Photograph Resources, Tips, Tutorials / Photo editing question
« on: Monday 30 October 23 17:26 GMT (UK)  »
I have been using Microsoft Windows 10 photo editing to do simple fixing of family photos--red eye, clarity, some color correction.  Now they have replaced that with a new program? software? that is useless.  It does none of those things.  Can anyone recommend something simple, even if it's not free?  I'm not in a league with many people here in terms of restoration but this has left me--and a lot of others--very frustrated.  I'd really appreciate some advice.

Ireland / Anyone know if Y-IRL messages are still online?
« on: Monday 30 May 22 17:40 BST (UK)  »
When Yahoo ended its lists, Y-IRL, hosted by Jane Lyons, seems to have disappeared.  There was a lot of great info on that board but I can't seem to find it.  Does anyone know anything about this?  Is it archived online anywhere?  Jane's website doesn't seem to be available anymore either. Thanks.

Hello everyone,
Attached is a photo of my great-grandparents and their first four children. I took the photo from a tintype.  I would be very grateful for any help in restoring this to as clear an image as possible, leaving my great-grandmother's fly-away hair and my great-grandfather's crooked eye.

I have exact birth dates for the parents and children. The infant was born in November 1894 and my great-grandmother is wearing a straw boater--and no one is wearing a coat--so I assume this was late spring/early summer of 1895.  My grandmother is the toddler held by her father. You can imagine that this is a very special family photo.

Thank you as always for your help.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Photo dating--red hair issue
« on: Friday 28 August 20 22:58 BST (UK)  »
On 17 May, I submitted a tintype of my family--Graham Family-New York-1880s.  I thought one of the women was my great-great grandmother but some, including me, were concerned that she looked too young.  I did mention the red hair in the family and someone wrote that red hair often does not go gray. That was news to me.

I just came across a photo from the 1970s which shows my great-aunt and her red hair.  She was born in 1897 so would have been in her 70s in this photo, maybe near 80.  She was a nun and I had never seen her hair til their habits/veils changed at this time. The man is her brother.

I had never heard this about red hair often not going gray til it was posted here and thought I'd share it here for those dating photos.  The most important thing is that I got absolutely wonderful restorations of my old family tintype and remain very grateful indeed!

This is a tintype of my great-great grandmother, Catherine Graham, and three of her grown children.  It's the only photo we have of her and two of her children.  The younger man is my great-grandfather.

I would be very grateful for restoration efforts by the experts here. I am especially hoping that the faces can be made as clear as possible.

I hope everyone here is well and getting through these difficult times as well as possible.  Thank you for your help.

London and Middlesex / No GRO birth record-1856-Is that possible?
« on: Friday 24 January 20 21:15 GMT (UK)  »
I have been seeking the 1856 GRO birth record for Mary Ann Powell without success for several years.  I have found and purchased the parents' marriage and the birth records for her five siblings without any problem from the GRO.  Do you know if some births or marriages were never recorded with the GRO? Has anyone run into this situation?

I have found her baptism on FindMyPast. That gives her birth date as 26 October 1856 and the baptism as 17 November 1856.  This was at St Mary's RC Church in Chelsea.  She had to be born in 1856 as the children came quickly and there was no other time span she could fit into.

I have bought several possible records from the GRO but they were not the right Mary Ann.  The parents were James Powell, a shoemaker, and Catherine Howard.  I have tried every way I can think of to find this record--wild cards, reversing the parents' names etc.

So is it possible the record is just not there?  Thanks for your thoughts.

Hello all, This is a photo of my grandfather (standing) and his brother when they were boys in New York.  If anyone can help restore this photo, I would be very grateful. It's the only photo we have of them as children. Thank you very much.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / When did Hampstead become part of London?
« on: Thursday 16 January 20 17:33 GMT (UK)  »
I'm sorry for such a basic question but I can't find a good answer on Google.  When did Hampstead become part of London?  Is it part of London now?

My great-great grandmother and children were in the Hampstead workhouse in the 1861 census.  I am seeking records beyond the census and am not sure if they are in London records or Middlesex or some other place name. This would be the late 1850s til about 1866.  Thank you.

This is a 1885 photo of my great-grandfather, Phillip Lapham, in New York.  He was about 21 in the photo. It is the only photo we have of him as he died young.  I would really appreciate the photo being restored.

There is a scratch on the left and damage on the right shoulder and down the sleeve.  There are also some spots on his forehead. And there is a stray mark on the upper left empty space. Well, you have better eyes than I do.

Many thanks for your help and your skills.
