Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Bradenham Manor High Wycombe,
« on: Tuesday 09 February 21 10:47 GMT (UK)  »
According to Wickepedia Bradenham Manor became a school for young gentlemen in the late victorian age .Can anyone advise whether this was in situ at the time of the 1871 census or whether there is an extant records of the staff inc domestic. My problem is that my Grandmother Mary Ann Powney born 1842 Waltham St Lawrence with her uncle Stephen Sharp 1851 married  Thomas Hatch from Littlewick Bray.I Mary Ann Hatch and her son Thomas James cannot be found on the 1871 Census. Mary Ann Hatch on 1881 was a domestic at Bramham College in Yorks and I have a death cert for I believe her 15Nov1883 Thornton Yorks. Her marriage I suspect was an unhappy one as he was a lot younger than her husband. Her son enlisted into the Northants Regt in 1878 stating he was born at Birdenham nr High Wycombe and lied abt age [b 12May 1862]
Any assistance in locating mother and son on  1871 Census would be greatly appreciated

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Birdenham??? Mary Ann Hatch and Son Thomas James
« on: Wednesday 20 January 21 13:19 GMT (UK)  »
Dear Members
My grandfather lying about his age [he was 16] and his birthplace Birdenham 12Dec 1878 signed on into the Northants Regt.I can find no such place and I wonder if the recorder wrote the place down as it sounded  e.g. Trottiscliffe is pronounced Trossly. There was 17 years age difference between his parents and I suspect the marriage was not a happy one.My grandfather became a groom in the army and I wonder whether he and his mother were working for one of the great houses in the area perhaps the Disraelis. Her name was Mary Ann Hatch born Waltham St Lawrence 29 May 1842 and he was Thomas James Hatch born Littlewick Bray 12 May 1862 an only child
Grateful if you can locate them in 1871 and any theories on Birdenham.

Devon Lookup Requests / John Sampson buried South Tawton 6OCT 1814 aged 32 years old
« on: Thursday 19 November 20 15:19 GMT (UK)  »
The a/m info was supplied by a fellow member.Subsequently discovered Allinsdown Farm [various spellings] Land Tax records show it was the residence of Robert Sampson and his wife Mary "Polly ' nee Curson Sampson..This leaves me with a conundrum. If John Sampson's age was correct at burial record then he could not be the son of at least Robert.Despite the indisputable Land Tax record why was Mahala widow of John recorded as the leaseholder occupant of Allinsdown when the lease was up for sale in 1814..
Can some kind person double check the recorded age for John at burial. have no reason to doubt it as it is contemporaneous with that of his spouse,Additionally can anyone remove the relationship of Robert, Mary all Polly and John and why despite the Land Tax evidence why John was farming and leasing Allinsdown.
'every little 'elps
Gratefully

Devon Lookup Requests / Robert,Mary, John and Mahala Sampson SOUTH TAWTON
« on: Friday 11 September 20 10:31 BST (UK)  »
Any help re this my post to the ST History Forum would be appreciatedGood Morning
Grateful for info and views on the following .The Land Tax records for Allisdon show the occupier in the early 1800's was Robert Sampson and by 1813 was Mary Sampson she was still the occupant in 1817.Yet as advised previously Mahala Stanbury Sampson widow of John Sampson was the occupant when farm was auctioned Seven Stars 24OCT1815.Mary was still occupier in 1817 ,Mahala remarried a William Battishill 30Oct 1816.This would tend to negate the view that Mahala was known as Mary.

Surrey Lookup Requests / James Gunner
« on: Wednesday 02 December 15 12:01 GMT (UK)  »
Had such a wonderful response to my previous enquiry thought I should try with another brick wall.My direct ancestor  James Gunner married Ann Belcher at St Marks Kennington 22NOV1830 both made their mark in the presence of the brides parents John Belcher and Anna Woodward Belcher. The family in the census consistently lived in the Tooting/Mitcham area.James consistently gave his age from 1841 [aged 50] 1851 60 1861 1871 80 [1871 he gave birthplace as Mitcham.] 1891 he is widowed in Croydon ex gardener aged 90 born Tooting estimated birth year 1781.
Grateful for any ideas as to his parents.A possible clue is that a William Gunner married Ann Elizabeth May at St Marks 8NOV1833 a possible sibling?
Grateful for any ideas
