London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Florence May Sweet b 1905 in Hendon, Middlesex
« on: Wednesday 26 January 22 21:32 GMT (UK)  »
Don't know how to delete this entry - have found her. She married George White. I am trying to find the whereabouts in the 1939 Register of FLORENCE MAY SWEET born in 1905 to Mark Robert Sweet and wife Eliz Florence Hickman.

She had at least 1 illegitimate child - Florence Rebecca Sweet in 1924 and possibly Gordon C Roy Sweet in 1932. They are both living with their grandparents in 1939. I cannot find their mother.

Any ideas?

Don't know how to delete this entry - have found her. She married George White.
What I have found:
She was born 31 Dec 1904. She appears in 1911 census with father Mark Robert and Elizabeth Florence Sweet. She had an illegitimate daughter, Florence Rebecca Sweet on 27 May 1924. She married George White (from Kent) in Oct 1925. She had at least one child with him: Ronald Walter White in 1935. The 1939 register shows them living in Wembley and he is a groundsman (presumably at Wembley). There are two blacked out entries. In the meantime her illegitimate daughter, 15 yo Florence Rebecca is living/staying with grandparents not far away in Wembley. I have concluded that the child Gordon Sweet (known to family as Roy) born in 1932 was born to Isabella (only sister I think, of Flo May).
The family story tells that Flo May Sweet worked at Buckingham Palace and that her illegitimate daughter is related to a royal. I think this is a joke that has gone awry.
Looking at the photo of her daughter, Flo Rebecca, she does have a queen smile! I have no idea how to get hold of lists of servants in the palace if they exist. I don't know how to attach a photo to this message.

A couple of people have associated her with the Flo M who married Cyril Sweet. It is not she. She was born Abbot.

Cornwall / Charles Hawkey b abt 1821.
« on: Thursday 28 November 19 15:13 GMT (UK)  »
I am searching for the ancestral line of Charles Hawkey born about 1821 probably in Liverpool but I am wondering whether his father, named James in his marriage record, came from the Cornwall Hawkeys?

Charles married Ann Waterhouse in 1838 in Liverpool. They had two boys: John in 1840 and Charles in 1841 both in Liverpool.

I think (though not sure) that this particular family fell apart after the death of head of the household, Charles sr who might have been the death recorded in Liverpool of 1843 (under Haukey). I find the boys in the 1851 census attending an Industrial Poor School in Liverpool both under the name Hanley and with odd ages (probably guessed at) and both separated from each other. No trace of their mother, Ann but I think she might be an emmigrant to US in 1845, without the boys, obviously.

Later the younger boy, Charles, appears in the 1881 census as a servant in Glass House Farm, Wolstanton, Staffs.

I have dismissed a census from 1861 with a widowed fishmonger Ann because of the presence of another very young Charles (7 yo). Surely she would not have given the same name to another child?

Anyway - any help tracing this family to its roots would be very happily received.

Best wishes

Devon / POMEROY family in Stoke Gabriel, Devon
« on: Wednesday 25 April 18 12:20 BST (UK)  »
Is there anyone here who knows about the birth of JOHN POMEROY  abt 1685 probably in Stoke Gabriel or at least Devon?

I have read that is he was a son of Valentine Pomeroy and Lucy (nee Hody).

I can't find a John born to this couple except the one who died in 1681 (a year after their marriage).

I have found a John Pomeroy marrying Mary Narraccot in 1724 in Stoke Gabriel.

Would much appreciate any help. xxx

Rutland / Matthew and Jane TOONE of Cottesmore (death 1719)
« on: Thursday 22 February 18 14:32 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find the marriage record and births to this couple who lived in Cottesmore, Rutland. All I have so far is the death record of Jane Toon who died 19th April 1719 in Cottesmore and the entry states - "Jane wife of Matthew Toon buried "

I know of John and Matthew living in Cottesmore who I presume to be their sons and I presume were born in the late 1600s but I can't find their births.

Has anyone else come across this Jane and Matthew?
Does anyone else know of when the Toons first arrived in Rutland?  (Perhaps from Leicestershire - Ashby de la Zouch?)

Best wishes

Jane had children with Charles Mangham and both lived in Wath u Dearne all their married lives.  I cannot find a marriage record for them nor can I find her maiden name.

Census records state she was born in Thorpe Hesley, nr Wentworth around 1812.  But that is all I can find.  Does anyone else have any info on this woman's identity?  Help much appreciated.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / Tosler, Tusler, Stone in Hull
« on: Tuesday 22 April 14 14:49 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know about the Tusler - Tosler family from Hull?

I have a Sarah and John Tosler who have a child Harriet Tosler 1826 in Hull and later George Tosler is born in 1831 Hull (no birth record for him).

Both children seem to take on the name of Samuel Stone  who I think dies before 1841 - but I think he marries Sarah in Dec 1833 (Sam Stowe abt 1802 in Brid. married to Sarah Tosler b 1807).

I would like to know:
who is the birth father of George Tosler Stone?

I can't find a birth record for George, though there are numerous references in censuses all consistent 1831 birth and at his marriage his father is named as Samuel Stone.

I would also like to know
Who is Harriet's father?   John Tosler is the named father for Harriet b 1826 (George's sister)

Sarah Tosler Harriet's mother (& George's mother) was born in 1807 to John & Suzanna Tusler.  Sarah seems to have the same surname as that of Harriet's father - John Tusler.

Sarah's father was named John and so was her brother born 1810.  I find no marriage for a John and Sarah (except London so am dimissing that one), nor a death of a John Tosler which would leave her free to marry Sam Stone in 1833.

I am thinking the unthinkable and wondering whether the birth of the first daughter, Harriet was from an incestuous relationship with father or brother.  I am also wondering whether George was not the child of Samuel Stone but illegitimate from someone else.

Obviously the paucity of records for this period may be concealing a completely legitimate couple, however, the 1841 and 51 censuses for both Sarah and her brother, John seem to tie in with this scenario and feature the same people with consistent birthdates, names and places of birth.

Has anyone else come across this case or similar?

Lincolnshire / Thomas Cecil Chaplin Toon
« on: Saturday 05 April 14 15:57 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any information about the circumstances surrounding the death of Thomas Cecil Chaplin Toon in 1878 (I think 5th August) when he was "willfully murdered" in Stamford?

I would also like to know about the circumstances of the death of his brother, George Peter Toon who died in the Crown Hotel, Stamford in 1888.

I am interested in any information regarding the Toon family in Stamford.

Thanks - Amanda Stone.

The family settled in Wells next the Sea, Norfolk where children were born and died but it seems they did not originate there.  William might have been born in Norwich in 1696 and died in Wells in 1753.  Does anyone else know about this family?  Does anyone know who Mary was?

Potential gr grandparents 8th removed.

I am searching for the origins of Elizabeth Rogers who married William Sowden in 1792 in N Cockerington.  They are my 5th gr grandparents.  In the marriage record she was noted as being from the parish of N Cockerington and he from Alvingham.  I can't find any birth record or death record for her.

They had 5 children, the last in 1798 after which I think Elizabeth must have died.  In the 1841 and 1851 censuses William is living with his next wife, also Elizabeth, but around 20 years his junior - born in 1795 in Alford.

Does anyone know the origins of the first Elizabeth (nee Rogers)?
Does anyone have information or links to the Sowdens of Alvingham?

Any help much appreciated.
