South Africa / Clack at Komga, Eastern Cape
« on: Sunday 19 February 23 03:39 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for a c. record...I saw it in the days of IGI batch numbers, but now cannot find it!

My grandmother, Amy Maud Maria CLACK was born at Komga, Eastern Cape in abt 1879.
I didn't think to search for any other family records at the time, not realizing their neighbours from Berkshire also went to South Africa!
Many years later, I now learn that another family, surname King, also sailed for South Africa about the same time. This was the surname of the family living on a neighbouring farm in Komga! :o
I would dearly love to learn if there are anymore Clack, King or Whitehorn recoords at Komga?

Living in hope...
Patricia.

Devon Lookup Requests / Devon Apprenticeship papers for Thomas Kingwell?
« on: Tuesday 06 April 21 09:07 BST (UK)  »
Earnestly seeking Thomas Kingwell.... 1784-1848  ::)

We first meet Thomas at his wedding in Helston in 1811, then again in 1841 census there.
Sadly we find a death certificate before 1851, so no mention of where he was from, or who his parents were.  :'(
I thought it was time to see if more documents have become available, since I last tried to find this important person....

Thomas was a tailor, so as most trails lead me to Devon, I wondered  where he did his apprenticeship? Are there online records available for these?

Last year I had my Ancestry DNA test done and have found a 3-4th cousin who also has not found where our Thomas came from.
My feeling is that they may have been Non-Conformists, as 2nd names like Eve and Abraham are listed?

Any assistance would be very welcome, as I have been searching for him for abt 20 years, when we spent hours at Family Record Centres spinning through films and microfiche records!
 :-* ;D ???

Other Countries / Sweeting parish records from Pusilawa, Ceylon?
« on: Tuesday 10 November 20 10:20 GMT (UK)  »
Eugene Charles Hankey Sweeting died 28 May 1882 at Rothschild Coffee Plantation, Pusilawa, Ceylon.
A number of his children were listed in the UK censuses as being born in Ceylon.
They remained in England for their education and I have tracked down 6 offspring, living with relatives, at boarding schools etc.
Of course they were not known by their baptismal names, so took some detective work to find them!!  ::)

Could some kind soul with access to Ceylon records, for British residents look from 1870-1883?
Mr Sweeting married Jane Hammond in 1869 at Pembroke, Wales and they spent time with family at Guernsey between trips to Ceylon.

Ever hopeful Patricia. ???

The Common Room / Sponsors or godparents listed on baptismal records?
« on: Saturday 26 September 20 06:59 BST (UK)  »
I recently found that the sponsors of the child were listed at a Catholic baptism in 1815 at Liverpool.
Is this also common in older records of Church of England with godparents at christenings?
What was a surprised to me, was that the child took the sponsors surname as his 2nd name?
I thought people were being posh when they did this, like double barreled names?
 ;D

Cornwall / Helston parish also list mother's surname in c. records?
« on: Wednesday 15 April 20 08:01 BST (UK)  »
Is it common practice in Cornwall, to list the mother's surname as part of a christening record?
I first thought it might be a way a distinguishing between two families with the same surname, but some of my Kingwell ancestors christened at Helston in the 1800s have 3 surnames listed?!

We have James Williams Kingwell c. 1821, then in 1826 we have Jas. Dunstone Williams Kingwell.
It seems the Jas. should have been Jos? as he remains Joseph all through other records.
Williams is the mothers maiden name, but where does the Dunstone part come from?
Two of Joseph's own children get the Dunstone name in the next generation.

I only saw one Dunstone child c. at Helston during the same period I was searching?
I have no idea what Thomas (b. abt 1784) Kingwell's mother's maiden name was...

Any clarification would be most welcome!  ;D

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Thomas Rockall b. abt 1721 in Hambleden area?
« on: Sunday 09 October 16 11:38 BST (UK)  »
Samuel Rockall was c. 24 Feb 1744 at Watlington. His parents are listed as Thomas & Elizabeth.
Samuel m. Anne West on 9 Apr 1776 at Turville, but where was his father, Thomas born????

I have looked at parish records online and see that the Rockalls (with MANY spelling variations) were christening children from Stokenchurch in the north, to Harpsden in the south from 1700-1725.
I have OFHS CDs with many villages covered, but has anyone seen my Thomas in the Buckinghamshire villages down around Hambleden?
Maybe there is a marriage about 20years later, between Thomas & Elizabeth.... ;D

Any help would be gratefully received... :-*

Cornwall Lookup Requests / Was Thomas Kingwell, buried in 1782 a child?
« on: Monday 31 August 15 20:15 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for my great grandfather's parents and feel he could be part of a family with links to St Ewe, St Clement and St Michael Caerhays.
The only fly in the ointment, with this theory, is that a Thomas Kingwell is buried on 25th Jan 1782 at St Ewe and I fear he is the man I hoped would father my relative in abt 1784...you see my problem?
 ::) ::)
So I would really like to know if the death in 1782 was a child or an adult?
Would the age be given on records, by then?

Ever hopeful relative  :-* :-*

Devon Lookup Requests / Was Thomas Kingwell (1784) born in Plymouth?
« on: Monday 31 August 15 19:58 BST (UK)  »
Were parish records from St Andrews and Charles church destroyed in the Blitz bombing?
For years I have been trying to find out where my great grandfather was born, with no success.
Although he married and raised his family at Helston, Cornwall, there are family links to the Plymouth area.
It puzzles me that I can't find him, as Devon and Cornwall have excellent online parish records.

Has anyone seen my Thomas and his parents somewhere in the Plymouth/Devonport area?
 ??? ???
Ever hopeful relative...  :-*

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Felix Strange born 1842 Wycombe District?
« on: Saturday 08 November 14 08:02 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching another older Felix Strange, but I noticed that a Felix Strange was born Jan-Mar 1842 (Wycombe District) and one died in 1843 at Wallingford, Berkshire.

My Felix Strange was b. abt 1789 (I have found no c. rec for him) but he lived and died at Stokenchurch.
Was this younger Felix a grandson or some other relative?

Is there perhaps a parish record somewhere in the Wycombe District for young Felix?  ???
But who died at Wallingford.....another Felix or the same one? ::)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!  :-*
