The Lighter Side / Great grand xxxx
« on: Friday 23 September 16 21:51 BST (UK)  »
G'day everyone,
I was reading a legal document recently and something in it referring to how we address people caught my eye.
Most people nowadays have parents, we know them as our father and mother. They had parents who are our GRAND parents, grandfather & grandmother. Their parents were our GREAT GRAND parents, and so on.
Going the other direction, if we have children they are our sons & daughters, Their children are our GRAND children, grandsons & granddaughters, and their children will be our GREAT GRAND children, and so on.
What caught my eye was the words 'greatniece' & 'greatnephew', the children of a niece. Strange, I thought, shouldn't that be grandniece & grandnephew? Then it occured to me that in my family our grandfather's sister was referred to as 'greataunt xxxx'. I have noticed other people using the same terminology as well, so its not just in my family.
So, I guess that the questions are, what is 'correct', what do great & grand mean, is there a difference and does it really matter? (And the answer is not 42, although it might well be).
Cheers

Australia / Edith Ruth Andrews
« on: Monday 21 December 15 03:52 GMT (UK)  »
My third Cousin, once removed, was Edith Ruth Woodhouse born 1892 in Redhill, Surrey, England. Her parents were Frank Lepine Woodhouse and Elizabeth Bellingham Grout.

From 1916 to 1920 she travelled between London, Hong Kong and Canada, being employed by Stanley Hudson Dodwell.

After 1920 I cannot find any reference to her, no marriage or death, until I found an Australian Death Index for Edith Ruth Andrews who died in 1978 in Surrey Hills, Victoria. Her parents were Fran Woodhouse and Elizabeth Bell Grant.

Between 1928 and 1947 she appears to have travelled, first with husband Arthur Andrews and later with children, between UK and Hong Kong at least twice.

So, I guess that the question is, is this the same person and how did she get to Australia?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1594 Baptism
« on: Sunday 15 March 15 00:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi to all you eagle eyes.

I can understand most of the second entry as follows:

??????  williter sonne of william williter
was baptised the 18 of march Anno      1594

The 4 leftmost characters appear against all entries, the first character of which is the same as the 1st of the Christian name. I'm fairly sure that the month is March.

Anybody have any idea what the young chap's name might be?

Oxfordshire Completed Look Up Requests / Watlington road name
« on: Thursday 29 May 14 04:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am researching distant family in Watlington, Oxfordshire. In the 1841 & 1851 censuses they lived in Hog Lane, which is now Chapel Street. In the 1861 census they lived in Back Lane, which I cannot find on old maps of the period. Nearby premises were Spring Cottage in Hill Road and The Carrier's Arms also in Hill Road.
Does anyone have any idea where Back Lane was or is?
