Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Soviet Passport
« on: Friday 05 January 24 12:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I would really appreciate any attempt at transcribing place of birth and place of residence in the attached extract of a Soviet passport from the 1920s. I have included other surviving bits of text, which may help.

My closest guess is the raion for place of birth is Poltava.

Thanks,

Ben

Ireland / John Cooper + Ann Logan marriage - c1854
« on: Saturday 18 April 15 13:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find a marriage between John Cooper and Ann Logan. Unfortunately, can't seem to find anything anywhere! I have searched the UK and Irish indexes. I suspect they married c1854 based on their first child's date of birth. Possibly in Ireland, possibly in Lancashire. Their names are confirmed from their childrens' birth certificates.

--

What I know:
John Cooper was born c 1826 in Ireland.
Ann Logan was born c1830 in Co. Derry, Ireland.

They appear together in the 1861+ UK censuses, living at Consett in Durham.

They have numerous children including:
  • Mary Ann Cooper - 1855
  • Margaret Cooper - 1857
  • John Cooper - 1858
  • Isabella Cooper - 1861
  • Robert Cooper - 1863
  • Elizabeth Cooper - 1864
  • Edward Cooper - 1866
  • Rachel Cooper - 1869
  • Hugh Cooper - 1870
Based on where there children were born (according to censuses), they lived in the following places from 1855:
  • 1855 - Liverpool, Lancashire - Mary Ann Cooper
  • 1857 - Penlington, Lancashire - Margaret Cooper
  • 1858 - Rotherham, Yorkshire - John Cooper
  • 1861 - Consett, Durham

Any ideas?

Hi,

Any help locating a John Dixon in the 1861 census would be appreciated.
I cannot find his marriage record. The 1911 census suggests he was married in 1860, but his first child is born mid-1860s. If I can find him in the 1861 census then that should help with identifying the correct marriage record or even his partner's maiden name.

John Dixon was baptised in 1835, in Long Horsley. His parents were Robert Dixon and Mary Young (confirmed).

I have identified 1841, 1851, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 records.

Census records:

John Dixon was employed as a coal miner

1841: Born 1835; Northumberland. Living with parents; Robert Dixon and Mary Young. Residing in Long Horsley, Northumberland
1851: Born 1836; Long Horsley, Northumberland. Living with parents; Robert Dixon and Mary Young. Residing in Cowpen, Northumberland
1871: Born 1836; Long Horsley, Northumberland. Living with wife, Ann, and children John Walter Dixon (aged 5) and Margaret Ann Dixon (aged 2). Residing in Cowpen, Northumberland
1881: Born 1836; Long Horsley, Northumberland. Living with wife, Ann, and children John Walter Dixon, Margaret Ann Dixon, Mary Jane Dixon (aged 9) and Elizabeth Eleanor Dixon (aged 7). Residing in Whitley, Northumberland
1891: Born 1836; Long Horsley, Northumberland. Living with wife, Ann, and child John Walter Dixon. Residing in Cowpen, Northumberland
1901: Born 1836; Long Horsley, Northumberland. Living with wife, Ann, and child John Walter Dixon. Residing in Cowpen, Northumberland

1911: Born 1836; Long Horsley, Northumberland. Living with wife, Ann Dixon. Residing in Cowpen, Northumberland. Married for 51 years. Their 1911 return was incorrectly completed - they also provided the details for all their children and then crossed those out. They remain legible, however.

The 1911 confirms their children to be:
  • John Walter Dixon, age 43, married, dead, born at Tyne Docks, Co Durhamv
  • Margret Ann Dixon, age 35, married, dead, born at Tyne Docks, Co Durham
  • Mary Jane Dixon, age 39, married, born at Newsham, Northumberland
  • Elizabeth Eleanor Dixon, age 37, married, born at Burradon, Northumberland
  • Stephen Henderson Dixon, age 1, single, Born at Burradon, Northumberland
Either Mary Jane or Stephen Henderson was also dead at the time of the 1911 census (3 dead, 2 alive of children).

Thanks,

Ben

Wiltshire / Elizabeth Archard otherwise Hayes of Crudwell (c1700-?)
« on: Thursday 18 July 13 14:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'd be extremely grateful for any help with identifying the parents of Elizabeth Archard Hayes.

Her sons, John White(J2) and George White(G2) were baptised at Hankerton (1728 and 1729). In both cases, her surname was written as "Archard otherwise/alias hayes" and she is described as of Crudwell. There are several Archard als Hays of Crudwell according to Wiltshire Archives catalogue. She married George White of Hankerton and Tetbury at Sherston Magna in 1726. George White (G1) was from a reasonably wealthy family - both his children would have significant inheritances.

I have, however, been unable to find a baptism record (or  any evidence as to who her parents might be) in the parish registers for Crudwell or any of the neighbouring parishes. There is a family tree on Ancestry which has her parents as Giles Archard alias Hayes and Edith Ludlow but, given it has no source, I think that's purely based on the fact that Giles and Edith married in Crudwell at approximately the 'correct' time.

I do, however, have a strong suspicion she is related to a character called "John Weakes". Potentially, Weakes is her mother's maiden name?

John Weakes's will (a solicitor's copy, dated 1749) mentions the following relatives:
  • Kinsman George White [G2] son of George [G1] and Elizabeth White (both deceased)
  • Kinsman John White son (and heir-at-law) of George and Elizabeth White (both deceased)
  • Kinsman John Archard otherwise known as Hayes
  • Kinswoman Mary Chambers widow of Giles Chambers of Nailsworth, Horsley
  • Giles Chambers son of Mary Chambers (less than 18 years old)
  • Giles Archard otherwise known as Hayes of Tetbury
  • Kinsman John, Henry and Mary, children of Henry Archard otherwise known as Hayes (deceased)

Various deeds describe John Weakes as "Great-Uncle" to George White [G2].

Any assistance would be hugely appreciated :)

Thanks,

Ben

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Benjamin Lee of Leeds Will - 1795
« on: Wednesday 26 June 13 12:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Am trying to find a will for a Benjamin Lee of Leeds who was buried 1 September 1795 at St John the Evangelical, Leeds. His will was not proved at PCC. Is anyone able to confirm whether it was proved at Prerogative and Exchequer Court of York?

He was probably an innkeeper as his wife ran the 'Pack-Horse' inn in Woodhouse, Leeds after his death. His executors were probably his brother John Lee (merchant of 223 Borough, Southwark) and brother-in-law William Hargrave (tobacconist of Market-Place, Leeds).

He had a considerable freehold estate including the pub, "twenty-eight Cottages, two stables, and other outbuildings thereto adjoining" which was sold following his death.

Any assistance appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben

Hi,

Would anyone please be able to help colour and date this photo please. I have an idea as to who one of the two individuals is and thus what date this photo may have been taken.

Would really also appreciate a 'guess' at the two individuals' ages.

Apologies for the image quality, this is a photo of an copy. I cannot get better access to the original.

Many, many thanks,

Ben

Hi,

Would really appreciate assistance with colourising this photo which I believe to be of my gggrand parents.

If anyone can provide an approximate date range, would also be helpful. I have a strong belief as to date, based on who I think the children are but want to make sure my beliefs fit with the evidence.

Many thanks,

Ben
