Somerset Lookup Requests / Elizabeth EXON times two!
« on: Saturday 13 March 21 03:54 GMT (UK)  »
I have a mystery which has had me stumped for a good 15 years.  There are two women born 22 years apart in Kilton, Somerset, both with the name Elizabeth EXON who "married" the same man named William MANN.

The first Elizabeth EXON was born in 1844 and married William MANN in Kensington, 15 April 1875.  They divorced in 1889 and another woman named Elizabeth EXON is named under the claim for adultery.  The "new" Elizabeth EXON and William MANN then have two children; Cecilia Exon MANN born in 1890 and William MANN born in 1891.  Both are described as the children of William and Elizabeth MANN of 101 Walmer Rd in their baptism records.

In the 1891 census they family are recorded under the surname MANN.  In the 1901 census, Elizabeth is living with her son William EXON and is recorded as the boarder of William MANN.  She is also using the surname EXON again.  Their daughter Cecilia has died of measles.

In the 1911 census, William, Elizabeth and their son are recorded with the surname EXON.  They are recorded as being married for 22 years which would have been 1889, the same year as the first wife Elizabeth EXON filed for divorce, but there isn't a marriage record.

William MANN senior died sometime between 1912 and 1918.  His son William MANN, is using the surname EXON when he married in 1918 and his death in 1936 is registered under the surname EXON.

The mystery is Elizabeth EXON as she doesn't exist prior to 1881 and disappears after 1911.  Co-incidentally, both Elizabeth EXONs worked for the same family with the surname WALTHAM who lived in Stanford Rivers, Essex.  Elizabeth (b. 1844) worked for the WALTHAM family in 1861 and Elizabeth (b.1866) worked for the same family in 1881.

Its a very complicated situation and if anyone can find details of the Elizabeth EXON (b. 1866) prior to 1881 or after 1911, I will be eternally grateful.

Thanks for reading my long winded post :)

London and Middlesex / Child Support and Jail
« on: Sunday 07 March 21 00:49 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find some way of locating information regarding non payment of child support and jail as a result.  My grandfather left his wife and children in 1934 and I have been told that he went to prison (or jail) for not supporting his family.

His wife was living in Hammersmith and he moved in as a lodger with a family in Hornsey.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how and where to find this information?  I live in NZ so don't have anyway of visiting any record offices in London.

Thanks in advance.

Armed Forces / Sergeant in the Grenadier Guards
« on: Saturday 25 July 20 23:12 BST (UK)  »
It it possible to reach the rank of sergeant within a period of two years?

I'm trying to locate a relative who is described as a Sergeant Grenadier Guard on an 1868 birth certificate for his child.  On his marriage record in 1866, he is described as a Labourer.

His wife is a widow by 1878 when she remarries.  His name is George BROWN and I haven't been able to find any record for him in terms of birth, death or military involvement.  The only other suggestion that he was a member or the Grenadier Guards is that his daughter was enrolled in the Guards Industrial School plus the marriage records for his three children describe him as a deceased soldier.  It is the short duration of two years from enlistment to sergeant that has me a little concerned that marriage records may not be correct.

Thanks for any help that may clarify this.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / 1891 Census Lookup
« on: Monday 01 July 19 04:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Can someone please help me find a relative who was living in Kensington in 1891?  I have their address as 101 Walmer Road in a record for 1890 and another record in 1896 shows them as living at 101 Walmer Road.  However, I cannot find him in the 1891 census and I assume that he is probably living at 101 Walmer Road.

His name is William MANN born in 1848 - North Creake, Norfolk and his occupation was a laundry man.  He should be living with is "wife" Elizabeth born in 1866 - Kilton, Somerset.  They could also be using the surname EXON as he was divorced in 1889 and was claimed to be having an affair with Elizabeth EXON (which also happened to be his wife's name)  I have found them in later records using both EXON and MANN as a surname.

Thanks.

Inverness / Archibald McLEOD born 1838 - 1842 in Bracadale
« on: Saturday 10 August 13 23:26 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find any records in Bracadale, Isle of Skye for my gg grandfather.  So far, I have him on a ship, David G. Fleming leaving Scotland for NZ in 1864.  His occupation is given as farm labourer from Inverness and his age is 21.

He moved to NZ as an assisted emigrant and eventually settled in Otago during the peak of the gold rush, working as a shepherd and farmer.

His cemetery details give his birthplace as Bracadale, Isle of Skye.

Any information would be very welcome.
