Cork / Ellen Power was a publican in Ballinspittle in the 1920s/30s - but which pub?
« on: Friday 19 January 18 23:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi - help needed in finding a pub!

The back of a photograph from an album from the Irish side of my family says ‘Mrs. Power, The Pub, Ballinspittle, Co. Cork’.  The photograph is from the 1920s or early 1930s.

The 1911 census has an Ellen Power as a publican in Ballinspittle. Trade directories for the next couple of decades or so list Ellen Power as ‘grocer, vintner and car owner’.  At least a couple of the directories list Mrs E Power under the ‘Hotels’ heading. I’m assuming it is the same Ellen Powell in all the entries.

Just to satisfy my curiosity about Ellen Power (who is not an ancestor of mine), I would love to know the name and address of the pub/hotel. The first column in the 1911 census ‘House and Building Return’
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001948318/   and   http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001948319/

has the heading ‘No. of House or Building’. Ellen Power’s pub is 17.

I am at an early stage of my research of Irish records and would like to know if ‘17’ is the actual building number or simply the 17th building that the enumerator listed. If it actually was no. 17, where was that? I looked around Ballinspittle on Google Street View, but could not spot any house numbers!

Using
http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V2,558735,546176,12,9

alongside Google maps
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.6667834,-8.5954541,214m/data=!3m1!1e3?dcr=0

I tried to generally match the buildings with those on enumerator’s return using the post office and the court house as ‘markers’, but that didn’t produce anything conclusive.

So … can anybody help on this?

Many thanks

Laois (Queens) / Looking for Glen Ban School and Heath House, Abbeyleix
« on: Wednesday 27 December 17 20:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, everyone.

I’ve spent a lot of frustrating time on the internet, unsuccessfully trying to find out more about two places in Abbeyleix which have an ancestry connection for my family.

Could anyone help with the following?

Glen Ban School in Abbeyleix.

I have a postcard of the school - image attached.
1.   Does anyone know exactly where it was located?
2.   Does the building still exist?
3.   Does anyone know if there is any kind of written history of the school?

Heath House in Abbeyleix.

I've a photograph of Heath House - attached.
I can locate a Heath House, Abbeyleix on Google maps, but the satellite view is poor and it is not possible to see the building from the main road on street view. Here is the link, courtesy of the shrink link tool on rootschat: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01l7a/

4.   Does anyone know if my photograph of Heath House is the same place as on Google maps?

Thanks for any help.

The Lighter Side / Time of birth on Victorian birth certificates
« on: Sunday 16 July 17 18:12 BST (UK)  »
For the first time ever, I have an ancestor's birth certificate, from Victorian times, which also has the time of birth stated: Fourteenth May 1872 8.a.m.

How usual/unusual is that kind of information? Certainly rare in my experience!

The Common Room / Hearing test results?
« on: Monday 01 May 17 00:48 BST (UK)  »
One of my ancestors was discharged from the army in 1917 on medical grounds with one of the reasons given being 'deafness'.

Elsewhere on his medical report, there is a set of figures (see attached) - does anyone know if these are hearing test results, and, if so, what do they mean?

If they are not hearing test results does anyone know what they could refer to?

Thanks.

The Lighter Side / Were your grandparents born in Victorian times?
« on: Tuesday 18 April 17 14:53 BST (UK)  »
Having read a few posts in the WW1 forum about grandparents who fought in WW1 (who, leaving aside underage recruits, would have been born in Victorian Times) I wondered how far back into the Victorian era any of us could go with the birth of a grandparent.

To start the ball rolling (hopefully, a big ball), one of my grandparents was born in 1869.

World War One / Anyone help with abbreviations, please?
« on: Wednesday 02 November 16 20:37 GMT (UK)  »
I bet someone will know this straight away. I've had a look at a lot of military abbreviation lists, including 'good' lists, such as from the Long, Long Trail, but can't track down what A.D.T., D.A.D.T  and D.D.T. mean.

ASC 3rd Water Tank Company War Diaries

The contexts are, eg
Serqueux
July 25th 1918 D.A.D.T visited from Rouen.
July 27th 1918 A.D.T required information as to when Company would be ready to leave
July 28th 1918 Completion of sections in place. Reported to D.D.T. (Southern).

Many thanks

The Common Room / Ordnance Survey maps
« on: Saturday 09 July 16 20:46 BST (UK)  »
Hello All

Something I've being meaning to ask for ages:

If I take an OS map, e.g Dukinfield 1898 second edition  - the information on the map says surveyed in 1891-2 and revised in 1896. What exactly does 'revised' mean? What would have been revised?

How different is a revision from a re-survey? E.g Ashton map of 1907 was surveyed in 1849, re-surveyed in 1892 and revised in 1907.

Thanks!

World War One / Army Service Corps Mechanical Transport Depots 1914-1918
« on: Saturday 01 February 14 18:15 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help with this ...

A list of ASC MT Depots on the “Long, Long Trail”

http://www.1914-1918.net/ASC_MT_depots_UK.html

mentions Osterley Park and Sydenham, amongst others. The army records of one of my ancestors states he was based at Isleworth. Would this be the same location as Osterley Park?

Another non-army record states he was at Eltham sub-depot. Was this the same place as the Sydenham Depot?

Cheshire / Searching for a good copy of R Thornton’s 1824 map of Stockport
« on: Thursday 30 May 13 13:35 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a high resolution copy of R Thornton’s 1824 map of Stockport.  I’ve searched online without any luck. The nearest I’ve got to what I want is scanning a copy of the map from the inside front cover of Morris Garratt’s “Stockport, A History”, but I have a line down the middle of the scan where the pages meet and the overall quality isn’t quite as good as I would like.

Anyone got any ideas about where I could find the map?

Regards to all.
