New Zealand Completed Requests / George Martin Stewart, Police Constable in Hokitika
« on: Thursday 25 January 18 16:11 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks to info supplied to me in my post on Nellie Beaumont (nee Stewart, born 1877) I have more details about Nellie and her sister Miriam Stewart, born 1875.  From Nellie's death certificate it states that her mother was Ann Marsden.  Ann's death is in the newspapers but I cannot find a marriage for George and Ann, a birth for Ann nor a death for George.  Ann died in 1877, so potentially in childbirth, but I cannot find a second marriage for George either.  George's retirement from the Police is also noted in the newspaper in 1909.
Has anyone any more tips please?  Thanks

Limerick / George Martin Stewart/Stuart Born Limerick in the 1830s
« on: Wednesday 24 January 18 16:30 GMT (UK)  »
I found an article in the 'New Zealand Truth' dated 11 Sep 1909 describing a fracas between Arthur and Nellie Beaumont and George and Charles Stuart concerning their sister Maude. George and Charles were my great uncles and Maude my great aunt, all born in Co Cork, emigrating to NZ in the early 1900s.  The paper says that Maude and Nellie were first cousins so their fathers must have been brothers. Nellie was Eleanor/Ellenor/Ellen Ernestine Stewart, daughter of George Martin Stewart, Police Constable and Anne Marsden; Maude was the daughter of William Stuart, born Limerick in 1834, son of George Stuart, husband of Jane Scott and Head Constable in the RIC. I have all the documentation for William Stuart and the three youngest siblings but can anyone help with any info about George Martin Stewart please? There is a Martin Stewart in the RC baptisms for Doon but the family seems to have always been staunch Presbyterian or Church of Ireland.  Thanks

World War One / Abbreviations on Royal Naval records
« on: Tuesday 02 January 18 13:11 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out what the abbreviations on a WW1 Naval record mean and would be grateful for any help.  I know that HMS Vivid was a shore base at Devonport, but the family story is that this chap was a male nurse.  Can anyone tell me what the following stand for:
FE - under the age column; Junior RA and Senior RA -  under the rating column; RL -  under character and ability; to be ?? SRA - under the remarks column.
Many thanks
sorry cannot attach a copy of the record.  I'm told it is too big, very strange

Cork / Maryann Fitzgerald/Crowley, baptised June 1870 St Finbarr's South
« on: Tuesday 19 December 17 13:35 GMT (UK)  »
The baptismal record for Maryann shows her parents as William Crowley and Jane Hosford, but with the surname Fitzgerald.  Jane would have been 45 years old with eight children already.  Did Jane give the child to her daughter, Anne Crowley, married to George H Fitzgerald, to look after or was Maryann Anne's daughter anyway.  Anne and George Fitzgerald had a son, George, in 1875 who was baptised at St Finbarr's South too.  I cannot read what is written in the left hand column of the register and wondered if someone who is more familiar with Catholic records has any ideas.  Many thanks

New Zealand Completed Requests / Eleanor Ernestine Beaumont (nee Stewart)
« on: Tuesday 12 December 17 22:15 GMT (UK)  »
My great aunt Maude Stuart emigrated from Ireland to NZ in 1898 and married Arthur Hill, or Holmes, in 1902.  She died in NZ in 1909.  I have all the relevant certificates for Maude.  In a newspaper article after her death, mention is made of Eleanor Beaumont who was apparently a first cousin of my great aunt.  I can find an entry for the marriage of Arthur Edwin Beaumont and Eleanor Ernestine Stewart in 1897 on the NZ BMD website and various entries on the electoral roll in the Lyttleton and Otago areas, but no further information.  Does anyone have any info about Eleanor - sometimes spelled Ellinor?  If I could trace more about her parents this might lead me to a connection with another branch of the Stuart/Stewart family.  Many thanks.

Midlothian / Burials in Mount Vernon Cemetery Edinburgh
« on: Saturday 19 August 17 17:26 BST (UK)  »
My great aunt was buried in this cemetery in 1945 in a lair held by her son. I found the burial list and register, and the latter shows subsequent burials in 1951, 1973 and ashes in 2004. The names have nothing to do with my family. Is there a system in this cemetery/Scotland generally whereby burials can be made in a lair held by someone else?  Do they have to have permission from the lair holder?  My first cousin once removed died in 1978 in London so would have been alive when two of these burials were carried out.  Any information gratefully received.  Thanks

Cork / Jane Stuart died Corkbeg 1908
« on: Monday 09 January 17 13:51 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandparents, William and Jane Stuart are shown on the 1901 census as living in Corkbeg.  By 1911 William is living with his daughter in Dublin, so Jane died in between.  I recently found a poorly reproduced death announcement in the Dublin Daily Express for 17 April 1908 which appears to be for Jane, giving her maiden name, Scott, and address as Memberton in Corkbeg, verified in Guy's Directory for 1907.  However, despite the excellent website records of irishgenealogy.ie I cannot find a death certificate although i have used every permutation of name and area possible.  Are any records missing from this website (I have emailed but no reply) or do I have to assme that the death was not registered which would be strange as all other family events seem to be recorded. Any help gratefully received, thanks

Cork / Looking for info on Margaret Crowley, born Monsfieldtown 1861
« on: Monday 09 May 16 16:33 BST (UK)  »
I cannot find any definite info on this great aunt, parents William Crowley and Jane Hosford. She was born in Monsfieldtown in September 1861 and baptised at St Luke's Church, Douglas (Church of Ireland) on 21 September. The irishgenealogy.ie website now shows the exact spouse, but by comparing the 58 results to the 1901/11 censuses there is only one entry for a CofI family.  I have just received the certificate and the family is Catholic after all.  The 1901/11 censuses do not show an unmarried Margaret Crowley - she may of course have died or emigrated but the name is too common to be certain that any entries relate to her.  Has anyone any info. or any suggestions for overcoming this brick wall without spending a fortune on certificates!  Many thanks

New Zealand Completed Requests / William Stuart born 1873 in Carrigtwohill, Cork, Ireland
« on: Wednesday 16 December 15 16:17 GMT (UK)  »
This is a long shot. Has anyone been researching and have any info to show that Wm Stuart emigrated to NZ?  According to his brother George (on his attestation papers) William was living in Kilkenny, Ireland, in 1900 but he doesn't appear on the 1901 Ireland census at all and there is only one possible entry on the 1911 census.  As his younger siblings emigrated to NZ I wondered if he did too: Maude born 1876, emigrated 1898, married Arthur Hill in 1902; George, born 1881, emigrated in about 1908, married Eva Martin in 1910, had a daughter Evelyn Maude, born and died 1911, and he died in 1912; Charles, born 1883, emigrated 1903, married Elizabeth McDonald in 1907 and had six children, died 1943 (thanks to Minniehaha for info about him).  All seemed to have lived in Christchurch or immediate vicinity. Hoping someone can help me over this brick wall..... Thanks
