Pembrokeshire / Welch, Merriman and David (or variants of all) in Pembrokeshire
« on: Sunday 15 February 15 17:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I've managed to trace a line of my family back to David Welch (or Wealch) who was baptised on 8.12.1767 at Llandyfaelog, Carms.  The information I've managed to find for his baptism doesn't state his parents' names.
Likewise, I've found a reference to his marriage to Rachel Merriman (also spelled Rachael and Merryman!) in Penally, Pembrokeshire on 11.12.1798.  She was baptised on 19.9.1778 in Saint Issell, Pembrokeshire.
Their childrens' surnames are DAVID/DAVIES though, as it appears it was quite common back then for the children to take the father's first name as their surname - as is done in parts of Scandinavia still (children are John David 3.11.1800; Benjamin David ca.1802; and David David 1809).
I've had no luck finding anything for David or Rachel's parentage, and for all I know, their surnames are the first names of their fathers!  If anyone can offer any help with any of this, I'd be most grateful.
Many thanks.  :)

Banffshire / Fodderletter, Kirkmichael, Banffshire residence names
« on: Sunday 03 August 14 13:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi, can anyone help me with names of residences in the Fodderletter area of Kirkmichael, Banffshire?  I have tried old maps etc to no avail.  I have the following places mentioned on birth & marriage records as being at Fodderletter: East Bulbain, Balbain, Bailebain, Bailbain, Bulnabin, Bulnabine, Belnabing, Bulnabing, Buchnabine, and Buchnabing.  Some of the variants are due to transcription problems/errors.  Are these basically all the same place? Any help would be very much appreciated, thanks.

Banffshire / James Stuart, Ballindalloch/Inveravon, b.ca.1830
« on: Friday 25 October 13 13:15 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help with tracing this person?  He left Scotland before 1858, as he married in Swansea in that year and settled there till he died.  The middle name McPherson/MacPherson runs through the family.  I've been told that he was in Ballindalloch before going to Swansea and I've found a census entry in 1851 for a farm labourer at Rechlerich Farm (owned by Robert Hay).  I'd really like to try to trace James' origins/parents.  Oh, and I've also been told that they were Catholics.  His second son (also James) emigrated to Cook, Illinois and I am contemplating contacting someone I think might be a direct descendant still living there, but thought I'd try here first.  Any help anyone can give me would be very much appreciated  :)
