Irish Language / Please help in Translating a possible Gaelic Family Gravestone
« on: Tuesday 13 October 15 07:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I have finally tracked down my Co Clare ancestors' burial site in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, and am amazed at the intricate plaque on it.

It was most likely manufactured by Austin CARLEY, a stonemason in the Geelong area and the brother of the deceased Peter CARLEY.

Can anyone help out here? I suspect it's in Gaelic, and have been unable to get far with translating, though I suspect PHADER AGUS MHARGIE C means Peter and Margaret C (AGUS does mean AND!)

It would appear to contain a prayer that ends in AMEN, but  And the last line of course says 'AD 1884 A CARLEY GEELONG’

Here's a transcription of the full headstone (which is written in English), and I'll attach a picture of the Gaelic plaque

And I quote, exactly as written: 'Callis on the Inside'
Dr Google has not come up with any satisfactory answers, so over to you wonderful RootsChat.Com members!!

Cornwall Lookup Requests / Pelynt Baptisms - John JAGO 1805
« on: Monday 27 July 15 07:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi all!

I am trying to pin down the Baptism of my 4G Grandfather, John JAGO in Pelynt.

There seems to be some confusion as to the correct baptism date, and I can find no source at all for the most common one listed in various family trees!

The Date I am interested in is 28th March 1805, in the Parish   of Pelynt.

It may be of interest to know that he is in the 1841 Census living in St Veep, so he *may* have been born there?

Hope someone can find the the documentary evidence!!

Best Wishes

Gene

Anybody out there like to compare and contrast these signatures??

We are wondering if the James on the left is the same person as the James on the right, and think the signatures are a pretty close match…

Grace BARTLETT, the wife of James#1 disappears from the records after 1767, so there is a possibility that she has indeed died (tho no records have come to light yet!), and that James was then married to Sarah MILLER in 1775…

Over to you!

Devon / The JACKSON Family from Topsham
« on: Wednesday 15 October 14 06:16 BST (UK)  »
Damn Brick Wall with my Devon JACKSONS!

Anybody got a James JACKSON (Merchant) and Sarah (n. MILLER)?The only certified info I have on them is that they were married in Topsham on 2nd January 1775, and they had the following children:

1. Dorothea Burgoyne JACKSON, born Trepassey Newfoundland in 1778, Buried in Topsham 1782.
2. Henry JACKSON, born Topsham July 1779
3. Gregory JACKSON, born Topsham Dec 1780, died in India April 1835.
4. Sarah JACKSON, Christened in Topsham Nov 1782
5. Lucy JACKSON, Christened in Topsham on Nov 1784
6. James JACKSON, christened in Topsham on 5 March 1787, died on 9 May, 1836, in Vittoria, Spain (My ancestor)

James (Number 6 above) married Frances WARD (1796-1872) in Bathampton in Feb 1816.

The children of James and Sarah (n WARD) were:
1. James Henry JACKSON born Oct 1817
2. Frances Rhoda Lucy JACKSON, Baptised Oct 1819, died London in Aug 1900;
3. Mary Ward JACKSON, born Nov 1820 and died March 1823 in Topsham
4. John Baverstock JACKSON, baptised May 1822, on HMS Encounter in Asia, on 17 Nov 1861.
5. William Ward JACKSON, born Topsham, 9 May 1824, died in Melbourne Australia 29 January 1901. (my 2G Grandfather)
6. Sarah Miller JACKSON, born 29 March 1826 in Bath, Somerset

Wish I could trace this JACKSON (James (Merchant) and Sarah (MILLER) family line back further, but they just seem to disappear!

So here’s hoping one of these names will ring a bell with someone!!

All the best

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / johann Friedrich Muller (1792-) ?emigrant
« on: Saturday 04 October 14 03:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi from Sunny Australia!

Can anyone interpret exactly WHAT This chap got up to in 1836?

The attachment is from a Hegnach Wurttemburg FamilienBuch (in GERMAN!), and the entry I'm interested in is on page 67a, under the name of Johann Friedrich Muller, which seems to say he's done something with his family in 1836… possibly moved, but to where??

I can't find a death for him or his wife Catharina Magdalena Fischer anywhere!

Thanks

All the best

Somerset / Samuel WARD 1790-1817 Bath and Brislington
« on: Tuesday 30 September 14 04:24 BST (UK)  »
I have been researching my Samuel WARD family in Bath and Bathampton, who operated barges from Bath to Bristol, around 1780 to 1817.

The second Samuel died and was buried at St James on 2 April 1817. he left quite a detailed will, mentioning his daughters, but he did not mention his only living son, Samuel. This is a bit of a mystery!

I have records of this son Samuel (number 3!) being baptised at St James on 29 April 1790, along with his twin sister Frances.

I also have records of the burial of this Samuel aged 30, again at St James, on the 25 December 1817, fully 6 months after his father's burial.

On the burial record his residence is listed as Brislington, and consulting Professor Google, I find there was an asylum of sorts there…. hmmm?

Can anyone confirm that this was an asylum at the time of Samuel 3's death, and does anyone know if there are patient records available? Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Clare in Sunny Australia!

Somerset / Mary Ward JACKSON Bath St James Baptism 14/3/1821
« on: Wednesday 27 August 14 00:23 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone access the actual parish record? NOT the transcripts as I'm thinking (hoping?) there may be a mis-transcription in this record attached.

The Mary Ward Jackson we already knew about had these details:

Nov ? 1820      - Mary Ward JACKSON was born; Topsham, Devon, England  (2y4m at death in 1823)
07 Dec 1820    - Baptism; Topsham, Devon, England  (CERT dau of James JACKSON & Frances)
Mar 1823        - Mary Ward JACKSON died; Topsham, Devon, England
15 Mar 1823    - Burial; Topsham, Devon, England  (CERT 2y4m)

This 'new' Somerset Mary Ward JACKSON is born around the same time of the Topsham one… but given the dates and names I am wondering if the two Marys are the same and if she got Baptised twice….  (Subsequent siblings are bapt in Topsham)

The Topsham father of Mary Ward JACKSON, James Jackson is also a Royal Marine, who was resident at times in Bath as well as Topsham. His wife was born Frances WARD, dau of Samuel WARD and Mary ASHMEADE.

So just who are the Somerset Francis Jackson and Jane?
Is it ay all possible the transcription could be wrong and it’s meant to be JAMES (not Jane) and FRANCES (not Francis)?

A wild wild card I know, but stranger things have happened!!

Thanks
