Lanarkshire / Colvin-Buttery descendants
« on: Friday 12 February 16 11:16 GMT (UK)  »
On 4 June 1839, Mary Hope Johnstone Colvin (of Johnstone, Dumfriesshire) married Alexander Warren Buttery (of the Monkland Iron and Steel Company). Can anyone tell me anything about their descendants?

Fife / Unknown/mislaid source of marriage date - dunfermline area
« on: Monday 11 February 13 16:49 GMT (UK)  »
An e-mail contact was able to supply a date for a marriage between Henry Beveridge and Janet White/Whyte, i.e. 31 Oct 1794. They first lived together at Halbeath, where Henry was a coalminer. Further back, the Beveridge side is terra incognita, although there were an awful lot of coalhewing Beveridges around. On the White side we have possible ancestors. For neither of the two, however, can we be certain of their date of birth.

The problem is that my source mislaid the piece of paper he'd written this very believable date down on. We haven't been able to find where the date came from. Anyone any idea? We're running out of churches. When they migrated to the Ayrshire coalfield, Janet appears in 1836 as a member of the Established Church (i.e. Church of Scotland) in Stevenston.

Fife / Beveridge - White
« on: Sunday 14 September 08 23:44 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the parents of Henry Beveridge, born ca. 1775 in Fife. He married Janet White, conceivably the Janet White born in Dalgety in April 1781. Henry was a coalminer, and their first children were born in Halbeath. Their first four children were David, Andrew, Elizabeth, and Isobel.

The Janet White who was born in Dalgety parish had Andrew White and Elizabeth Blaick as parents.

I note a lot of recent discussion on Fife Beveridges on Roots Chat, and hope that someone has a Henry, with possible parents David and Isobel.

Monaghan / David Bruce of Ballybay [1847]
« on: Sunday 14 August 05 12:25 BST (UK)  »
In a letter written in 1847 it is stated that David Bruce, my great-great-granduncle, was Supervisor of Excise, Cappa Hall, Ballabey [so spelled in the letter], Monaghan.

By 1870 he was Collecting Supervisor of Excise, residing at Kirkwall, Orkney, in Scotland.

He was born in Watten, Caithness, Scotland in 1809.

How would I go about finding out how long he lived in Co. Monaghan?

He was apparently married to a cousin born in Clones, Sarah Gunn [born around 1805], whose father William Gunn was also from Watten, but whose mother was apparently Elizabeth Whiteside from Co. Monaghan.

Any further information would be very welcome.

Cumberland / Samuel Smith of Cumberland?
« on: Saturday 13 August 05 15:32 BST (UK)  »
Samuel Smith of Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland married Elizabeth Beveridge (b. Fife, 1799) in Stevenston, Ayrshire, on 4 Nov 1821.

He was a blacksmith. His birthdate/place cannot be located, nor those of his three sons  William (b. ca. 1822), Henry (b. ca. 1824), and Samuel (b. ca. 1827). All three married in Ayrshire, William and Samuel being colliery engine keepers, and Henry a miner.

My father claimed that the family were farriers in Cumberland. Conceivably Samuel came from there to Ayrshire. Does anyone have a deadend Samuel in their family-trees? And was there any migration from mining areas in Cumberland to those in Ayrshire at the turn of the 18th/19th century?

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Bogues in Dartford and Wilmington
« on: Wednesday 06 July 05 15:19 BST (UK)  »
The Bogue families of the 18th century in Dartford and Wilmington appear to descend from James Bogue who died on 18 Aug 1782. In IGI it says born 1730, Dartford, but I suspect this is just a guess.

He appears to have had three children at least James (II) [chr. 23 Apr 1758, Wilmington], Mary and Isabel [also in IGI] and maybe others.

James (II) married Susan(na) Brazier, and they had 13 children in Dartford [in IGI].

Can anyone give me any further details on the family. I am especially interested in the origins of the first James Bogue.

Fife / Beveridges Halbeath
« on: Sunday 03 July 05 13:17 BST (UK)  »
Henry Beveridge married Janet Whyte/White around 1794/5, and had 9 children in Halbeath and Burnturk:

David 1795
Andrew 1797
Elizabeth 1799
Isobel 1801
Helen 1802
John 1806
James 1809
Henry 1814
Janet ??

As Janet's parents were Andrew White and Elizabeth Blaick it is reasonable to assume that Henry's were a David and an Isobel. Does anyone have any ideas on this? This was a mining family.

Also, does anyone have ideas where we could look for the marriage of Henry and Janet. It was probably not a church wedding due to Janet's possible youth. She may have had her first child at not quite 14. Of course, it was legal for girls to marry in Scotland at the age of 12, and for boys at 14. Although this apparently was not very frequent.

I wonder if anyone could look up George Bogue who died in Pembroke in the last quarter of 1851. Does he appear in the 1841 census?
