Scotland / Stepdad as an Uncle
« on: Friday 14 May 21 17:13 BST (UK)  »
My Grandmother from Selkirk married a second time a gentleman from Galashiels in 1933 in Canada.  In 1947 my mother took a ship to Scotland to visit her relatives on her way home she landed in New York City.  On the customs form it stated: Residence Location: Canada; Residence Description: Marital Status: Single; Relative Relation to Head: Uncle.

Actually the head of the household in Canada was her step dad.  Both my mum and her sister refused to be adopted.  So (finally) my question is it common in Scotland to call one's step dad "uncle".

Thanks

Europe / Birth Records in Corfu
« on: Wednesday 20 June 18 01:47 BST (UK)  »
John Cowley was born in Corfu in 1823 while the British were administrating it after some war.  He is listed as a British Subject in English census' so his father would have been a British Subject.  Anybody know how research his birth or get info on his parents.  John ended up as a servant for some Lord near Knutsford near Manchester so I'm thinking his father had a similar profession and was not in the military. Thanks.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Looking for John Cowley
« on: Friday 22 May 15 02:27 BST (UK)  »
My John Cowley was born in Knutsford (near Manchester) on 15Nov1846. Sometime between 1851 and 1861 he moved to Liverpool.  In the 1891 census he was living at 6 Arnot Street in Liverpool by 1901 his wife Mary Jane Cowley (nee Brown) is listed as a widow.  When his son (John) joined the army to fight in the Boer War he is not listed as next of kin so I'm thinking he died around 1892-1895.  I have asked for info before but without success.  I've reached a deadend :-(.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Midlothian / Balerno and Malleny Mills
« on: Monday 20 April 15 18:39 BST (UK)  »
My mom and my aunt were born in Malleny Mills, Balerno per their birth cert.  Last year while in Balerno I enquired about Malleny Mills and at first the person didn't know what I was talking about but then said "The mills??  They were torn down years ago."   Then last night playing on my tablet while watching TV I came across this.

My question (possibly from someone who knows Balerno) is this address in fact the Malleny Mills on my mom's birth cert (circa 1922).  Are the Mills in fact gone?  I'm planning a trip next month so I'd really like to know the answer.  Thanks so much from Canada  :)

My Grandmother grew on Marlborough St. in Seaham Harbour.  Anybody know the approx. age of the townhomes there?  From Google maps there look rather new compared to the time my Grandmother was there (circa 1900).  Thanks for any info.

The Lighter Side / Graveyard Tips
« on: Friday 03 April 15 21:31 BST (UK)  »
If a cemetery chargehand were to show me where my relatives are buried should I be tipping him/her and if so how much?  Also if someone were to give us a tour of a large cemetery for a couple of hours at no charge what would be an appropriate tip , if any.

I'm in visiting Seaham in May and plan to try to find my Great Grandfather who is buried in grave # 73 consecrated on Ward 1.  There is no headstone on the plot.  My question is whether there will be any marker for grave #73

My GGrandmother is buried in Southern Cemetery.  The grave number FConsecrated 918.  Does this mean she buried is Section F.  The map from the Cemetary says Section F is multi faith while another map indicates Section F is N/C .  There also apperars two section F's.  Also is it difficult to find the graves?  Are the numberes and sections labeled?  Thanks for any help

Lancashire / Is a death need to be registered?
« on: Saturday 28 February 15 16:36 GMT (UK)  »
I am having difficulty finding my great grandfather and I was wondering whether the family is required to report the death?  I vaguely remember by dad saying one of his relatives died while fishing in the Irish Sea.  I have asked for two death certs but both proved to be the wrong John Cowley.  Here's what i know about him.  Christened 11Nov1846 St John the Baptist, Knutsford, Cheshire.  Father: John Cowley, Mother: Mary Graham.  In 1891 census was listed as John Cowey and living @ 6 Arnot Street Walton on the Hill, Liverpool.  His spouse was Mary Jane Brown.  In 1901 census Mary Jane was listed as a widow.  When his son John enlisted for the Boer War his father was not listed as next of kin.  So he must have died between 1891-1895.  He is listed as Lithograph Printer in 1891.  Any thoughts is much appreciated.   P.S.  A number of my 2nd cousins on Ancestry  (whom I don't know) has listed him dying in 1893 but this John Cowley is NOT my John Cowley as I have the death cert and none of the particulars match mine.   :-X
