Galway / Ffrench & Lynch Families Tuam Galway
« on: Friday 30 September 22 09:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I'm looking for information on 2 sisters born in Devon England but married into the Ffrench & Lynch Families of Tuam, Galway. Amelia France ALDRICH & Frances Mary Emma ALDRICH daughters of a C of E Clergyman from Brixham, Devon.

Amelia is recorded in the 1841 UK Census aged 25. working as a Governess in Brixham

there is no record of her in the 1851 UK census perhaps she was in Ireland. She married a Ffrench around this time I am unable to access my Family tree on the PC atm but from memory her husband was "Mark Joseph Ffrench"

In the 1861 UK census she is back in Brixham with her father Charles ALDRICH & youngest sister Frances ALDRICH & she is recorded as married "wife of a private Gentleman" her husband was not with her

in the 1871 UK census she is recorded as married but working as a Governess in Lancashire husband not with her.

nothing in the 1881 & 1891 UK census guessing she was back in Ireland

1901 Ireland Census she is a Widow living with her sister Frances Lynch, her husband Charles Lynch (a landowner) & their Grandson Jack Sexton in Carrowbeg

I am hoping these sisters are recorded in Ireland during these missing Census returns

Frances disappears from the UK records after the death of her father in 1864...I don't believe Amelia had children of her own but Frances may have the names Neptune LYNCH & Susan LYNCH come to mind.

I believe there is a connection between the Ffrench & Lynch Families around this time

Amelia was born in Brixham, Devon 1817
Frances was born in Stonehouse, Devon 1843

both sisters married in R.C. Church in Ireland

                                                      Thanks

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Lane/Devonshire
« on: Sunday 22 April 18 08:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I'm hoping someone out there can confirm some information for me.

Information I had recorded on my ancestor Sarah (Selina) Lane-no date of Birth but Baptised 30th Dec 1818 in Finsbury, London Parents John Lane (Shoemaker) & Mary Ann Devonshire. She Emigrated  to Australia arriving 22/4/1838 aboard the Duchess of Northumberland

I lost a lot of my data when my PC crashed so have no documentation to refer to.

I have recently found 2 trees on Ancestry with conflicting information.

One giving a date of Birth for Sarah as 24/9/1818 in London & Baptism 4/10/1818 in Stockland Dorset (confusing)

Both giving the Birth of a sister Mary Ann Lane in the same year 1818 in St Ann Westm (Westminster?) Middlesex (no dates) & a Base Born brother Joseph born 20/2/1814 with a ? as to whether he was baptised as a "Lane" or a "Devonshire"

It is also claimed that Sarah Emigrated in 1834 aboard the David Scott at the age of 16 while her parents would still have been alive in England ?

I would appreciate the confirmation of any of this information. I am starting to doubt my own research.

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / McArthur Family emigration
« on: Monday 19 March 18 00:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone

Hoping someone can help locate this family as I cannot access records outside the UK atm

1851 Scottish Census - Colliertree Lanarkshire

John McArthur, 52yrs, born Campbellton, Argyleshire, Scotland, Coal miner
Margaret McArthur, 45yrs, wife, born Crawford Lanarkshire
Janet McArthur, 21yrs, daughter, born Cambusneath Lanarkshire
Archibald McArthur, 16yrs, son, born New Monkland Lanarkshire
Jane McArthur, 12yrs, daughter, born New Monkland Lanarkshire
Agnes McArthur, 9yrs, daughter, born New Monkland
Margaret McArthur, 8yrs, daughter, born New Monkland
Elizabeth McArthur, 2yrs, daughter, born New Monkland
Janet Crawford, 80yrs, Mother in Law, born Crawford Lanarkshire, Pauper

after this census return the family drop off the grid in Scotland

my main interest is with Margaret snr whose maiden name was WATT & Janet WATT (Crawford) I don't know why she is recorded in this census under her maiden name. Where did they end up & did Janet travel with them?

Margaret's brother William Watt (my ancestor) emigrated to America with half his family in 1865 so it's possible they followed the McArthur's...2 sons remained in Scotland, 3 children emigrated to Australia & at some point some ended up in N.Z.

I would be grateful for anything

US Lookup Requests / Watt Family Scotland to USA
« on: Wednesday 07 March 18 02:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

I am looking for some info on the Watt Family who emigrated from Lanarkshire, Scotland to USA in 1856. The information I have is that William & Jane Watt arrived in New Castle Delaware in 1856 along with 7 of their 11 Children. However, I am only certain that the youngest 4 Janet, Thomas, Archibald & Alexander traveled with them.
I know that the eldest Robert remained in Scotland
John & William had already emigrated 4 years earlier
Elizabeth remained in Scotland until the 1880's then emigrated to Australia

I know that David & Jane emigrated to Australia, according to Jane's obituary she & David traveled  together but not sure if they went to USA 1st & then on to Australia cannot find any record of their entry. Also it has been mentioned by Watt family descendants in the U.S. that David went "walkabouts" & was not seen by the family again (he is my ancestor so I know he came to Australia)

Also James did he emigrate with the rest of the family, he is not recorded in the 1861 Scottish Census but reappears for the 1871. Maybe he emigrated but chose to return to Scotland?

