Aberdeenshire / Searching for Mary Andrew (M/S Gray)
« on: Wednesday 14 May 14 10:27 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the burial details of Mary Gray. She married Alexander Andrew in Kenmay,on 2 December 1826 and appears in the 1841 census living in Kintore. Their latest child (Jane) was born
in 1842, again in Kintore. She is not listed on the 1851 census with some of the family.

She was born about 1806.

Alexander married Mary Mathieson in 1851 in Kenmay. He was a blacksmith.

I am not able to locate any details on SP or any other site for her death details.

If anyone could assist, I would be most grateful

Thanks

World War One / Charles John Alexander and Family
« on: Tuesday 15 October 13 08:02 BST (UK)  »
I have a great uncle who was part of the Essex Regiment, named Charles John Alexander born 1891. His rank was private, number 40971, 11th battalion, D Company, and died in France 1 June 1918 of wounds. He was married to Florence M Alexander, and lived at 8 Adrian Road, Watford.

His sister was my grandmother.

I know he was buried in France but I have not been able to locate any of his army records or the reason for his death. He is listed on the Abbots Langley War Memorial and is in fact the first name on the list for the 1914-18 section, according to that website. Findmypast has only records of his death and burial at the Esquelbecq Military Cemetery, Nord, France but no other details

He was originally in the Royal Field Artillery as number 1919 before being transferred to the Northamptonshire Regiment as number 26797. I do not know his dates of transfer, but I suspect he came into the Essex Regiment in late 1917 or early 1918.

I have not been able to locate details of the full maiden name of his wife, whether they had any children and what happened to her after his death.

I would also appreciate any help with finding details of his army records with the RFA, when he joined, and the Northamptonshire Regiment and why he may have transferred to the Essex Regiment. He was originally in the Royal Field Artillery as number 1919 before being transferred to the Northamptonshire Regiment as number 26797. I do not know his dates of transfer.

Thanks
Ian

Armed Forces / 3rd Burmese war 1885-1887
« on: Friday 09 August 13 09:18 BST (UK)  »
I am attempting to trace some concrete evidence about John Robert Alexander.
John married Emma Harriett Favatt in Mhow, India in 1882, and in 1889, Charlotte Louisa Johns in Lucknow. Both of these marriages were listed in the Army record of marriages. Emma died after the second marriage. I don't have any details about Charlotte other than the marriage and their children from the 1911 census.

He married again in 1908, Elizabeth Shoobridge at Gretna Green and the 1911 census has the family listed at 59 Yarmouth Road, Watford with John's occupation being "Army Pensioner, Hall Porter".

Findmypast has a J R Alexander listed as being a gunner, 8th Battery, 1st Brigade London Division, Royal Artillery, with his number as 23389. His involvement was in the 3rd Burmese War 1885-1887. I have an understanding of that war from google searches.

However, that is as far as I can go so far in finding information about John.

Does anyone have information about his deployment or other details that I could research. he is not a direct ancestor, the uncle to my grandmother.

Thanks

Armed Forces / Royal Artillery Muster Rolls
« on: Sunday 28 July 13 09:11 BST (UK)  »
I have been searching for an ancestor, John Mellis. It appears John had connections with the Royal Artillery, probably between 1806 and 1818. Searches through Ancestry and Findmypast have not been successful, and the Curator at the Royal Artillery Museum suggests the only hope is for a search to be made of the Muster Rolls, only held at the National Archives and not available on line.

John and his wife Rachel had children 1820 to 1823 in the Gartly area, but it appears by 1832 appx Rachel and children moved to Aberdeen. The assumtion is that John had died around that time.

Before considering the option of a professional researcher, has anyone obtained access to these muster rolls in the period stated above for the Aberdeenshire area and perhaps Gartly in particular.

Thanks
Ian

Aberdeenshire / Mathieson/Mortimer From Oyne
« on: Friday 19 July 13 05:29 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information about my 2xG grandmother's parents John Mathieson and Mary Mathieson M/S Mortimer. Her name was Mary Andrew, M/S Mathieson.

Mary Andrew died in Newhills, Aberdeen 6 Feb 1907. Her husband Alexander Andrew died in 1861 in Daviot. He was a blacksmith.

John and Mary were married in Oyne, Aberdeenshire 11 November 1818. I have not been able to locate either in the census for 1841 and following. The first time daughter Mary Mathieson appears is in the 1851 census, the same year in which she married Alexander Andrew. Then she was in Daviot.

Family Search does not have any record for either John or Mary Mortimer, not does SP have any information that appears assist with being the correct ones. I have also not been able to confirm that the Oyne or Daviot cemeteries have their graves.

Any assistance would be most welcome.

Thanks

Aberdeenshire / Searching For John Mellis
« on: Monday 01 July 13 09:07 BST (UK)  »
I am attempting to find birth and death details for John Mellis. Family Search has a couple of John Mellis born around 1796, but I need other confirming information. SP does not have this information.
On 4 July 1821 he married Rachel Harvey in Gartly, Aberdeenshire. They had several children, some before their wedding. John 1820, Jean  mid 1821 and Robert in 1823 through whom is my line. There is also a possibility that another child Rachel ,was part of their family. I am not able to find where Rachel (nee Harvey) was buried, but records indicate she died in Aberdeen in 1859.

Son Robert moved to Aberdeen at some point as the 1841 census shows some of the family residing in Woodside and several working in the linen factory. Father John does not appear on this return, nor on the 1851 census.

However there is a death recorded on SP for John Mellis, 16 May 1852 at Aberdour in the "village" but this is not him.

Robert passed away 6 April 1906 in Stoneywood, Newhills and his death certificate lists parents as John Mellis, farm servant and Rachel Mellis, nee Harvey.

Another John Mellis died 1892, single and while he may have been part of the wider family, it is not the correct connection.

If anyone has some information that they could share I would be most appreciative, including whether anyone has Gartly Kirk records about the marriage dates.

Banffshire / Looking for Jane Allan's (nee Rutherford) Burial Place
« on: Monday 03 June 13 06:12 BST (UK)  »
Along with Polymann, we have been looking for the burial place for Jane who passed away 30 May 1861, at Farnaughty, Parish of Enzie. Her husband, James Allan died after the 1851 census, but before the 1861 census, also living in the same area. There is another topic under his name.

We have not been able to locate for sure his death details nor where he is buried. As the 1851 census describes him as "pauper, formerly farm servant" it is quite possible that he at best only had a marked grave stone. Jane remained alive for another 7-9 years, and according to the 1851 census, their daughter Margaret and her son George Mortimer were living with them.

I have not accessed the 1861 census to see what the circumstances were then, not what happened to Margaret or George.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers
Ian

Aberdeenshire / Looking for Margaret Andrew's death, (nee Terral)
« on: Tuesday 21 May 13 06:40 BST (UK)  »
Margaret Terral was born appx 1781, probably in the Kenmay area. She is recorded in the 1841 census as being 60 years old, living "Kirkstyle", Kenmay. She is not listed in the 1851 census.

Her husband George Andrew died 1 December 1862, still living at the same address, and was listed on the 1851. I see that "Kirkstyle" is the name of the longish road, so the actual residence is not given.

I have not been able to find a record on Scotlandspeople of her passing nor where his grave site is, although I suspect Kemnay. As a blacksmith, the family probably had sufficient for fund some sort of gravestone.

Can anyone help?

Thanks
Ian
