Travelling People / DRAPER's of Hertfordshire and beyond, musicians.
« on: Wednesday 27 March 19 15:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I am not a relative, but I have been trying to help a descendant of Leviathan Draper. Leviathan was the Leviathan that lived with Ambrose Thorpe as his wife.

If we have it right we have Joseph Draper as her father, another Joseph Draper, a musician, as her grandfather, and Samuel Draper as her great grandfather, but have a few questions relating to the last two generations.

From Familysearch Samuel Draper, with Margaret/Peggy, appears to have been the father of Favoridge 1788, Hannah 1795, Susanna 1795, Joseph 1798, Kaisa 1800, James 1806, and Ambrose 1808.

Both Joseph Draper, and also Hannah Draper, above, have turned up in some census returns, and some newspapers, but nothing has been found so far relating to any of their siblings. If anyone knows anything at all about those siblings we would be very interested.

In the 1861 Hertfordshire census is a younger Samuel Draper, also with a Margaret, plus three children. He turns up in the newspapers, too. This Samuel died in 1870 while camping on Bernard's Heath, St. Albans. A newspaper gave his age as 82, but when his death was registered it was put down to 80. Samuel was a fiddle player. Could he, by any chance, have been another son of the older Samuel?

In the 1851 census, on FamilySearch, unmarried Hannah Draper has a niece Kelly Draper, aged 4, and a nephew Elias Draper, aged 9, staying with her. Does anyone know who their parents were?

In the several census returns for Hitchin there was another Elias Draper. This one was born about 1812 or 13, and was a musician. He died in 1890, aged 78. Could he have been a relative of the older Samuel?

And one last question. Has anyone come across the baptism of the older Samuel Draper?

Lots of questions! Thank you for reading them. Hoping someone can help us out with some of them.

Norfolk / John DYE
« on: Sunday 03 February 19 21:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I have been researching John Dye who was baptised at Pentney in 1774, moved to Shingham, and later went back to Pentney. He is in the 1841 and 51 census for Pentney, and was buried there in 1852. His first wife was Amy, and his second wife was Ann, and he had 10 surviving children. Everything seemed straightforward until I started searching through the old newspapers, then things got rather interesting, perhaps not for John Dye though!

According to the Norwich Mercury he appeared at the Court Sessions in July 1834 charged with stealing a lamb, and was sentenced to transportation for life. John Dye gets a mention on the National Archives website as his wife Ann got up a petition, and due to that his sentence appears reduced from transportation for life to 14 years transportation in the November 1834. While all this was happening John Dye was being held on the York prison ship, in Portsmouth Harbour.

He didn't serve all the 14 years as he was back in Pentney before the 1841 census, but what I would very much like to find out, if possible please, is whether he was taken to Australia, and later managed to return, or was he set free, for some reason, from the prison ship?

Thank you for reading this.  :)

Norfolk / Help please with the GIBSON brothers of Flitcham.
« on: Thursday 26 April 18 14:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello

My great grandmother's two brothers were George Gibson and Frederick William Gibson. They were sons of Martin Gibson and Mahala (Ramm).

George Gibson was born at Flitcham in 1855.
1861 Flitcham census - aged 5, with parents.
1871 Roydon census - aged 15, ag. lab. with father and stepmother.
1881 Grimston census - aged 27, unmarried, labourer, lodging with George Bone and family.

Frederick William Gibson was born at Flitcham in 1860.
(Named William on all three census returns.)
1861 Flitcham census - aged 1, with parents.
1871 Roydon census - aged 10, scholar, with father and stepmother.
1881 Roydon census - aged 21, with father and a second stepmother.

I am trying to find them in later records, but have seen no mention so far.

Thank you for reading this.  :)

Norfolk / Looking for JOHN TWITE
« on: Wednesday 01 April 15 18:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I am looking for John Twite who was baptised in 1818 at Grimston a son of Anthony Twite and Elizabeth (late Cooper). There are other spellings of this family's surname.

John had either left home or perhaps died before the 1841 census was taken but nothing is turning up. I am hoping someone can see a record relating to him.

Can I just add so things don't get confusing John had a cousin John born in the adjoining parish of Roydon in 1819. He lived for a time at Grimston and also married there. I already have the census and other records for him.

