Sussex / Petworth Cemeteries - Which One?
« on: Friday 02 August 13 13:46 BST (UK)  »
Hello All:  I am trying to locate where my great grandfather, Joshua Skinner, would be buried.  His death was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1938 in the district of Midhurst.  He had apparently worked at the Petworth Manor, likely in the capacity of tending to horses and livestock.  In the 1911 census, he resided at Humboldt Cottages in Petworth, which I presume was part of the estate.  Would anyone know which cemetery would be likely resting place?  Any information you may have regarding the estate or the Humboldt Cottages would be appreciated.

Hello:  I have recently discovered that my ancestor, Edward Johnson (born 1808 in Weston) had lived most of his life in Hatfield Hyde.  The 1851 through 1871 censuses show him as living in that village with his wife, Sarah.  The 1881 census shows an Edward Johnson (widowed) as an inmate of the Hatfield Union Workhouse.  A parish death record on FindMyPast.uk shows him to have died in 1890 and buried at St. Etheldreda Church, which I believe is in Hatfield.  Sarah Papper Johnson is also shown to be buried at this church yard in 1875.  Can someone please clarify a few points for me...

Was it likely that an inmate of this workhouse would have been buried at Etheldreda church?

Where would the deceased inhabitants of this workhouse ordinarily be buried?

It is realistic for someone to actually remain in the workhouse for such a lengthy period?  Edward would have been there for at least 9 years, if in fact, it is him that is identified as the inmate of that workhouse.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Reverend F W Parkes and British Home Children
« on: Wednesday 31 July 13 14:13 BST (UK)  »
Hello All:  I have been researching my family history and discovered that my father, Albert Edward Johnson, along with his younger brother William, were British Home Children who were sent to Canada in 1914 at the ages of 14 and 12 respectively.  One of the documents that I received after contacting Barnardo's orphanage showed that the boys were sent to them by "a friend", Reverend F. W. Parkes of 14 Trinity Sqaure, Borough.  I have tried "googling" his name and address, but have come up empty.  Does anyone have any information on this Reverend Parkes and what his role may have been in the BHC saga.  The boys had lived in Highgate, at the North Road Cottages.  Their mother had died in 1910 and their father had apparently lived with them up to the census in 1911.  That census shows that the boys, along with 2 other siblings, lived with their father and uncle at 67 North Road Cottages.  After that, the next known event in their lives was to be sent to Bernardo's and from there, to Canada.  I would like to know any details of their lives between the census and their arrival in Canada in 1914.  This is why I would like to find out any information about Reverend Parkes and what his role in the whole affair may have been.

Thank you
Douglas Johnson

Hello Everyone:  I have just discovered several parish records which show several ancestors who have been buried in Baldock.  I am having some difficulty in determining which church is connected to those parish records.  I don't quite understand what a "parish" actually is.   Could there be several churches connected to one parish?  Would each church have its own register or would the data have been complied in one parish book?  If a record shows a person to have been buried in 1718 in Baldock, where would the cemetery be located?  Is it at St. Mary's churchyard?  Would there be some other location in the area?

I have found other ancestors who appear in the Weston parish records.  I would presume that they would have been buried in the grounds of the Holy Trinity Church in Weston.  Or is there some other place I should be looking.  Thank you for any help you may be able to offer.

Hello Everyone:  Does anyone know how to find out who is buried in the churchyard at the Holy Trinity Church in Weston Hertfordshire?  I am specifically looking for William Johnson, born in 1778 and died in January of 1827.  I have tried to search the internet for a reference to the burials, but cannot find anything.  I can see some photos of the church and there is clearly a cemetery on the grounds, but I cannot find a link to contact anyone.  thank you

Armed Forces / British Army Soldier - Died in Trimulgherry
« on: Saturday 02 February 13 19:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hello:  I have just discovered that my uncle, Walter Henry Johnson, born in 1908 had died in Trimulgherry India in 1932.  No other information was given except to say that the "record source is GRO Army Death Indices of 1881 to 1955".  I do not know what this means.  Would there be any army  enlistment records available on either Ancestry.uk or Findmypast.uk?  Is the date of death too recent to allow for any on-line public records?  How could I find out about my uncle's military past and how he died?  I have done a Google search, but I am puzzled as to what the British army was doing in this area in 1932.

Dorset / Cemeteries in Lytchett Minster
« on: Thursday 24 January 13 18:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hello:  I live in Canada and am planning a trip to England in September 13.  I would like to visit the Lytchett Minster area as a great number of my "Skinner" ancestors appear to have been born there.  I would like to know the name of the cemetery where they would most likely have been buried.  As well, is there a main church where marriages and baptisms would have taken place for people who were born and died in Lytchett Minster.  There were also a number of "Fancys" in my tree and I understand they came primarily from Turner's Puddle.  There is a picture of a church in Turner's Puddle on the internet.  Would that be the likely place for marriages and burials in that hamlet?  Thank you for any assistance.

Hertfordshire Lookup Requests / 4 Blue Row at The Grove 1871
« on: Tuesday 22 January 13 01:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hello:  I recently found my great grandfather, Samuel Gibson, in the 1871 census.  His address is shown as 4 Blue Row, The Grove, in Hertfordshire.  His occupation is listed as "carman".  He is shown to be a boarder.  Can anyone clarify for me what it would have meant to live "at The Grove".  Would he have been employed by the estate?  I understand that "carman" could mean that he worked for a railway, or perhaps as some sort of delivery man.  He was only 26 years old at the time and lived with other boarders at this address.  Is Blue Row still standing?  I cannot find it on Google Earth.  Why would anyone reside at "The Grove" if they did not work there?  Is, or was, there a railway station at The Grove?  Thank you in advance.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Islington Cemetery - What to Expect
« on: Saturday 01 September 12 14:33 BST (UK)  »
I live in Canada and plan to visit London next year.  My father was a British Home Child and was sent to Canada in 1914.  From the information noted on Deceased.online, I have determined that my grandmother, Kate Annie Johnson, was buried in Islington Cemetery.  She died on 17 May 1910.  The information shows a reference number of Z/15505 and also indicates that she was buried "with 15 others".  From this, I presume that this was some sort of paupers' field and that there would not be any specific marker.  Would this location still be accessible?  Is it possible to visit the burial site even if it was a common grave?  What could I expect to see with this location?  Would it be an open field or would it have been used again later?  Thank you for your help.