Also "Archibald Milligan Watt" info that I have states that he died in Kent Minnesota in 1894 but I am unsure where this info came from or if it is even correct.

I would be grateful for any help with this geographically diverse family

New Zealand Completed Requests / Elizabeth Jackson
« on: Sunday 26 November 17 08:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone

I've been searching for a death for my ancestor Elizabeth Jackson (nee WATT)

Elizabeth emigrated to NSW Australia sometime after 1881 with her husband Archibald & her younger children...Her son William Jackson & his wife Jane (nee LITHGOW) followed a short time later...William & Jane had 7 children in NSW. When Archibald died in 1905 Elizabeth seems to fall off the grid, as does William, Jane & there children...I recently found a death for William Lithgow Jackson on the N.Z. BDM & I'm now wondering if William, Jane & family emigrated to N.Z. taking the elderly Elizabeth with them. Not sure where to start on this as the N.Z. BDM doesn't give parents names for comparison...can anyone help please

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Gibb/Atkins family Liverpool area
« on: Sunday 29 May 16 12:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I feel I am continually banging my head against a brick wall with this family, so sorry, but I'm going to give you all I Have...hoping someone more knowledgeable than me can help.
Hoping to find them in the 1861 census which has proved impossible.
John Gibb married Mary Woosey 16/6/1828 St Phillips Liverpool
Children:
John 1831 Liverpool..no birth or baptism record found
Mary 20/1/1833 Liverpool
Jane 1835 Liverpool..no birth or Bapt record
Eliza 12/10/1837 Liverpool
James Bezaleel 29/7/1839 Liverpool

John Gibb dies 9/4/1840 Liverpool
Mary remarries Hugh Atkin/Atkins/Aitkin 1841 Liverpool
Children:
Robert Apr/jun 1842 Liverpool
Hugh 1844-1847 Liverpool
Thomas Apr/Jun 1847 Liverpool
Sarah Apr/Jun 1849 Liverpool

1841 Census HO107/555/13 Folio 18
Plumbe St, Liverpool
Mary Gibb, 30 yrs, Shopkeeper
Mary Gibb, 8 yrs
Jane Gibb, 6 yrs
Eliza Gibb, 3 yrs
James Gibb, 2 yrs
Catherine Jones, 15 yrs, F.S. all born in County

The 1851 census which I have just accidentally deleted names Mary's new family
Husband Hugh Atkin
children Robert, Thomas & Sarah Atkins as well as sons John & James Gibb.
I cannot find them in the 1861 cenus...by this time husband Hugh Atkins is dead.
Son John Gibb & Daughter Mary Gibb have emigrated to Australia.
I believe Daughter Jane Gibb has married John Bowker as all info seems to fit but then she disappears.
John Gibb sponsors the assisted immigration of Sister Eliza Gibb, mother Mary Atkins & sister Sarah Atkins but only Eliza emigrates to Australia.
Mary Atkins dies in West Derby 13/12/1870, Sarah's wherabouts are unknown
The fact that John Gibb only sponsors his mother & half sister Sarah suggests that Robert & Thomas Atkins have also died...the 1861 census could shed some light but I can find nothing...except for the emigrations to Australia the family seem to stay in the Liverpool area or at the very least Lancashire.

To much info I know, I apologise, but frustrated I am, I will be extremely grateful for any info

Somerset Lookup Requests / baptism - St John The Baptist, Frome
« on: Sunday 27 March 16 08:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone

I am looking for the baptism record of Joseph Hillard...census records & age at death give his date of birth at mid to late 1811...1851 census gives place of birth as Shepton Beauchamp, but I've been unable to find any record of his baptism there...I have his parents recorded as John Hillard & Martha Symonds who married in Crewkerne in Dec 1810.

Joseph married in Crewkerne in 1834 but all 8 of his children were born in Shepton Beauchamp & Joseph died there in 1853.

I know this is a long shot but found a baptism for a Joseph "Allard" on freereg 17/8/1811 in St John the Baptist Frome father Joseph, Mother Martha & can't help but wonder if this could be him.
If anyone out there has access to the actual parish record could they please check the spelling in case this has been an error in transcribing

                               I would be most appreciative
