Sutherland / John Maclean of Helmsdale

John Maclean of Helmsdale

It is known that during the 1860s the firm of Henderson, Glasgow, had a branch in Reykjavik Iceland for the purpose of exporting fish products to Britain. It is also recorded that on April 27 1862 the post ship Arcturus arrived in Iceland carrying four scotsmen to work at the plant, one of which may well have been John Maclean of Helmsdale. He was a journeyman cooper and his job may have been the building of barrels for salt fish. He may have left Iceland in late 1863. However, while in Iceland he met María Elisabet Kristjánsdottir and she named him as the father of the child she gave birth to in the Spring of 1864, Charlotta María Jónsdottir. The famous Icelandic book of genealogy, Islendingabók names the father as John MacLean of Helmsdale, born 1840.
I have identified a John Maclean, born Helmsdale 1832, father Alexander a shoemaker. There is reason to distrust the Icelandic date and Helmsdale could have been a general description. He appears to have left Iceland before the child was born and may have left the impression that he would return. If he gave his true date of birth 1840, I cannot find any other John MacLean of Helmsdale. In naming the child, María comes from the mother and it is possible that the father suggested the name Charlotte/charlotta, as the letter 'C' does not exist in the language. John Maclean may have had a relative with that name or often mentioned such a person.
The CV of John MacLean born 1832 is known until he died in Wallsend on Tyne in 1906 and there is a gap when he could have been in Iceland, but this is not proof. I would be obliged if someone can suggest another John Maclean born in the general area of Helmsdale born around 1840 and known to have gone to Iceland or who was related or connected in some way with someone called Charlotte, as that name seems to have been quite common around Helmsdale.

Regards,
             Helmsdale

Northumberland / John Malcolm Maclean, 1870 -1944.

John Malcolm Maclean, 1870 -1944 (Died Canada).

John Malcolm MacLean was born in Felling on Tyne in June 1870, to Elizabeth Gray and John MacLean of Helmsdale, Sutherland. By the time of the 1891 census he was no longer living with his parents and siblings at 7 Equitable Street, Wallsend on Tyne, being around 20 years of age. Nothing more was heard of him north of the Tyne until April 1920 when he married Miriam Mary Clark at Tynemouth Register office; their address at the time being 3 Upper Penman Street, North Shields. Following the wedding the couple emigrated to Canada on July 19th 1920 on SS Melita, according to the passenger declaration, and have a grand daughter living there.
Miriam Clark was born in 1898 and lived formerly at 16 Victoria Avenue, Hirst, Ashington; father Christopher (miner); mother Rose Leah, housewife.
There is thus a gap from 1891 to 1920 in the CV of John Malcolm MacLean, but in order to meet Miriam Clark it is reasonable to assume that he was living and working at no great distance from Ashington, probably as a grocer, as stated on the declaration.
I would be grateful if anyone in the Rootschat community could add details to the life of John Malcolm Maclean in the years 1891 – 1920, such as residence, occupation, place of work etc, including possible census images for the years 1901 and 1911.

Kind regards,
           Helmsdale

Durham / John & Elizabeth MacLean, Wood View, Beamish, Durham

In 1911 John MacLean and Elizabeth Hannah MacLean, (nee Hall) both age 40 were living with their niece Elizabeth Cumming age 18 at Wood View, Beamish, County Durham. John was general manager for the Cooperative Society and must have worked in one of the local branches.
Earlier in 1901 they were living at High Hold near Pelton County Durham, and earlier still in 1891 Elizabeth Hall, yet unmarried was living as a boarder with Eliza McDonald at High Handenhold, near Pelton, Chester le Street, county Durham.
The couple were married in 1893 in the registration district of Chester le Street
John was born in Felling on Tyne and had parents and family in Wallsend on Tyne.

Can anyone tell me what happened to this couple after the census of 1911?
I would be obliged for your help.

Regards, Helmsdale

Northumberland / John & Jane MacLean 7 North Road, Wallsend.
« on: Sunday 07 October 12 19:06 BST (UK)  »
I am interested in information concerning the family of widower John MacLean (born Helmsdale, Sutherland) who lived many years at 7 North Road, Wallsend. John MacLean senior died in 1906, but two of his children, John and Jane remained there until 1920 at least.
Jane is mentioned at that address on July 19th, !920 on a sailing ticket to Canada where John is recorded as sailing on the SS Melita bound for Quebec, meeting on the way his brother Henry already living in Surrey, Vancouver, British Columbia.
Jane is simply recorded as next of kin living in the north of England at the above address and it is Jane who I am mainly interested in, as she clearly remained at the obove address when her brother John left. I would be grateful if anyone can shed light on the life of Jane Maclean subsequently.

Sutherland / John Maclean and Alexander Maclean, Helmsdale
« on: Thursday 17 May 12 22:23 BST (UK)  »
Further to the research below on behalf of Charlotta María Guðmundsdóttir of Kópavogi, Iceland, I am also interested in information about Alexander Maclean age 5 at the 1871 census living at Upper Helmsdale in the Parish of Kildonan. He was living with Alexander Maclean and his wife Isabella Maclean as their Nephew. His place of birth was England, which leads me to believe that he was the son of John Maclean below.

At the 1851 census John Macdonald, grandparent, Jane Maclean (Nee Macdonald) widow of Alexander Maclean, and children John, Barbara and Alexander, were living at East Helmsdale. Does anyone have them in their family tree?

I would be greatly obliged if someone could add details to the life of John Maclean who claimed to have been born in Helmsdale in 1840. Some time later in Iceland, around 1862 he entered a relationship with Elísabet María Kristjánsdóttir and in 1864 she gave birth to a daughter, Charlotta María Jónsdóttir. His name and year of his birth was recorded in the Islendingabók when their daughter was christened.
According to family tradition, while his daughter was still an infant, John Maclean announced his intention of returning to Scotland for reasons now unknown. Although he promised to return, he did not do so and nothing more was heard of him until many years later when solicitors, possibly on his death, tried to contact the family on his behalf through adverts in Icelandic newspapers. Although she became aware of this, such was her bitterness that Charlotta María Jónsdóttir refused to respond.
Charlotta María Guðmundsdóttir of Kópavogi, Iceland, his great great, granddaughter, would like to solve this great mystery. Elísabet María Kristjánsdóttir later emigrated to Winnipeg with a new partner, though without Charlotta María Jónsdóttir. We would be grateful for information on his early life and his Scottish relatives in Helmsdale, though this place of birth may only be approximate. We would also like to know if he returned to Helmsdale on his return, or some other part of Scotland or even emigrated.

Regards, Helmsdale.

Latest:  With the help of the census data on Scotland's people I think I am now on the trail of John Maclean. In the Icelandic Islendingabók his date of birth was given as 1840 and this has proved reliable rather than age 15 in the 1851 census, probably entered by grandfather John Macdonald as head of the house. He now shows up at Stoer, Sutherland in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 census. Between 1861 and 1871 he fathered a child in Iceland in 1864.
By 1891 he moved to Carloway,  Ross and Cromarty and in 1901 there is another match in Caloway. He does not appear on the 1911 census where he would have been 71 and either died or moved again. Carloway is the last known place. Can anyone in Carloway help?
