Family History Beginners Board / Scotsman moving to Ireland in 1800s
« on: Tuesday 17 July 18 00:19 BST (UK)  »
I have found a relative who supposedly was born in  City of Edinburgh on May 4, 1798.  How accurate can this information be ?  Are there records for that time period  ?

This person appears on the 1850 census for Saratoga Co NY, but states that he and his family were all born in Ireland.  Is it possible that he came to Ireland to board a ship to the US, from Newry, perhaps ??  There's a George listed as arriving on a ship called "Brothers", occupation is listed as Smith (Blacksmith ) ?  Arrived in NY May 31 1849.

Its also possible that he bought land in Ireland and left from there, on a ship called Brothers?

Any information regarding Scottish or Irish census for 1800s would be greatly appreciated.

Mayo / Heaney misspelled as Henne in church records?
« on: Monday 14 March 16 17:04 GMT (UK)  »
Is it possible that the surname Heaney was misspelled as Henne in church records. Perhaps the registrar spelled it phonetically.  (i remember my folks using this Pronunciation. but I always assumed they meant Heaney)
I  don't associate the name Henne with Ireland at all. I'd appreciate any insight. Thanks.

Galway / why no info on Cregmore/Carnmore/Lackagh ?
« on: Monday 14 March 16 16:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
The list of towns under Co Galway, seems to exclude the Cregmore/Carnmore /Lackagh area.  Are they combined under one of the other towns that are listed ?

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Look up requested for KEARNS in Manchester c 1885
« on: Monday 19 August 13 18:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I would appreciate any assistance locating a relative named Kearns ( possibly James),who may have owned /leased a store in Manchester between 1878 and 1885 roughly !
His wife's name may have been Marion Morrison(or Morrissey) and they had 2 children, Mary born in 1878 and Willie in 1883.
They would most likely be Catholic and both died (during some epidemic) around 1885.  My greatgrandfather (Thomas Murphy, or my grandfather Matthew Murphy) took both children to Ireland and raised them, as I believe they were Thomas'  niece and  nephew.

Would there be records of adoption ?(not sure if there was a formal adoption).

I was able to find both "children" in Ireland in the 1901 census, but not sure what year they arrived.

Any information re the parents would be very much appreciated.

( This request was originally opened in a different Forum, but I'm not sure how to link to it).  I'm a bit technologically challenged at my age.   :-[

Thank you,
Sarah

Galway / Miss Summerly or Summerville from Galway
« on: Monday 19 August 13 03:37 BST (UK)  »

I am trying to locate a Miss Summerly or Summerville  who married my great great grandfather(Edward Commins), somewhere in the Galway (maybe Cregmore) area around 1840.
Their son Michael married my great grandmother Bridget Hosty and they had 10 children.....Ned, James(my grandfather), and Pat, John, Micheal, Sabina,Bridget, Julia and Mary.....all of whom   emigrated to USA.
Any information on Summerly (or Summerville) would be appreciated.  For some reason, I think she might have come from the Bohermore area, but that may not be correct.
Thanks
Sarah  :)

Hi
When I hit post, after typing my message (or after sending a PM) it doesn't appear that anything has been posted or sent. I'm not sure it has been sent or posted...............What am I doing wrong ?
It eventually seems to work, but is there a time delay ?  I don't want to post multiple times.
Thanks
