September 12 23:19 BST (UK)  »
I have a real puzzle here.  I have been trying to trace my husband's family ancestors and I have become a bit stuck.
I have got his grandfather and great grandfather both called Charles Drury Holmes born Manchester 1891 and Halifax 1862 respectively and I thought that the ggfather's father was called John in Halifax (going by information on the censuses), and then I have both gfather and ggfather on the 1911 census for Lancaster.
But I have now come across a death registration in 1885 for a Charles Drury Holmes in Halifax age 61 which puts his yob as/or near 1824.
Now I have found on Family Search a DREWRY CHARLES HOLMS baptized on 25 04 1825 in Alford Lincolnshire, giving the father as Charles Holmes and the mother as Jane.
I cant find a Drewry Charles Holms on any census, birth or death record
.
I need any advice that can be given on how I solve this puzzle as I think it is too much of a coincidence that the names and yob are similar.

Any help would be really really appreciated.
