Derry (Londonderry) / Tracing Samuel Jamison/Jemison/Jamieson
« on: Saturday 01 July 17 14:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I am trying to trace more information on my Gt-Gt-Gt Grandfather Samuel Jamieson.  We know he was born 25.7.1821 in Ireland - Father James & Mother Agness.  He married Maria Scott 05.01.1849 in Maghera, Londonderry.  They moved to Scotland & we have census records for 1851 and they sailed to NZ and arrived in 1863 on board 'Captain Cook'.
I would like to find more of the family in Ireland, brother's/sister's, etc. and also his Mother's maiden name.
Would appreciate any help.
Thanks

The Common Room / Remittance immigrants
« on: Monday 17 October 16 01:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Hope someone can help.  I have found my Great-Grandfather Edward Bell who came to New Zealand from Carlislie and married Mary Amelia Hull.
It is known in the family that he was a 'remittance' person and we don't seem to have a definite definition of what this meant.  He had an allowance that was sent to him apparently from the UK.
His father was a Tanner, & I believe this was quite a prosperous position.  Some in the family say he got into trouble and was sent away.  Another person has suggested that as he was the third son it could have been he couldn't/wouldn't join the family business and was therefore sent away with an allowance.
Would be grateful if anyone could find more details for me.  From my research:
He was born in 1842
His father was John Bell who married Elizabeth Furniss
We can't find any information on passenger lists of him arriving in NZ.
Other siblings were:
Sarah Ann 1836
John F. 1840
William 1841
Mary Jane 1844

Ross & Cromarty / Grant Family - Contin
« on: Tuesday 19 May 15 02:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I am trying to trace more information of the Grants in Contin.  I have my Gt, Gt Grandfather Donald Grant married Agnes Tait and have census records 1851, 1861, 1871 & 1881.  My Gt Grandfather William came to New Zealand with his brother Andrew and we have all their family records.  We also have Jessie Grant who married John Roderick Aitken, but we can't find some of the other children; especially Lachlan.  Lachlan came to New Zealand at some stage and we have found his son James Aitken Alexander Grant born 1905 here in NZ.  We are not certain, but think Simon Grant may have gone to Australia.  Information found on a web site here in NZ: Grants of Willowbank, Temuka & Elloughton gives us some confirmation of our research.  In that article it also mentions William's cousin Simon McKenzie who came to NZ from Australia and we have found his family here in NZ but can't find the trace of him in Scotland i.e. parents.  We believe his family went to Australia and had a cattle/sheep station and he then came to NZ.  We have found Andrew Grant's son William Thomas Grant died in 1945 in Gunnedah, NSW so whether this is/was around where the McKenzie's settled we don't know, but would be grateful for help.  Obviously there is a strong tie between the Grants & McKenzie's which would suggest that my Gt Gt Grandfather's sister married a McKenzie??
Would be grateful for any information that can be traced.
Cheers

Kent / Richard Henry Binfield - Folkstone
« on: Saturday 08 November 14 10:09 GMT (UK)  »
I am helping a friend start her family tree and I have found some info, but details in NZ seem to be limited.  Her family name is Binfield and her father was Robert Edward and I have found that he is the son of Richard Henry, Mother Agnes.  I don't seem to be able to find any census reports, etc. in the Uk.  As yet I have not been successful in finding when he came to NZ and his brother Richard Harold also came to NZ. We have more details of marriages, etc. in NZ, but it is the UK links we would like to find??  Any help would be appreciated!

« on: Monday 18 March 13 04:38 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the movements of Lachlan Grant born Killmayle, Inverness abt. 1852.  The last census I have found for him is 1871 Shepherd, Kinnellan Farm.  His two brothers William & Andrew came to New Zealand first and I have found his sister Jessie also in New Zealand.  Sketchy info I have is 4 children James, Andrew, William & Tait; and died 1916 but can't find where he died either nor who he married.  Would appreciate any help.

Cheers

Sutherland / Alexander McKay
« on: Saturday 22 September 12 04:41 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find more information on Alexander McKay.

We have found him and his wife Margaret arriving at Lyttelton, New Zealand on board 'Royal Stuart' 1861.
Alexander 36 -  Shepherd from Sutherland
Margaret 28

This would make Alexander's birth ABT 1825 and Margaret ABT 1833

Ancestors here in New Zealand have a farm called 'Dornoch' which they believe has a connection??

Any help very much appreciated
