London and Middlesex / Sarah Sutton's (1822-1891) novels?
« on: Wednesday 04 September 19 20:05 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the titles of books, newspapers, or magazines Sarah Sutton (1822-1891) wrote or edited, and when they were published.
She edited the:
"The Englishwoman’s Review and Home Newspaper," (1857-59)
Said to be an editor of the "London Review," (_____), but she might not have been.

The 1881 census said she was a novel writer. Could she have written or edited the following?:

"Mad Marshall: or, a Life in the village of C-." By the author of Useless Riches [i.e. Sarah Sutton], etc. John MARSHALL, of the village of C-. London : W. H. Guest & Co, 1885.

"Worthy Workers. A monthly magazine for all, etc. [Edited and partly written by Sarah Sutton.] no. 1. March 1886"

England / Marriage puzzle & mystery son
« on: Saturday 19 May 18 07:04 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor's sister Ann Gleaves married James Wilson 16 Oct 1837, in St. Peter and St. Paul, Aston, Warwickshire, and married William Bailey, 21 Feb 1841, St. Martins, Birmingham, Warwickshire. When she married the second time she was listed "Ann Gleaves" a spinster. I thought divorces were difficult to get during this time period, and only the really rich could get them. Ann Gleaves's father was a brazier/tinman, and if I am not mistaken the family had factory jobs. So how could she get married a second time with her maiden name and be listed as a spinster?

She had a son Edward Gardener Bailey, born 21 May 1837 (according to his baptism record), in Warwickshire, and baptized 12 Jul 1841, in St. Martin's, Birmingham, to add to the confusion. It said his parents were William and Ann Bailey. On the 1841 census it just lists him as Edward Gardner, age 4. That is all I can find on him.

United States of America / Aaron Williams of Danville, PA
« on: Saturday 03 February 18 15:15 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for great grandmother's uncle Aaron Williams.
After not having much luck I found this possiblity.

Aaron Williams, born Nov 1835 (or 1836, 1839) in South Wales or England.  He married Mary Birt about 1863. She was previously married to and later divorced from John Richings.  (I haven't see the divorce record.)  The 1900 census said Aaron immigrated in 1860, and was naturalized.  He died 2 Jan 1906, Mahoning, Montour, Pennsylvania, USA - from death certificate (it doesn't give a birthdate or parents).

He was on the:
1870 census in Danville Ward 4, Montour, Pennsylvania, USA.

1880 census in Danville, Montour, Pennsylvania, USA, on Uppermulberry Street.

1900 census in Danville Ward 2, Montour, Pennsylvania, on Wall Street
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M3QR-MKK

He has a will probated 14 Jan 1906, Montour, Pennsylvania.

I cannot find his marriage record or immigration records.  Where would I find or order his marriage record and could it possibly give his parents's names?  I would appreciate any information or clues.

United States of America / Death for Christian Simensen Lium
« on: Monday 30 October 17 16:01 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find some kind of death or burial record for Christian Simensen Lium. He was born 8 Dec 1846, Liums-eie, Follebu, Østre Gausdal, Oppland, Norway. He married Oliane Olsdatter, 23 Nov 1869 in Østre Gausdal. He left Østre Gausdal 5 June 1880 for America, and sailed on the ship Indiana from Liverpool to Philadelphia, arriving 1 Jul 1880.  Oliane Olsdatter left Østre Gausdal 9 May 1881 for America (with Jorgine Jacobsdatter Lium).  Christian Simensen is listed on a 1885 city directory of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.  In the USA he is listed as Christian/Christ Simensen & Christian/Christ/Chris Lium.  He is on the 1900 & 1910 US census in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.  His brother Carl "Charles" Simonsen Lium's widow Oliane Jacobsdatter Simensen Lium (1858-1939) is living next door to or with them.  Christian's wife Oliane Olsen Lium died 28 Aug 1916 in Eau Claire (was listed as Mr. Chris Lium in the "Eau Claire Leader" newspaper), and was buried at Northside Lutheran Cemetery, Eau Claire, Wisconsin.  He is living at that time of his wife's obituary, but I don't see any mention of him after that.  Oliane (Jacobsdatter) Simensen is on the 1920 census for Eau Claire, but I don't see her brother-in-law Christian.

The Common Room / Looking for Jethro Williams 1871 census
« on: Friday 25 August 17 15:09 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for this family on the 1851 and 1871 censuses.

1861 Wales Census
Abersychan, Trevethin, Monmouthshire, Wales
Varteg Hill
John Williams, head, 37, coal miner, born Shropshire
Elizabeth Williams, wife, 34, born Dowlais, Glamorgan
John Williams, son, 14, coal miner, Trevethin, Monmouth
Jethro Williams, son, 8, scholar, Trevethin, Monmouth
William Williams, son, 8 months, Trevethin, Monmouth

The wife Elizabeth maiden name might be Waine (see the family above them on the 1861 census record. Her parents might be William Wayne & Mary James, and are listed on the 1851 census in Abersychan).  If so, perhaps they were married Jul-Sep 1853, in Pontypool District, Monmouthshire, (maybe John Williams & Elizabeth Wine), and it would appear that John had a previous marriage.

