Lanarkshire / Looking for Colin McNaughton birth in Glasgow about 1819/1821
« on: Wednesday 18 February 15 20:07 GMT (UK)  »
I recently received from the Lothian Health Services documents regarding my x great grandfather, Colin McNaughton. He was admitted to the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh in 1849 for Tuberculosis, from which he subsequently died. One of the documents states that he was aged 30, and that his " native place " was Glasgow. The LHS archivist confirmed that "native place" did indeed, mean birthplace.

I have searched the OPR's on ScotlandsPeople for birth/baptismal details, but could find nothing. The same for Familysearch. I included all of Scotland in my searches, and the various spellings of McNaughton. I know that he was born about 1819/21 because this is re-confirmed on the 1841 Census of St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, where his age is shown as 20 years.

I did find a birth record for a Colin McNaughton born Glasgow on 30 Sep 1796, parents John McNaughton & Agnes Tassie. I thought he would make a good candidate for father of  "my" Colin McNaughton, but can't find a marriage ( or death ) for him. I should mention here that the names, John, Colin and Agnes have been used in just about every generation of this family - not that it necessarily means anything beyond "straw grasping".

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards, Bernard

Surrey Lookup Requests / 1841/1851 Census Lookup Please - LONGHURST
« on: Thursday 12 January 12 22:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hello RootsChatters:

I have a marriage between John LANGHURST and Ann LIDDINGTON on 12 Oct 1817 in Horton, Northants.

I have reason to believe that John LANGHURST might be a native of one of the Weald villages of Surrey, possibly Ockley, Abinger, Ewhurst or Wotton, where his last name would have most likely been spelled " LONGHURST ". Ann LIDDINGTON may have been born in Syresham, Northants about 1789.

Could SKS please see if this couple appears in either (or both) the 1841 and 1851, in one of those Surrey locations.

Many thanks in advance,

Bernard

Lanarkshire / Parish Registers St. Andrew's Cathedral, Glasgow - DUFFY & MCQUILLAN
« on: Wednesday 16 March 11 17:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hello RootsChatters:

I'm trying to find out more information on my 2x great grandfather, Thomas DUFFY and his wife, Judith/Judy/Julia MCQUILLAN, and their respective ancestry.

Here's what I know so far:

Both Thomas & Judith were born in Ireland about 1810, and possibly moved to Glasgow around 1830. They had four known children between 1831 and 1841 all baptised in St. Andrew's Cathedral, Glasgow. Sometime between the birth of their last child in 1841 and about 1848 Judith MCQUILLAN DUFFY died, and Thomas DUFFY married a Mary COYLE and they moved to Edinburgh. This is the index entry of the births/baptisms:

Catherine Duffy b. 13 March 1832, bts. 16 March 1832 - Parents Thomas Duffy and Judith, St Andrew's Glasgow
James Duffy b. 10 Sept. 1834, bts. 21 Sept. 1834 - Parents Thomas Duffy and Judith, St Andrew's Glasgow
Thomas Duffy b. 1 Sept. 1836, bts. 29 Sept. 1836 - Thomas Duffy and Judith McQuill, St Andrew's Glasgow
Andrew Duffy b. 9 June 1839, bts. 10 June 1839 - Thomas Duffy and Judith McQuillan, St Andrew's Glasgow
Andrew Duffy b. 17 Aug. 1841, bts. 18 Aug 1841 - Thomas Duffy and Judith McCullen, St Andrew's Glasgow
George Duffy b. 1 May 1849,, bts. 5 May 1849 - Thomas Duffy and Mary Coyle, St Mary's Cathedral Edinburgh

This how they looked in 1841 Census:

1841 Scotland Census

Thomas Duffey 30, agr. lab. b. Ireland
Julia Duffey 30   ( b. Ireland )
Cathrine Duffey 9
James Duffey 7
Thomas Duffey 5
James Dunn 20
John Beatman 21
Edward Stoker 30
James Wilson 30

Address: Clyde Terrace, Kirkfield Lanarkshire

The only other piece of information I have is that Thomas DUFFY was born in County Cavan, Ireland. That was taken from the 1851 census of St. Cuthbert's Edinburgh. No Scottish marriage, or burial for Judith has been found. Perhaps someone who has experience with the Parish Registers from St. Andrew's can provide more information about what they might contain. Any and all help would be gratefully appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Bernard

Completed Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Do I hear a"brick-wall" about to crumble ?
« on: Thursday 24 February 11 19:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters:

I have a Thomas LONGHURST who was born in Ockley, Surrey about 1795.
At some point he married a "Phillis" who, according to the 1861 census of Ockley was born in "Silverton, Northants". This was taken to be most likely"Silverstone".

I couldn't find a marriage for them anywhere in Surrey or Northants, until today. HOPEFULLY! I thought I had tried every conceivable option in Familysearch, but I put in just their first names and Northampton, and got the following:

Thomas LANGHURST = Phillis DUNCKLEY married Whittlebury, Northants
23 Jun 1818. I found out that Silverstone & Whittlebury are only a mile or so apart. Be still my beating heart ! ;D.

No birth/baptism for Phillis that I could find but there were other entries for the DUNCKLEY/DUNKLEY name in both towns.

Would SKS out there, possibly have access to the marriage records for Whittlebury, that perhaps will confirm the Surrey connection ?

Many thanks in advance.

Regards, Bernard

Cavan / Thomas DUFFY & Judith/Judy McQUILLAN
« on: Tuesday 25 January 11 16:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hello RootsChatters:

The above couple appear in the 1841 Census of Kirkfield, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Both are born in Ireland about 1810. The 1851 Census of Edinburgh has Thomas now being married to a Mary COYLE (b. Glasgow) and his birth place shown as Ireland, Cavan.

A search of the ScotlandsPeople records do not show a Scottish marriage for Thomas & Judith, nor does it show a death for Judith DUFFY (McQUILLAN).
Their first known child, Catherine DUFFY was born in Glasgow, St. Andrews in 1832, and their last, Andrew DUFFY in 1841, in the same parish.

Andrew DUFFY married Mary Ann PUGH/PEW in St. Patricks Chapel (RC), Edinburgh in 1869. His father is listed as: Thomas DUFFY, Labourer, and his mother: Julia DUFFY, m.s KENAN, deceased. The name MCQUILLAN appears on the birth/baptism of three of their children, so the majority ruled there :)

Are there any County Cavan records that might show a baptism and/or marriage for this couple ?

Many thanks in advance.

Regards, Bernard

Surrey / 1851 Census Lookup Please - WITENTON (?)
« on: Sunday 26 December 10 16:20 GMT (UK)  »

Hello RootsChatters:

Could someone please take a look at the 1851 Census for a Maria WITENTON in the Ockley/Abinger area. She married a Frederick LONGHURST in Ockley in 1856 and died in 1860.

I couldn't find a birth/baptism for her in the IGI using several different name variants. There is a marriage for a Thomas WHITTINGTON & Maria LAMBERT in 1833 in Leatherhead, but I didn't see a child that would 'match'.

Many thanks in advance.

Regards, Bernard
