This is a portrait painting given to me by my Taid (grandfather). Years ago I received photos of it and he said it was his father's grandfather, which led me to think he was 'Edward'.

Recently I have received the actual painting, it measures approx 15.5 x 18 x 2/8". It was in a modern frame (40 ish years?), and on the back of the frame was written 'Richard Rowlands' (somewhere along the way some had wrongly added in the middle name and dates of my great-Taid's father - I know it isn't him, as I have photos of him). There are no names on it, on the back someone has written 'very special' and possibly an initial (maybe a H)?

So.. I'm thinking he may well be a Richard Rowlands, but I have at least two others on my direct line -

Richard Rowlands 1794-1874. In the 1851 census he was listed as Alderman of the City, and Master Smith. He's a Toll Collector on others.

Then..

Richard Rowlands 1733-1799. He was the Mayor of Dinas in 1793.

So I'm looking for ideas on who would have a painting like this done, and why, is it possible to date it in any way from hairstyle/clothing? Could it have been done at a later date/maybe it's not 'Richard' afterall.. argh!

I hope some of this makes sense, sorry it's long-winded!

Thanks for any ideas!

Emma :)

Hi, I tried to post a portrait painting in the dating photographs forum on Tuesday evening. It said it would need a moderators approval, but I still can't see it, so now I'm unsure if I posted it correctly (been a few years since I used the forum), or whether it wasn't allowed as not a photo, or whether I'm just being over keen! Is this an average time to wait?

Thank you :)

World War One / Trying to find Sergeant William D Price 16437 RWF
« on: Tuesday 26 August 14 16:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi :)

A friend of mine has a 1914/15 star named to Sergeant Price, it was found alongside his grandfather's medals, but he has no idea why, nor knows anything more about it. He asked if I could help finding out more about this man, in the hope of perhaps returning the medal to his family.

I have found his MIC, which states he was demobbed in February 1919, but I can't find a service record so have no idea of his DOB or where he was from, or even what the 'D' in his name stands for.

I'm racking my brains as to how to progress further with this, so thought I'd ask here for any ideas.

Thanks,
Emma

World War One / Medal Index Cards - extra info from Kew?
« on: Sunday 15 June 14 20:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi :)

I have found a MIC on Ancestry that I think relates to a man from a family I'm researching - George W Healy, born about 1899, of the Royal Fusiliers, number GS/67809.

I thought I remembered reading that there is possibly more information to be gleaned from these indexes, so I found it on the National Archives - if I download this is it going to give me any more info than the card I've already seen, or do I need to go to Kew?

Thank you,
Emma

Flintshire / Kings Head Terrace, Meliden - where was it?
« on: Monday 05 May 14 21:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi :)

I am researching the War Memorial (1914-1918) at Meliden - specifically this man at the moment: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=685538.msg5297704#msg5297704

In his records he is listed as being from 'Kings Head Terrace, Meliden'. The latest I have a reference to this address is in 1923 from his daughter's parish marriage record. However, when I look at google maps of Meliden, nothing shows up. Does anybody know where it would have been and when it would have changed it's name? I read yesterday that Meliden used to have seven pubs, so I'm guessing the King's Head may have been one of them..

Thanks,
Emma

World War One / War Memorial Confusion - Charles Furber
« on: Wednesday 30 April 14 09:25 BST (UK)  »
Hello  :)

I have recently started researching the War Memorials in my local area, to add to this project that a local couple started some years ago: http://www.flintshirewarmemorials.com/

I am researching the Meliden Memorial at the moment - listed here on a local family history site: http://www.clwydfhs.org.uk/cofadeiladau/meliden_wm.htm

I decided to start with Charles Furber, as it seems nothing is known about him.

I checked the list of Flintshire war dead here: http://www.flintshire.gov.uk/en/LeisureAndTourism/Records-and-Archives/Databases/War.aspx?s=furber and find only two Furbers - Charles is listed as living at 'Kings Head Terrace, Meliden' so fits with him being the man on the Memorial.

However, I go to CWGC.org and I can't find him.. I do find an 'E Furber', No. T4/087194
Date of Death: 16/11/1918, Age: 34, Regiment/Service: Army Service Corps, who's additional notes say 'Husband of Amy Furber, of Kingshead Terrace, Meliden, Flintshire' -  So I think at this point that his initial may be a transcription error.

There is a Medal Rolls Index Card which shows a (mis-transcribed) Elyah Furber, of Cheshire Regiment, Army Service Corps.

(I haven't found either in the UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914-1918).

I then look for marriages between surname Furber and first name Amy, and find an Elijah Furber marrying an Amy Probyn, in the last quarter of 1904, in Chester, Cheshire. Then I find a child - Elijah James Furber - born in Cheshire in 1912, mothers maiden name Probyn - who died locally to me, in Rhuddlan, Clwyd.

So, my (very long winded - sorry!) question is: Who is Charles Furber? Have I made a simple slip up somewhere that I have missed, and can anyone help solve my mystery please?!

Thanks,
Emma

Flintshire / Gwernaffield - help finding burial plot of my gggrandparents, please.
« on: Tuesday 05 February 13 11:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi :)

I'm looking to find the grave/s of my g.g.grandparents - Fred Jones was buried 25 June 1940, and his wife Annie Jones was buried 27 July 1959.

I have seen the parish records which show the funerals took place in Gwernaffield, however when I visited the cemeteries I couldn't find their grave/s (I don't know if they are buried separately or together) and I wondered if anyone had the plot records for Gwernaffield church. I have found other family members there, and would love to find my grandparents too.

Thank you,
Emma :)

Caernarvonshire / COMPLETED - Richard Howel Rowlands - Caernarfon Herald
« on: Friday 30 November 12 18:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi :)

I'm looking for any advice on where I may find out about the history of the Caernarfon Herald newspaper, and particularly my great great grandfather, Richard Howel Rowlands b.1864 (also known as Dick Herald) who was the Secretary and Cashier at the newspaper from 1885 until his death in 1903.

I have a family photo of his (rather large) funeral procession, but have not been able to find an obituary or anything else online.

I have tried to contact the newspaper directly but my emails are not getting through, I'm really keen to try and research him further, as I have never even seen a photograph of him.

Thank you,

Emma

Family History Beginners Board / Payments for illegitimate children.
« on: Thursday 02 August 12 21:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi :)

I have been trying to trace the biological mother of my g.grandmother, who was adopted (topic here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,608820.msg4583071.html#msg4583071).

It had always been a family rumour/speculation that she was the daughter of a servant girl and one of the family from 'a big house', and today it has been suggested to me that regular payments may have been given towards her upbringing.

Can anybody tell me if or how it might be possible to obtain records of this sort please?

Thanks :)