There are two Jethro Williams possibilities listed on the birth index:
One born Apr-Jun 1853, Pontypool District, mother's maiden name Smith.
One born Jan-Mar 1854, Pontypool District, mother's maiden name Wynn.
One of these died: Jethro Williams died Oct-Dec 1854, Pontypool District.

I am hoping the father John Williams might be my great-great grandmother's brother.  Here is my former query about my great-great grandmother Mary Ann William's family:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=651332.msg4977567#msg4977567

I have found a Jethro/Jefferson Williams, born cal 1853, Wales, that immigrated to Illinois, USA, but I am not sure if it is him.  If he was the one that arrived in 1873 in New York City, then it appears he came by himself.  I have traced this possible Jethro a bit.

England / Margaret Singleton, orphan from England
« on: Sunday 04 June 17 06:07 BST (UK)  »
My sister hit a brick wall on her daughter-in-law's genealogy on Margaret Singleton, and needs help.

Margaret Singleton married Charles Addison Dell on 22 Feb 1893, in Welland, Ontario, Canada. She was 25, resided in Crowland (Township in Welland), and was born in England, and it has ditto marks where her parents names should have been.  From her marriage until her death her birth year ranges from 1868-1872 (from her age on her marriage, census records, and her newspaper death notice).  Her husband, born 1871, was younger than her.

The family said Margaret was born in England, and that she was an orphan, and her records were destroyed in a church fire. But they don't know the name of the church or where it was.

On the 1891 Canadian census was a Maggie Singleton, age 26, Domestic - GEa_ Family Servt., in Crowland Township, Welland, Ontario.  I cannot see any other Singletons at that time in Crowland or Welland.

On the Library and Archives Canada, Home Children, 1869-1932 Database, is a Margaret Singleton, age 7, departed from Liverpool 1871-06-15 and arrived 1871-06-26 in Quebec on the ship Prussian, sent by Maria Rye, destination was Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.  1878 Rye Report - #288 Frontenac, Kingston.

On the 1871 English census is a Margaret Singleton, age 6, born in Liverpool, scholar, in the Liverpool Industrial Schools, Kirkdale, Lancashire.

I copied the Margaret Singletons born in 1863-1865 on the English Birth Index, and eliminated all of them but Margaret Singleton, mother's maiden name Jackson, born April-June 1864, in Preston district, Lancashire.  She doesn't seem to have any siblings.  Her parents must be Thomas Singleton (age 22, father John Singleton) and Jane Jackson (age 21, father John Jackson), who married 16 Aug 1863, Saint John, Preston, Lancashire. On the death index there is a Jane Singleton, age 25, who died April-June 1866 in Preston district; and a Thomas Singleton, age 37 (if her father his age is 7 years off from his age at marriage), who died Jan-Mar 1871 in Preston district.

My questions are:
What happened to the Preston born Margaret Singleton?
Could the Preston born Margaret Singleton have gone to the Liverpool Industrial Schools?
It gave her birth as Liverpool, could that be a mistake, or is it possible Margaret Singleton's birth was never registered?
Would a child from the Liverpool Industrial Schools be sent to Canada with the Maria Rye group?
Is there more Maria Rye group records?
What church records were destroyed in a church fire in the Liverpool or Preston area?

Canada / British Home Children - 5 siblings
« on: Saturday 22 April 17 00:19 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor's nephew James Greaves, Jr., of Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, had 9 children.  His wife died when the youngest was a little over a year old and the oldest 18 years.  James was an invalid from the affects of war, and became a patient in the workhouse infirmary.

The 3 oldest sons: Percy James, Cecil George, & Joseph Clarence were able to take care of themselves.  The next 5: Violet Alicia Agnes, Daisy Louisa Jane, Charles Arthur Edward, Nellie Elizabeth Rose, & Lily Ethel were sent to Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1901.  The youngest Elizabeth May was adopted by a family in England.

I am having a hard time tracing Nellie Elizabeth Rose Greaves, born 26 Nov 1894, in Aston or Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.  She married David James Cota, 29 Oct 1918, in Frontenac, Ontario, Canada.  When David James Cota died 14 Aug 1935, in Hastings, Ontario, Canada, his wife was listed as Ethel Cota.  So what happened to Nellie?  One tree says Nellie married an "unknown Spicer."

The 1949 Canada, Voters List for Hastings South, Ontario, #345 & #346 are: William Spicer, guard, 9 Dundas St. W. & Mrs. Nellie Spicer, 9 Dundas St. W.  Another family tree has a William Francis Spicer (1882-1921) who also lived in Trenton, Hastings, Ontario, Canada, married after the 1921 census to a "Cote."

I correspond with a grandniece of the 5 children who went to Canada.  She just learned about them being sent to Canada and would like to know what happened to them.

The youngest Elizabeth May married Robert Astle in Birmingham, England.  After Robert died in 1952, she went to Canada, where it is believed she remained.  She sailed from Liverpool, England, 25 Nov 1952, to Halifax, Canada, on the ship Ascania.   I would love to find her also.  She was born 17 October 1899, in Aston or Birmingham, Warwickshire, England

Europe / What records are available for Wallertheim, Hessen?
« on: Thursday 09 March 17 19:29 GMT (UK)  »
My sister is helping someone with their genealogy.  His Neirstheimer family came from Wallertheim, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, in 1868.

I don't know anything about Hessen research.  What records are there for Wallertheim and how can they be accessed?  Thanks.
