Tyrone / REA/WRAY CLOGHER TYRONE
« on: Friday 07 April 17 06:47 BST (UK)  »
Ive been hunting for ages for the parents of my 3x Great Grandfather Stewart Rea (often spelled WRAY)
He was born c1836 and married at Erugal Keerogue, Church of Ireland in 1877 to Margaret Wishart (spelled Wishard in the Civil Registration index.

The family immigrated to New Zealand with George Vessey Stewarts Party in 1875 and died in Katikati New Zealand in 1913. No records in New Zealand mention parents names.
Id appreciate any help anyone can offer.  Thanks

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Waltham St Lawrence - CROCKFORD
« on: Saturday 01 April 17 06:33 BST (UK)  »
Hello Im trying to find details on the Crockford Family of Waltham St Lawrence.
My husband has a DNA match to a descendant of Lydia CROCKFORD born c1792 and my husband descends from Philip CROCKFORD born c1790.
THe DNA match would suggest perhaps Lydia and Philip were brother and sister or 1st cousins at the most distant.
While I can find marriages for both, I can not find their births to prove their relationship.
I have been unable to find parish records online and live in New Zealand so visiting a records office is not possible so Id appreciate any info anyone has on this family
Thanks
Regards
Lauren

Staffordshire / Wilson Dunbrook, Longnor 1776-1861
« on: Monday 21 November 16 05:34 GMT (UK)  »
Ive spent a lot of hours researching this but Ive not come to a conclusion and Id love some help as to where I could get some confirmation.
My 6x G Grandfather David Wilson and his wife moved to Dunbrook before the birth of his second son in 1776. He lived there all his life and bought up his 9 (probably 10) children there until he died in 1795.
Skip forward to the 1841 census and living at Dunbrook is Simon Wilson. We havent confirmed he is Davids but Im pretty sure - not just for the fact that he is living there, but he names his children after David and Davids children.  By 1861 Davids son Isaac Wilson is living at Dunbrook. ( Simon and Isaac were both stone masons at various times in their lives.
Ive traced Dunbrook through all the censuses - there only appears one family living there until 1881 when there are 2 families - right up to the 1939 register - still 2 families.
Google maps mistakenly locates a place called Dunbrook cottage - instead of Daisy Knowl which is the next residence along - but beside that are Dunbrook house back from the road and Dunbrook Cottage in front. Both of these - according to various planning applications are 19th century buildings. - diagonally opposite Dunbrook Cottage is Poole Cottage - from the 1700s apparently. - This is the one we thought must be David Wilsons - but why 2 other properties - Im attaching various images and files - My query is - how can I confirm which house was Davids , Simons and Issacs

There are various planning applications for each place on the peak district planning website but none mention previous ownership -only that Dunbrook House is 19th Century - a real estate agent advert for poole cottage states it is from the 1700s

So any ideas how I can find out ??

Derbyshire / Thomas Etherington from Mugginton
« on: Sunday 30 October 16 18:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hello I wonder if anyone can help . I have a DNA match with a common surname and location but I've been unable to connect our trees as I'm stuck with my 5x G Grandfather Thomas Etherington from Mugginton. He married my 5xG Grandmother Mary Kirkland there in 1784 and had 4 children that I have found.. Hannah (1794), John (1797)Thomas (c1804)and George(1810) . I also found a record for a Thomas Etherington marrying a Hannah Kirkland in 1777 and wonder if it's the same man . I've not found a birth nor a death for Thomas or Mary which makes it hard to trace back further . Does any one have any clues where to look or does someone have access to Mugginton parish records who could look then up for me
Thanks in advance

Armed Forces / Battle of Trafalgar - Mark Secombe HMS Tonnant
« on: Sunday 02 October 16 21:33 BST (UK)  »
I have found through the British Archives site Discovery that my 4x G Grandfather Mark Secombe was a Landsman the HMS Tonnant during the Battle of Trafalgar. Is there anywhere I can find more information about him and his naval career?

