Mayo / Martin Boyle b.1917 Kilgarrif, Claremorris
« on: Sunday 17 September 23 11:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks,

I'm looking for anyone that might be connected or have knowledge of a Martin Boyle born 8 June 1917, Kilgarrif, Claremorris.

Parents: Patrick Boyle (1874-1957) and Brigid Flynn (1883-1958).

Siblings: Mary Ann b.1910, Sarah b.1911, Patrick 1913-1987, Luke b.1915 and Brigid b.1920.

Mary Ann emigrated to USA (no info required) and Patrick is buried with his parents in Knock Old Cemetery.

Martin possibly married a Mary E. ??? around 1952 and he appears to have been the informant at his father's death in 1957 in Kilgarrif.

Known to have spent time in the UK and possibly served in the British Army during WW2.

Any info would be welcome.

Michael.

I've had a loupe all over this and I still can't be sure. First line reads 223 Madison St NY but I need help with the numbers on the second address. Both lines are from the same hand.

I can make out the first 4, then not sure about the next two numbers - 3 or 8 followed by 4, 7 or 9?
And then it's a 1 followed by the same number as the first of the unknown from above (e.g. 3 or 8).

It's the address my GG Grandfather James O'Neil gave when witnessing his mother's will. Curiously there is a James O'Neil living at 434 East 13th Street in the city directory for that year and I know it looks like it could be that address, the problem I have interpreting it that way is because of this:

The two possible 3s in the second line don't look like the 3 in the 223 in the first line.
The second 4 does not look like the first which is clearly a 4.

US Lookup Requests / Rutland County, Vermont look up 1822-1828
« on: Wednesday 12 February 20 08:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks, I know that ultimately the answer to this lies at local level so I was wondering if any kind Vermont volunteers with genealogical research connections in other towns/cities in the same county could bounce this around to each other and see if anything turns up?

I'm looking for the birth details of the following:

Norman Ames.
Birth 1825 (give or take about 3 years from my various sources).
Rutland County.

That's as close as I've been able to get. 1850-70 NYC census records say (annoyingly) he was from Vermont, Conn and NY but Rutland County appears in a seaman's protection certificate in NYC in 1858. Seems a bit more specific?

I've got no parents' details - only a 'possible' brother/relation James.

He was in NYC by 1850 working on various steamships as an engineer.

US Lookup Requests / Grand Army of the Republic Records Ohio
« on: Monday 24 June 19 13:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks,

I'm trying to find out about the Civil War service of a Patrick F. O’Neil. He was born 28 Jan 1844 in Ireland and he died 17 Jun 1918 in Akron, Ohio. He lived in New York City prior to moving to Akron in 1880 so I suspect his service would have a New York connection. I've checked all the military files on Ancestry and Fold3.

His obit states: "When the Civil War broke out he and two brothers enlisted. The other two boys were killed during the great struggle but Patrick O'Neil fought all the way through, serving most of the time under General Thomas, and taking part in the battles around Nashville and the campaigns west of the mountains."

To me that seems to imply that the branch of service was the army?

He's buried at St Vincent's in Akron and the cemetery inscriptions info from there says US veteran marker is present but there's no more info. Someone suggested this might refer to a GAR marker but I can't find out anymore. I have an image of his headstone and there's nothing there either.

At Ancestry in the Ohio, Soldier Grave Registrations, 1804-1958 it says F. Company, St Vincent's Roster so I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any Ohio GAR records that might contain more info. I don't see anything here http://www.garrecords.org/.

Can anyone help me out with this?

United States of America / Where did this Dickerson family go?
« on: Thursday 18 April 19 13:14 BST (UK)  »
The following arrived in New York from Liverpool 6 June 1836 on board the St. Mark. I’ve found the children’s baptismal records at a church in Bradfield, Yorkshire to parents Isaac and Sarah and mostly it’s the correct years of birth give or take a few. I’m sure Sarah’s year of birth is wrong in the manifest and she is the mother as she’s only 9 years older than the eldest child. However I can’t find any further evidence for them in the USA/Canada afterwards. Most strange given the names Isaac and Benjamin would help narrow things down?

Isaac Dickerson, b1793
Sarah Dickerson, b1807
Mary Dickerson, b1816
Elizabeth Dickerson, b1820
Benjamin Dickerson, b1818
John Dickerson, b1822
William Dickerson, b1824
George Dickerson, b1826
Henry Dickerson, b1830
Isaac Dickerson, b1833

Any ideas welcome.

England / Double birth entry Gerard Benbow Liverpool?
« on: Thursday 31 January 19 08:58 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone offer any suggestions with this...

Gerard Benbow was my grandfather's half brother. We know he was born in Liverpool and some of my aunt's still remember him - they say he was born in 1925. His mother's maiden name was McArdle.

There are 2 handwritten entries at the bottom of the page for JAS quarter, 1925, p82:

Benbow Gerard, McArdle, Liverpool S., 8B See D39 (all crossed out)
Benbow Gerard, McArdle, Liverpool S., 8B see P39
I've included the image as it's difficult to be sure with the volume and page info for the 2nd entry

However typed up in the OND quarter, 1939, p63 is the following:
Benbow Gerard, McArdle, Liverpool S., 8B 360
Again I've included an image.

Now I appreciate the 1939 entry might be for someone else but the name, mother's maiden name and location seem too much of a coincidence. Could the birth have not been recorded in 1925 and then for some reason done in 1939 with a back entry to 1925?

Ideas welcome.

Michael.

US Completed Requests / Hannah Angela Ames birth 1853-ish NYC CLOSED

Does anyone know if I can get any more info from it - e.g. child's sex or name? Seems to be the only candidate that comes close to what I'm after.

Hi folks,

I originally asked this about 4 years ago but I was wondering if anyone else could come up with some fresh ideas.

A odd one this which I thought would be a walk in the park to solve.

I have a family plot at Calvary Cemetery (Woodside NYC). Nineteen burials in 3 graves. All bar one of the burials are family members, in-laws, etc. Family names are Good, Dickers, Carroll, Ames, O'Neil and Beechinor. A couple of variants of spellings but I know exactly how they are all related. The burials start from when the plot was purchased 4-8-1869 and go up to 2-23-1924.

The exception is Frederick Daughy, buried 9-7-1881, age 8, born New York. This is how Calvary have the name spelt and from the date he can't be a leftover from an earlier burial/plot.

Except I have no idea who he was, what the relationship is, nor can I find either a birth or death record and no census listing for 1880.

Most strange?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Print signatures
« on: Wednesday 12 September 18 09:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks - not exactly genealogy but someone I know was given 4 or 5 old etchings by what looks to be 2 different artists.

A couple of the etchings are clearly by an artist called E. Mary Shelley and are dated 1920. I've had no problem finding other works by her.

However on the remaining etchings I can't make out the signatures which are quite faint so I've attached 2 images here, one of which I've adjusted as far as I dare.

I see what looks to be Mary H Lee but I'd like other opinions.
