London and Middlesex / Charles Francis Bush
« on: Friday 14 February 25 06:20 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching Charles Francis Bush born Marylebone 1st quarter of 1902.  Found this info. in Births index which gives the reference Vol.1a Page519.  There is no indication of the parents names.  I am fairly sure his mother is Louise Bush.  In the 1911 Census Charles Francis Bush is living with his mother Louise Thresa Bush and Franz Nickolay.  My main interest is to identify his father and to identify Louise Bush in the 1921 Census which I have been not been able to access.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Kent / Mockford Alley Tenterden
« on: Saturday 18 December 21 07:17 GMT (UK)  »
While searching the name Stephen Tamkin, found the Census of both 1851 and 1841 has his address as Mockwood Alley.  The originals are both in different handwriting.  I know there is a Mockford Alley off the High Street.  Can anyone please verify if that Alley had a name change at some time?  There are possibly several other mistakes, in that what seems to be the same family are Tomkin in 1851 and Sarah aged 39 in 1841 is Sarah 59 with a ? in 1851.  My main person of interest is Stephen Tamkin and and if there is any information about that family prior to his father John, or if there is anyone out there researching this family.
Cheers

Clare / Michael MALONEY
« on: Thursday 02 December 21 14:30 GMT (UK)  »
Michael Maloney was born C1851, possibly in Currafin, which I believe is in County Clare Ireland.  His parents may have been John Maloney and Mary Whalan.  Michael, sometime before 1874, left Ireland for USA where he married Susan Kilmartin in Providence Rhode Island.  Between 1876 and 1878 they came to NSW Australia and settled in Queanbeyan NSW.  I have well documented history regarding Susan and Michael from the time they landed in Australia and have not been able to find anything on them beforehand.
Any information would be gratefully accepted.  Thank You bkr188

Tipperary / Edward Woods and Mary Fisher from County Tipperary
« on: Tuesday 30 November 21 13:24 GMT (UK)  »
Edward Woods and Mary nee Fisher arrived in Sydney aboard the "Glenswilly" as Bounty Immigrants on 11th March 1841.  The ships manifest says they are farm servants from Cashel, might be Cashill.  Edwards parents were Edward and Winnifred Woods and Marys parents George and Mary Fisher.  Neither surnames seems very Irish.  A cousin tried to find information on these people, no luck.  They did state their religion was RC, they were illiterate and in good health and were brought to the colony by Ships Agent John Marshall.  I am wondering if anyone knows if records are available in the Cashel area for 1810 - 1841 which might have these names listed.  Thank you bkr188

Kent / Mary Bishop, daughter of Nicholas Bishop jnr.
« on: Tuesday 05 June 18 08:32 BST (UK)  »
This is a bit "long winded" - apologies.  Citing the Rolvenden Church Register in 1992 I found, Mary Bishop, the daughter of Nicholas Bishop as being baptized 3-12-1856.  (I shall call her Mary 1)  Her sister Elizabeth baptized 24-8-1858 and sister Albina baptized 14-8-1861.  So, I know this is correct as according to the church records.   Mary appears in the 1861 Census as a daughter aged 4 living with Nicholas and Fanny Bishop at Lowden Farm in Rolvenden.  In the 1871 Census there is a Mary Bishop, born in Rolvenden aged 14 as a pupil at a boarding school in Beckley, with the household head being John and a wife Clementine, who is also the Governess of Boarding.  1881 Census has Mary Bishop aged 24,  a grandchild of Harriet Bishop (mother of Nicholas was Harriet and widowed by this time) living with Harriet at Church Yard Rolvenden.  Then Mary Bishop, daughter of Nicholas, marries Harry Cockett in 1889 in Folkestone Kent and the 1891 Census has her living with said husband at Ivy House Rolvenden.  They have children and Mary dies in 1900 aged 43.  All seems very straight forward.  Nicholas married Fanny Hughes in 1854 - they supposedly had 3 daughters - Fanny died in 1866.  Nicholas then marries Fanny Mills in 1868 and they have 8 children. The 1st being daughters Fanny and Harriet Elizabeth and the others are all boys.  All documented and verified.

Now the problem arises.  Rolvenden MI's entry no 218 has Fanny wife of Nicholas Bishop jnr of this parish died 7 June 1866 aged 32. Entry 218 goes on
MARY DAUGHTER OF NICHOLAS BISHOP jnr. DIED 15 APRIL 1863 AGED 3years 11months

This implies Mary being born between 16 May 1859 and 15 April 1859, when Mary(1) born 1856 is also alive,
and the MI record has Fanny Hughes and 2nd Mary together impyling they are mother and daughter. This Mary(2) is not at their house in the 1861 Census nor at the house of Nicholas' parents.  I know Mary(1) record in the church record is correct (1856) because the register was in chronological order.
Harriet, mentioned in the 1881 Census, had 3 children and Nicholas was the only boy, so she did not have any other Bishop family grandchildren. (other grandchildren would have been Dunk)

HELP!!!  Is one of the records incorrect, is one of the Mary's illegitimate or adopted?  Is there some sort of clue in MI inscription being so specific as to Marys (2) age?

I knew of a connection between the family Cockett and the family Bishop from a note I found about a photograph which said "Ethel Cockett, daughter of Polly Bishop (Cockett)" in 1950.  Is Polly Bishop the nickname for Mary (1)?  The people in the photo are well aged, probably 60ish.
I cannot confirm this but I think I saw a probate list where a Mary had a will in 1886 and the estate was granted to Nicholas Bishop, as was Probate from the Estates of Albina and Elizabeth.
I am at a complete loss at this point and any help would be fantastic.  Thank you.

London and Middlesex / SMITH, John Henry
« on: Saturday 30 December 17 04:57 GMT (UK)  »
John Henry Smith was born C1871 at St. Pancras and married May Ann Blackmore.  The 1901 Census have them living at 25 Peckwater Street, St. Pancras and he is a Post Office worker.  His wife supposedly born Chalk Farm London C1870 and their children Agnes born C1893, and John George C1895 were both born in Islington. I have information on John George and nothing more about the other 3, except that of the 1911 Census.  Any other information about them would be a lottery win.  Smith from London must be like Jones from Wales - where does one start!!!!!??????

Kent / Gyles Bishopp 1571 in Hunton
« on: Wednesday 15 February 17 00:40 GMT (UK)  »
A land contract document was sold by Khan Antiques some years ago indicating a Gyles Bishopp and his wife Agnes bought land in Hunton in 1571. This is the only indication some of us who are researching this family have had of Agnes. Might there be anyone on this fabulous forum who has information on Gyles and Agnes. I have a Giles married to Anne which could be the same persons and the name Ann Birt is on some trees, without verification, as the mother of this Gyles/Giles. We know they were Clothiers and were in the Sutton Valence and Hunton areas. Also any ideas on where one might find a copy of this document? The selling company of the document have not been able to help so far.
Thank you

Kent / Clothier
« on: Wednesday 14 October 15 05:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Giles Bishop, born about 1565 in Sutton Valence had an occupation as a "Clothier", as was most of his family for several generations.  Can anyone tell me what this occupation might have been?  I have assumed it could be someone who either made clothes, was a clothes merchant or a general worker in the cloth industry.  These have been definitions I have found from various dictionaries.

Was there a definite type of clothing industry in Sutton Valence, and also in Hunton where he moved to in the late 1590's?   Thank you, bkr
