The Common Room / BT113 Merchant Seamen record
« on: Thursday 02 August 18 13:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm on the trail of a George Patterson, born 1781 likely in Seaton Sluice, Northumberland.

I think I've got him on various merchant seamen records, notable BT112 (accessed on Findmypast) record number 1892, and also on BT114, which gives me a register ticket number of 113810. Again, it's George Patterson of Seaton Sluice.

But I can't find the full record relating to 113810, which I believe would be in BT113.

Hope I'm getting all that right as I am just learning about these records.

I've trawled through findmypast looking for the record, but alas doesn't seem to be a way to just browse them page by page, and none of the George Patterson's line up.

Would anyone be able to point me toward a source of the record. I can't seem to get on with the national archives search, but suspect that might be my best bet.

Regards

John

Hi,

I'm looking to find a connection to the Tyrrell family of Castlethorpe.

I have a Charles Panter marrying an Elizabeth Swannell on Feb 25th 1762.

They had 20 children, including 5 with a middle name of Tyrrell.

This would seem to imply a connection to the Tyrrell family in an earlier generation, which would be pretty amazing as the family has some famous connections, including a granddaughter of Sir Walter Raleigh buried at Castlethorpe.

But I can't see that connection.

The Tyrell family tree can be pieced together as they crop up in various books, but they seem to fade away around the same time my tree kicks off.

I have an idea that the connection may exist from Joseph Swannell. He was the father of Elizabeth Swannell, and described in his will as a gentleman of Stony Stratford, a stones throw from Castlethorpe.

I've yet to find his birth. He married his wife Mary Chatum in London on June 3 1730, where he was described as "of Newport Pagnell", and where I believe I see a first son born in 1731 - the rest of the children were born in Castlethorpe.

I wonder if his mother was a Tyrell?

Has anyone else being researching any of these folk?

Many thanks,

John

Scotland / Trying to find a Nelson John Hunter, born circa 1853 (Solved)
« on: Saturday 28 March 15 10:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

**** Addendum to my post below - I have just realised that I have a Wilson John Hunter as a son of James. This solves the mystery - it's an error by the newspaper. Wilson became Nelson ****

The Hunter family, headed by James Crombie Hunter, were travelling theatre people, so there are lots of references to them in the papers of the time.

One such story tells of an incident when the theatre burnt down in 1883.

A reference is made to a son of James, who he names as Nelson John Hunter, his "youngest son."

But I have no sight of Nelson on any census record, nor can I find a record of birth or death; his name appears only in the this one newspaper story that I can find. I'm beginning to think he was figment of James' imagination.

The youngest son I do have a record of, is Charles Henry Hunter, born 1854 in Scotland.

I know that James married a Helena Maria Hurst in Glasgow on November 10th 1850, and the 1851 Scotland census, places them (childless at this time) in Glasgow.

So I am reasonably sure that Nelson would have been born in Scotland, sometime between 1851 and 1854.

They are in Northumberland by 1856, going by births of subsequent children.

I have no experience of Scottish records, so if anyone could help track down a birth (or indeed any other record), I'd be most grateful.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Theatre Royal Middlesbrough - when did it open?
« on: Thursday 19 March 15 12:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm working on a great great grand uncle by the name of James Crombie Hunter, who looks to have been the proprietor of the Theatre Royal in Middlesbrough. A number of online sources put 1866 as the date the Theatre Royal started business, but I have found newspaper references to him in 1861 as the proprietor of the Theatre Royal in Middlesbrough. Does anyone have any definitive information as to when the theatre opened?

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Stoke Bruerne parish records prior to 1700
« on: Thursday 11 December 14 15:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

The very comprehensive (hat's off to the transcribers) records for Stoke Bruerne on the Freereg site appear to start  about 1710.

Might anyone know if this is because that's as far back as the written records go, or might the parish records go back further?

