Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Where to store it all!
« on: Thursday 22 August 13 16:30 BST (UK)  »
Being a believer in 'modern technology' it came as some suprise that a 'half niece'? is storing her records on lining paper in biro so she can see the whole picture and scribble updates and corrections as she discovers them.  I would prefer to store it on some form of disk, but the question is, I have G.S.P Family tree, I find this O.K. but no-one else seems to be using it and when I make an enquiry about this program I'm stumped.

Whet is the easiest/most common computer system for genealogical data storage?

Cheers,  ???  Tony.

« on: Sunday 03 March 13 17:35 GMT (UK)  »

Someone entered a comment on a thread I started about Granny and Grandads grave in Chelmsford cemetery,  our new computer will not let us click on the long blue 'code' to access directly and I cannot find the original plea.  I believe part of your username was -'head

If you were kind enough to contact me could you do so by private message this time?

I promise to try and improve my computer skills!  Cheers,   Tony.

Family History Beginners Board / What a nasty nasty man!
« on: Tuesday 01 January 13 15:09 GMT (UK)  »
This is my first opinion of my Great Grandfather William Oakes.  He left (abandoned / deserted) his son Arthur Charles Oakes with the Fulham Union Workhouse on the 12th of November 1885!  William then ups sticks and sails to Canada 'to join family for 1 year'.  Was this a regular/normal occurence?

I don't know the full circumstances but this flippin' family of mine gets worse and worse. :o

Your thoughts fellow forum members?    Cheers,   Tony.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / The second puzzler.
« on: Monday 31 December 12 16:22 GMT (UK)  »
This is a Purser's sheet.  The name OAKES is about three or four from the bottom, but I cannot read the column headings towards the left hand side of the page and the ones to the right of "Name in Full" are difficult also.

Lancashire / "Me Dad's" first wife.
« on: Tuesday 25 December 12 13:10 GMT (UK)  »

I have discovered that my Father was married previously to him marrying me Mam when I was 10 years old.  The wedding certificate tells me his name was Andrew Charles Phillips (no it wasn't, but that is another story) ! ?

his wife's name was Lily Manchester and they married at the Parish Church South shore Lancaster on the 9th of June 1931.  Her Dad's name William Manchester (deceased) a Bolt Maker? They were married from 85 Threlfall Road South shore. (I believe this may be a suberb of Blackpool).  Lily may have been a Roman Catholic but not knowing much about religion I may be wrong.  It is her family I should like to trace.

Dad's real name was Arthur John Humphrey Oakes, but what he got up to to make him change all his forenames and his surname, I have yet to discover!  On the marriage certificate he said his Dad was a seamen called Andrew Phillips, as before, no it wasn't, but that is yet another chapter of the puzzle.
Any info or help very gratefully received.    Cheers,   Tony.

This plea from the heart has nothing to do with E.D. institution, or vessel:  but it is the only way I can find to put a message on the forum. ! :'(

Where is the list of forum topics,  where is the 'latest messages' or 'today's messages'?  It is really making me reconsider staying on this site.  If there was a smilie for "Extreme Frustration" it would be here.  This seems to be the only page I can see as it is open every time I contact Rootschat.

HELP.     Cheers,   Tony.
