Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Chalford - Cook
« on: Tuesday 31 March 09 21:04 BST (UK)  »
Would someone be kind enough to check the 1841 census for Chalford please.  I am hoping that George Cook was living there with his parents.  George should have been born c1821. Thanks. ;)

Lincolnshire / Rouse
« on: Sunday 14 December 08 16:01 GMT (UK)  »
I have discovered a Caroline Rouse born c1820 in Bourne/Grimsthorpe in Lincolnshire.  She was married (or maybe just living with) a Daniel Cook also known as George.  Although I cannot find a marriage certificate their first child was born in 1950 while they were supposed to be living in Lichfield.

This family have led me a very merry dance and I would be grateful for any further information.

Armed Forces / Boer War Recruiting
« on: Saturday 03 November 07 06:43 GMT (UK)  »
I have the records of an ancestor who enlisted in the Sth African Light Horse which, I understand, you had to already be in SA to enlist.  Would ther have been newspaper advertisements urging you to go to SA to assist?

I cannot find his name on any passenger list so am wondering why he went to SA and how he got there, particularly as not from a wealthy family.

Armed Forces / Boer War - Look Up Request
« on: Sunday 14 October 07 18:23 BST (UK)  »
I have discovered an ancestor (John Cooke) who states he was in the Sth African Light Horse until it was disbanded.  He was awarded the Queen's S. Africa 1902.  In 1905 he re-enlisted in the 7th Corps of Hussars at Potchefstroom.  I would really like to try and understand why he was in SA when he joined the SA Light Horse.

Armed Forces / Sth African Light horse

Discovered a relative, John Cooke had been in the  Sth African Light Horse and awarded Queen's S. Africa 1902.  From the brief record it appears he was discharged and then signed on again in 1905 at Potchefstroom for the Corps of Hussars.  Couldn't find any other records at Kew.  Any thoughts of where I can go from here?
