England / the ship st. george
« on: Wednesday 17 August 16 11:55 BST (UK)  »
Can anybody help me locate some history on the ship St.George which was built in 1836 in New Brunswick Canada by Robert Ellis. This ship was used as an immigrant ship in 1838 from Scotland to Australia. Llyods register has it registered till 1844. i am trying to find what happened to it, did it sink, change names or continued in service. There is a ship of the same name on the immigrant run to America 1846-1849 but no detail of the ship I can see at this moment.

Armed Forces / army families birth overseas
« on: Friday 13 November 15 11:17 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for a birth record for a William Caldwell c1859 Armagh Ireland. His father John Caldwell was attached to the 26th Regiment of Foot as a sergent in Ireland around this time. The 1861 England census list William as 2 years of age born Armagh Ireland.
Also looking for information on the Cwmbran Coy. 2nd Monmouth Rifle Corps as this company have erected a headstone for the above sergent. John Caldwell left the 26th Regiment in 1860 and moved to Pontypool Wales and died there in 1871, so he must have had some connection to the Welsh regiment, maybe as a reserve or volunteer.

Looking for final resting place of Mary Ann McDonald (nee Frazer) born 12/9/1847 Binda NSW.Married John Robert McDonald 1/8/1866 Binda. NSW.
Mary conceived 16 children of which 5 did not survive childhood. Sometime after the birth of her last set of twins in 1887 she left the family and no record can be found of her.
Folklore says she moved in with either a Bray or another McDonald.
It is reported she died sometime between 1903-1920 but no record can be found at NSW bdm up till 1940 as well no record in Qld bdm. There are a few on anc giving her death date, but when checked out, all fall over.
There is a Mary Ann McDonald recorded in 1903 living in Binda, but this is her daughter in law.
Can any body help locate her.

Armed Forces / service record for richard embrey
« on: Tuesday 09 September 14 11:24 BST (UK)  »
Can anybody suggest how I can locate a possible army service record for Richard Embrey who is reported to have served in the 1st India Sikh War. Richard was born 1823 in Monmouth and emigrated to Australia in 1848. It was my understanding in those days you signed up for 21 years service and could only get out if wounded or you paid your way out. Richard is reported to have served under a General Whish and a Captain Hervey Mercer in India for 2 years. Richard died in Australia 1896.
