Australia / CORBETT James
« on: Friday 26 December 14 22:06 GMT (UK)  »
We have a mystery in my husband's family. Not much info is known of his grandfather's history and I'm hoping someone out there can help.

We have JAMES CORBETT m Eliza Anne O'Keefe nee Whyte, 1924 in NSW

JAMES parents were JOHN CORBETT and MARY FINN.

JAMES was born around 1881 in Melbourne, Victoria (according to dates on James' marriage and death certs.)

James didn't seem to keep in contact with any of his family. There was mention that he had been in the goldfields or diggings somewhere. I can't find his birth, or marriage of his parents Mary Finn and John. It is also said that his mother Mary had died and John had remarried.

I would be grateful of any help with this

Thankyou

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Mary McGuinness married to Patrick Docherty
« on: Thursday 21 June 12 11:30 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for MARY McGUINNESS / DOCHERTY, born 1833 in Ireland. Mary's parents were STEPHEN and MARGARET McGUINNESS who lived in County Cork, County Clare and King's County Ireland. MARY married PATRICK DOCHERTY in 1852 at Middle Church, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland and then emigrated in 1855 with her husband Patrick to Australia to join her mother Margaret, brother John and sisters Ellen and Eliza (Curton) who had emigrated earlier.
It is puzzling that she married in Scotland....how she came to be there. I am hoping someone can find her on a census before 1855, when she came to Aust. on board the Nepaul.

Thankyou in advance

« on: Wednesday 20 June 12 23:39 BST (UK)  »
On the 1851 Scotland Census, Patrick Docherty, of Nitshill Renfrewshire, has the occupation of "Labourer Allum". Does anyone know what Allum means in this context please.

Thanks in advance

Australia / Jane Brown nee HURST
« on: Friday 16 July 10 04:42 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I'm hoping someone might be able to see the arrival of JANE HURST in Sydney. On her death cert it has her as being born in Co. Tyrone but on her son's birth cert it has her birth in Fermanagh :-\. JANE seems to be born in 1838/39/40. She married WILLIAM BROWN in 1864 in Sydney and died in 1917 in Robertson NSW, being in the colony for 60yrs. JANE'S obituary doesn't tell us from where in Ireland she came but does say that she was 79yrs of age.

As far as I can tell she was approx 19yrs of age when she came to Aust and maybe in 1857/58.

I would appreciate some help with this as I can see 2 Jane Hursts (aged 19) arriving in 1857 & 1860 on PROVic website but not sure who I should be looking at and if this arrival was in Victoria  :-\ or if one of them is actually my gggrandmother.

Any help would be very much appreciated

Australia / Charles COX.....cert of freedom??
« on: Tuesday 29 June 10 10:32 BST (UK)  »
My gggrandfather, Charles Cox came to Australia as a convict exile on board "the Adelaide" in 1849. He was given a Ticket of Leave on disembarkation. My question is...do you think he would have applied later on for a Cert of Freedom or Pardon. He didn't marry till 1860.
I would be grateful of any thoughts. Many thanks

Australia / Where was Charles COX between 1849 and 1860
« on: Friday 29 January 10 20:17 GMT (UK)  »
I would be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction, please..........Charles Cox came to Aust. as a convict exile in 1849 and was issued with a Ticket-Of-Leave to work in the Illawarra. His obituary says that he worked for Henry Osborne. His marriage cert of 1860 has his residence as Dapto. We are trying to establish where Charles lived and worked 1849-60, as Henry Osborne owned many properties by his death in 1859.
Is there some record of wages/workers who were employed by Henry Osborne ? I'm not sure where to start looking.

« on: Tuesday 25 August 09 00:51 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I'm hoping someone can help me with this query.
We have a William White, who was killed by a falling tree in the churchyard of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Burrawang. His death was in 1872. My question is this... Would there have been a coroner's inquest and if there was, where would I find the results.
Grateful of any help

Sussex / obtaining birth certs before 1837 in Brighton
« on: Tuesday 24 March 09 23:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

Could someone please tell me how to go about getting birth certificates for the children of Edward and Hannah Cox. The children seem to have been baptised at St Nicholas' Brighton, the first baptism being Robert in 1825. I am particularly interested in their son Charles (my gggreatgrandfather) who was born about 1828.

Appreciate any help with this

Occupation Interests / turncock at waterworks, Brighton
« on: Friday 20 March 09 11:10 GMT (UK)  »
My gggreatgrandfather, Edward Cox, was described as a turncock at The Waterworks in Brighton on the 1841 - 1861 census'. He lived for a time at the Reservoir Cottage with his family. I would like to know how Edward would have got this job and what the wage was. I am trying to establish what sort of background he had......did he originally come from a farming background or some other sort of labouring job?

I would be grateful of any help with this
