Dorset / William Budden (1744)
« on: Monday 30 March 20 11:49 BST (UK)  »
I have been looking for a marriage for a William Budden (born 1744) in Dorset after finding a gravestone  image showing that he had a second wife Susanna. I did a search using the card catalogue set to Dorset marriages (see attachment) It returned 2 documents for the marriage. With the difference in dates I thought one would be the banns and the later one the marriage, but on opening them I found they both were for a marriage. I have found 2 records before in different formats for the same person, but the dates have always matched.
Is this just an error, perhaps a deferment of the marriage or is the earlier one in fact the banns.
Any help would be appreciated.

World War One / RN deaths
« on: Saturday 13 July 19 15:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone

I have recently found a death for one of my relatives. He was on the HMS Princess Royal and died on 7 August 1915. The CWGC site gives no details but I found another naval death list (attached) but am no closer to finding out how he died. His death (under Cause) is listed a 3, but I have searched in vain for what this means. From other similar documents I don't believe he was killed in action. Can anyone enlighten me as to what the numbers on the attached document mean.

Hi
I think I've correctly traced one of my forebears through the censuses but am confused about who he married.
He was William Henry Steele (sometimes Steel) son of Charles and Barbara (born 1867)
On the 1901 census (RG13/189929/9) he is William H, a plasterer,  married to a Louisa with children Gertrude and Walter. Checking GRO their mother was called Woodford. On 1911 census (RG14PN5874 RG78PN267 RD95 SD2 ED43 SN36) he is a plasterer married to a Louie, which I believe is a variation of Louisa with now 3 children all with a mother called Woodford.
However I can't find a marriage anywhere for a William Henry Steele to a Louisa Woodford. I found a marriage for William Henry Steele to a Lucy French (Sep 1890 in New Forest) and a marriage for a Harry Steel to a Louisa Woodford (Jun 1887 Christchurch).
My inclination is to go with Harry but I think it is unusual for someone named William Henry to be married under a nickname. Can anyone help me to decide which one is correct? Your help would be much appreciated. ??? ???

Occupation Interests / CR1/2
« on: Tuesday 09 October 18 15:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I've just found a CR1 and CR2 for a relative of mine. His CR1 was impounded because someone else appears to have used his card for a voyage. I have tried to find out what the regulation was but with no success. Can anyone point me in the direction of the regulations or what the punishment was for giving your cards to someone else. Would there be a record of the punishment received? I've attached images of the relevant parts

The Common Room / UK Asylum Records
« on: Wednesday 10 January 18 11:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I have just found a record of one of mine having been in an asylum. Apart from the obvious headings the discharge ones are a bit of a puzzle. (See attached) I believe that the first reason is "Recovered". The second I think is "Released" but the third is a mystery to me "Not Impd". I've tried Ancestry to no avail and searched the forum with no success. Is there anyone who can enlighten me?

The Common Room / GRO Index Entry
« on: Saturday 30 December 17 09:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I have found a GRO birth index entry on Find My Past for Barry AM Garden Jun Q 1916 in Wandsworth. This is confirmed by FreeBMD. However when I tried to cross reference it with the GRO index I got a different result with additional wording "Occasional copy: A"
Can anyone help with an explanation of the additional wording. My only thought was that the FindMyPast listing was the original listing and the GRO index is current and up to date so perhaps he changed his name. Has anyone one another explanation?
I have attached the relevant entries
Hoping someone can help

Occupation Interests / Coal Mining Occupation
« on: Saturday 13 May 17 15:45 BST (UK)  »
I was reviewing a 1939 register entry for one of my ancestors and came across an occupation I cannot decipher. I have been on the Durham and Welsh sites recommended by others in this forum but can't find the occupation.
I have attached an image and hope that someone can enlighten me.

1939 Register reference is 7324J-009 XJGY line 39 for Albert Jay.

Thanks

Census and Resource Discussion / 1939 census linked query.
« on: Saturday 02 April 16 12:20 BST (UK)  »
On looking for relatives on the 1939 census I came across an entry that made me wonder whether it was only marriages that occurred after 1939 that were recorded on the 1939 registration form.
My reason for asking is that I have found an entry on the 1939 census that shows that one of my ancestors later changed her name from Rose Merrifield to Rose Shelley. (RG101/6923E/002/29 Letter Code: WKEY). My first thought was that Mr Merrifield had died and she remarried but her husband didn't die till 1974 and I can find no divorce or remarriage (internet searches only) for a Rose Merrifield to a Shelley. I have found her death in 1973 recorded under both Merrifield and Shelley so it seems she may have been cohabiting with Mr Shelley.
I can understand why, for appearances sake, a man and woman living together would want to share the same surname and might therefore register a change but did people need their identity card to obtain new ration books. If so, then  Is there anyone who knows about rationing in the 40s and 50s who can tell me what was likely to have happened.
I've come across articles about rationing and identity cards but none mention what identification, if any, a person needed to obtain a ration book.
I wonder if you are able to shed any light on this.
Thanks

The Common Room / Two marriages for the same couple 3 years apart
« on: Wednesday 09 September 15 15:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone
I have found two parish marriage records for the same couple 3 years apart. The only explanations that I can come up with are:
a. they divorced and remarried, but the timescale seems a bit short or
b. they renewed their vows but 3 years on from the first marriage seems a bit soon and I don't think that a renewal of vows would be entered in the register as a new marriage. Both marriages have been recorded by GRO. Can anyone shed any light on any other reasons.
There is a marriage allegation made on the same date as the first marriage, both living in different parishes and at different addresses. The second was three years later and again both appear to be living at different addresses.
The parties involved are Phyllis Edith Ruault and Marcus de la Poer Beresford. On Ancestry there is a marriage allegation and two parish records of the marriages. The marriages are in 1907 and 1910
I'm puzzled so any help would be appreciated
