« on: Tuesday 29 June 21 07:11 BST (UK)  »
I am researching my Chalmers family beginning , I believe, in Girvan in Ayrshire, Scotland. David Chalmers b 1704 married Sara Broun b. 1700 in abt 1720. One child, my ancestor was Ronald Chalmers b 1726 and d 1790. He married Margaret McClymont, their child was John who married Agnes Guthrie. I understand the family originated in Girvan however  I dont have an address. the children of John and Agnes were all born in/registered Girvan. I would love to find out what they did and where they lived

Derbyshire / Mr John Murphy Marblemason of Derbyshire
« on: Monday 14 June 21 03:25 BST (UK)  »
Looking for any information on my 2 x g grandfather from Ireland who moved to Derbyshire .John Murphy b 24 May 1819 in Dublin, Ireland, was apprenticed to Mr John Vallance of Derbyshire, at the suggestion of Dowager Marchioness of Ormonde, a family friend and a woman whose patronage caused John to move to England to learn his trade. I have found Johns' obituary listing his father as a soldier and detailing young Johns' apprenticeship to the trade, where he became a marble mason with his own business in Madron / Penzance, Cornwall, after being the foreman of the Penzance Serpentine Co. in 1850s. He then had his own business and lived in Market Jew St, Penzance. I am interested in his life in Cornwall, he married Elizabeth Bryan, daughter of Benjamin Bryan and Mary Bown, (the family had some of the  show caverns, Coalpit Rake/Devonshire Cavern,)  in Matlock Bath in 1841 in Matlock Bath and had 11 children. They moved to Penzance in 1850,  I am also keen to know more about his family, he had 7 brothers and one sister who eventually came to England also, from Ireland. John was also an inventor who mastered a method to arrest the decay of stone, he and one other rival were selected eventually to conduct further trials about this process, but John died before he found out the results of his discovery. Any information on this family would be most appreciated.

Australia / James Andrew b1902 Glasgow d 1976 Waverley NSW
« on: Sunday 14 June 15 04:25 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for information about James Andrew, he married my Grandmother Sarah McIntosh on 31 October 1936 at 5 Scott St, Waverley NSW. They both came from Glasgow originally. I know nothing of this side of the family as he married my Grandmother after she had my mother in 1921 . I believe they may have known each other in Scotland as they apparently lived only a few streets apart in Glasgow as children. Any information or contacts would be most appreciated, I am hoping to find a photo of Sarah McIntosh and of James as well. James was buried in the Waverley, NSW  cemetary. He was a green grocer, and later a hospital attendant .

Derbyshire / Petrifactioner John Murphy 1800s
« on: Thursday 09 May 13 03:42 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out more about my g great grandfather John Murphy b abt 1819 Dublin Ireland and came to Matlock Bath when 22yrs and married Elizabeth Bryan who was the  daughter of the "Cavern" Bryans, (Devonshire Cavern) Benjamin(1799-1860), also a journalist and writer,  and his wife Mary Bown1793-1838. It appears John Murphy  was a marble mason and later went to work with Serpentine at Penzance , eventually having his own shop and employees there. But we have found out that his father , also John Murphy,b abt. 1800 in Ireland, may have come to Matlock area from Ireland as well, as he is listed as a Petrifactioner, which seems to be peculiar to the area. Does anyone know about him or his family? Great to get any leads on this.

Dublin / John Murphy possible Marblemason Dublin abt 1800
« on: Tuesday 26 February 13 06:36 GMT (UK)  »
John Murphy of Dublin b. abt. 1800. John had a son John Murphy b 1821 Dublin, who ended up in Penzance in Cornwall where he married and had a family of his own. John Murphy, the son, was a Marblemason employing 5 people, his wife worked with serpentine, so possibly the family in Ireland were also Marblemasons? We thought to follow the lead of Marblemason in Dublin. Any help appreciated, I realise how many John Murphy's must have lived in Dublin! Help! (Thanks for previous help, wild goose chase on Ann Hore, whom we thought had married John)

United States of America / Charles Morrissey from Co Clare to the Civil War
« on: Monday 22 October 12 06:19 BST (UK)  »
Our Ancestor Charles Morrissey, b abt 1830 Ballymakea, Co Clare in Ireland , emigrated to America but sadly died in the Civil War while fighting for the Union. His family of 2 brothers and their children came instead to Australia and heard eventually that he had been killed , apparently at Gettysburg. He is said to have left a wife and children in Baltimore, whether he married in Ireland and took them with him or married in Baltimore we don't know.
His parents are Timothy Morrissey b.1793  d. 1868 and mother Catherine Killeen b 1792 and d. 1871, They were also natives of Co Clare and farmed there. Charles had two brothers that we know of , Thomas b 1828 d. 1916 and Patrick b 1834 d. 1905 in Grafton district, New South Wales,Australia.
We would love to hear from anyone researching this family, we particularly want to track down Charles' wife and children, we don't know what became of them. We know only that they lived in Baltimore. Any information appreciated, including service in the Civil War. Anne