I am trying to trace a connection between two families - specifically between my GG Grandmother Mary Ann Goodwin nee Gleeson, and the family of Albert Edward Reed in Canada.
He wrote a letter in 1948 to the Ministry of Defense in New Zealand looking for his 2nd cousin Lionel Goodwin ( Mary Anns son) who had visited his family in 1919 after the war.
He was specifically looking for a branch of the family who emigrated to Australia. I have no idea if he got hold of Lionel however I found his letter in Lionels military records.
Lionel's mother Mary Ann Gleeson has been a huge brick wall for me so I pounced on this info that Reed was a 2nd cousin in the attempt to break that wall

I have traced Alberts family back (and  incidentally found the aunt who moved to Australia)
Alberts paternal  Grandmother was Jane Reed nee Curry - born Slaley Northumberland c 1820 . According to her marriage record her father was Oliver Curry.
I can find no other trace of Oliver Curry. It is likely Oliver Curry is the common ancestor - so I wonder if  one of his daughters may have been Mary Ann Gleesons close relative.

Canada Lookup Request / A.E.REED ex Captain Canadian WW1 Expeditionary Force
« on: Sunday 28 February 16 05:39 GMT (UK)  »
Im trying to trace the above man who lived in Winnipeg Manitoba in 1919 after WW1. (he later moved to Toronto where he was living in 1948)
The reason for trying to find the family of this man is that I found a letter from him in the Military file of the brother of my G Grandfather.
My GGrandfathers mother is a huge brick wall on my family tree and the letter ( written in 1948) which was in his file from A.E Reed said that he was a second cousin and was looking for the address of his cousin Lionel who had visited his family in 1919. He was trying to trace other relatives in relation to disbursements of a will of a deceased relative in England.  If I could find who that relative was it may break down my brick wall!!
Any help gratefully received.

My 2x Great Grandmother has been a great source of frustration for me. Her death certificate and that of my G Grandfather stated she was born in Dublin. She certainly grew up in Dublin according to her obituary, however the birth certificates for 3 of her other children ( all reported by her husband) state she was born in Leeds England .
She emigrated to New Zealand from Ireland in 1875 aged approx 17 and was working as a domestic in County Kerry at the time.  My search for her was always in Ireland until I found these 3 birth certificates giving her birth place as Leeds.
Her parents names on her death certificate are listed as James and Mary Lester but this is incorrect as she emigrated to New Zealand  as Mary Ann Gleeson and married as Mary Ann Gleeson and Gleeson is listed as a maiden name on all her children's birth certificates. The Lester's must have been important people though as Lester is a name that is passed down in our family numerous times.
I looked at the Mary / Mary Ann Gleesons born in the (very) broad Leeds  area and found one child in the 1861 census who might fit the bill - In sheffield - listed as a visitor with a Kelly family from Ireland  . All the other Mary Anns I can trace through to the 1870s so cant be my Mary Ann.
I ordered a birth certificate for the one I was sure was the one in the census - born 24th August 1858 but it is not her - the one I got the certificate for was daughter of John Gleeson private in the 19th regiment and Maria - I find John and Mary/Maria in Lancashire in 1861 so not the one with the Kelly family that I found in SHeffield in 1861 .
None of the other births I can see registered seem to work for this Mary Ann living in Sheffield in 1861 - maybe someone else can see something I cant see- Im hoping so because Id love to be able to break down this brick wall.

If anyone is decscended from the Mary Ann who's certificate I have though,  Im happy to send it on!!

Norfolk Lookup Requests / SPINKE family Forncett St Peters Norfolk
« on: Monday 08 February 16 07:58 GMT (UK)  »
I recently started rechecking some facts on one branch of my family tree and found I had the wrong spouse for my 4x G Grandfather. This has meant Im starting from scratch on this branch.
The wrong spouse I had for my Charles Goodrum should have been Sarah Doe ( born 1794 Forncett St Peters . I found that Sarah Doe's parents were William Doe and Lucy Spinke but Ive been unable to find a birth for Lucy Spinke, though there seem to be Spinke family in that parish for a while before that .
Does anyone have any further info on the Spinke family and in particular Lucy?