Hoping someone can help with the Grimston born John. Thank you for reading this.  :)

Norfolk / Looking for SARAH TWITE
« on: Wednesday 01 April 15 18:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello

My 2 x great aunt Sarah Twite was baptised at Grimston in 1833. She was a daughter of Anthony Twite and Elizabeth (late Cooper).

I have Sarah in the 1841 and 1851 census. In 1851 she is working as a servant at the Black Horse public house at nearby Castle Rising under the surname of Twaite.

I have failed to find her in any later census. She may well have married or perhaps died before 1861 but nothing is turning up.

Thank you for reading this.  :)

Norfolk / Help please with Richard Eagle
« on: Wednesday 04 February 15 21:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

Richard Eagle was baptised in Hoe in 1804 and probably lived for a time in Sporle. He married in 1829 and with his wife moved to Holme Hale. Two children were baptised while they were in Holme Hale but died as infants. Then in December 1841, still in Holme Hale, Elizabeth Eagle, Richard's wife was buried. In 1833 Richard Eagle's occupation was given as farm bailiff.

He seems not to be documented again after the death of his wife as far as I can see. I am hoping someone with fresh eyes can find the elusive Mr. Eagle.

Thank you for reading this.

Suffolk Lookup Requests / William Eagle and Sarah Grass
« on: Sunday 01 February 15 17:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I am hoping someone can help. I know very little of Suffolk records and I am hoping the following is not too much of a challenge.

I have come across a marriage of a William Eagle to a Sarah Grass that took place in Brandon on the Norfolk and Suffolk border in 1760.

I have a feeling this couple moved to central Norfolk soon after their marriage and had several children including three with the not quite so common names of Matthew, Penelope and Richard from 1761 onwards. I am hoping these three may have been named after their grandparents or other family members.

From William Eagle's age at burial he would have been born around 1735. I have not found his wife Sarah's burial as yet.

As the baptisms for either William Eagle or Sarah Grass appear not to be turning up in Norfolk I am wondering if they were born in Brandon or perhaps further into Suffolk. It will be a great help to receive the names of the parents and siblings of this couple.

Thank you for reading this  :)

Norfolk Lookup Requests / James Wright & family 1841/1851
« on: Sunday 01 February 15 11:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I am hoping someone can do a look up for me please.

I am looking for James Wright, his wife and any children in the 1841 and 1851 census.

James Wright was baptiised in Necton (sometimes spelt Neighton) in December 1789, a son of Henry and Ann Wright.

In the 1861 census he was a widower living in Swaffham. Occupation; bricklayer.

It looks as if this James Wright was possibly buried in Swaffham in 1865. There was a Susannah Wright, wife of James, buried earlier in 1860, also in Swaffham. She may have been his wife. The Wright surname was quite common in the Swaffham area so I am hoping the census for 1841 and 1851 will confirm his family.

Thank you for reading this.  :)

Travelling People / Help please with EMILY and LAWRENCE GRAY
« on: Wednesday 09 July 14 21:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello Everyone

In late 1858 the miller of Sporle with Palgrave in Norfolk was taken to court for hare poaching by a local gamekeeper. The miller fearing he would be imprisoned made up a story for the court about the gamekeeper being very drunk and sleeping off the effects on the night the poaching crime had  taken place. The miller brought forward quite a few witnesses to this gamekeeper's drunken night.

One of these witnesses was Emily the wife of Lawrence Gray, gypsy, who were camping next to the Elephant and Castle beerhouse in Sporle where all the supposed drinking took place during the night in question.

From the court case: Emily Gray's birth year was c.1830 and she had a son "about five". Lawrence Gray bought some poles from a woodman while in Sporle before the family moved onto Wormegay for a few days and then to Necton (both places still in Norfolk). The couple owned a horse and lived in a tent.

I am attempting to find something about Emily and Lawrence Gray. There was a baptism at Norwich of a Thomas, son of Lawrence Gray, tinman, and Emily Pinfold both of Pockthorpe in September 1849. I have a feeling this may be the couple but that baptism is all I can find. Has anyone come across this couple in the records? Are they in any census before or after 1858? Who were their parents?

Thank you for reading this.  :)