Armed Forces / Kings Royal Rifle Corps, have court martial records survived, 1908?
« on: Friday 05 December 14 09:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I've obtained a couple of very intriguing Attestation records for a great grandfather of mine, a Charles Joseph Gosling, born 1889 in North Shields.

Seems he was up to something a bit odd.

On January 8th 1908, he joined the 5th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers.

3 months later, he joined the Kings Royal Rifle Corps, in Winchester.

On the Rifle Corps attestation, there is the following statement.

"Tried by D.C.M (which I take to be District Court Martial) for after having been discharged with disgrace from a part of his majesties forces, enlisting in the regular forces without declaring the criminal (word uncertain) of his discharge and sentenced to 84 days G.H.L (general hard labour?) and to be discharged with ignominy from his majesties service."

So clearly, he had been kicked out of the Northumberland Fusiliers for something, then went to Winchester, joined the Rifles, but then his past caught up with him.

I've corresponded with the Fusiliers museum, and wouldn't you know it, but there is a gap in the records, so they don't have any court martial records from then. I assume one would have taken place.

I've also tracked down the Rifles records to Hampshire record office, but they don't have court martial records.

They've suggested National Archives, but by the looks of things, there is a gap in the records there as well.

Would anyone know if any records might survive somewhere that would tell me what Charles was up to?

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / William Blakeman, born circa 1770 Bridgeford
« on: Wednesday 03 December 14 17:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm looking for any clues to the birth of a William Blakeman, born (as derived from the 1841 and 1851 census records) circa 1770. The 1851 census, at which time he is living in Tynemouth, Northumberland, puts his place of birth as Bridgeford, Staffordshire.

Unfortunately, that could be "Little Bridgeford" or "Great Bridgeford".

I've hunted around, but have not been able to find any record of a birth.

There is a William Blakeman, baptised Swynnerton on 18th Aug 1768, which is within a few miles from the Bridgefords, but there is a William Blakeman who died Swynnerton in 1838, which puts his DOB as 1769, so I'm thinking this accounts for that William of Swynnerton.

Hope someone can help.

John

Canada / James and McLellan family Winipeg, bit stuck, where do I go next?
« on: Thursday 27 November 14 11:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I've got for the first time out many thousands of names in my tree a Canadian connection, a great grand uncle on my wife's side.

So the story starts with Samuel William James (1870-1956), born Leicester, died Winnipeg

He, his Wife, Sarah Ann (Walker) and daughter Edith May James, arrived in Winnipeg in 1910, where they settled.

I have a nice newspaper story I found on his retirement, which talks about his birth in Leicester, his work at Wolverton Rail Works in Buckinghamshire, and then his work in Canada.

I've also just received a copy of his will which gives me the married name of his daughter (she was an only child) and her husband's full name, Richard Catherall McLellan.

There are a few records, marriage, death of Edith in Kelowna popping up on ancestry.co.uk, but nothing for any children of Edith and Richard, I'm assuming because it looks like birth records in Canada are restricted by a 100 year rule.

So I'm not sure where to go next, or if indeed there's much scope left to try and find any children of Edith and Richard.

Might anyone be able to point me, as a newbie to Canadian records, on where to go next?

Regards

John

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Marriage of Arnold Porter and Sarah, circa 1800
« on: Monday 17 November 14 10:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm looking for a marriage between an Arnold Porter and a Sarah, quite likely in Leicestershire, possibly in Leicester city.

Familysearch.org has 5 baptisms attributed to an Arnold and Sarah Porter, all in Leicester, the first few in All Saints, the rest in St Martins. The first baptism, for a Sarah, occurs 3rd June 1801, so I am assuming a marriage circa 1800.

The 1841 census for Sarah, the first child of Arnold and Sarah and then married to a William Crockett, features a Robert Coltman, aged 83, and it has crossed my mind that this might well be Sarah's grandfather, making Arnold's spouse Sarah Coltman.

Freereg, familysearch, ancestry, findmypast, turn up no record of the marriage.

Hope someone can assist.

Many thanks.

John
