Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Grandma Lookup please
« on: Wednesday 18 September 13 10:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi.  I live in Leyland, Lancashire and whilst most of my research I am able to do myself, I am stuck on one aspect in particular and was wondering if anyone could help?

I am trying to locate some information on Ada Lindley who is my grandmother.  No one in the family seems to know much about her.  We know she was the mother of my father Ernest William Lindley who was born at 45 Bridge Street, Langley Mill on the 4th August 1895 to one Ada Lindley who was a Domestic Servant.  How old she was and where she came from no one knows and that is what I am trying to find out.

The only information I have, apart from the above, is in 1895 she was alleged to be living in New Row, Carlton, Nottinghamshire.  No house number is known I'm afraid.  I've checked the 1891 and the 1901 Census but I couldn't see her anywhere.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Warmest Regards

Sharon

Library and FHS Lookups / Who's my granddads mum?
« on: Wednesday 11 September 13 13:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I'm looking for the mother of my grandad.  My mum told me her father was found on a doorstep and wanted to know the circumstances behind it.  I also need to knew who my granddads mother was and where she came from.

I was given a few names from the past she remember, like he was born in Langley Mill, Nottingham.  He was adopted by a Mr & Mrs Topping and there was a picture on the wall when she was growing up of someone called Ada.  Some of her brothers said she was an aunt and some said she was a grandma but none knew for sure.

I started by sending away for his birth certificate.  The name Ada was there under Maiden name of mother.  That was the easy bit.  The Ada in the photo was my mothers grandma.  I then found a Mr & Mrs Topping in the Census and after a little investigation found that Mrs Topping had adopted a young buy of about 5 years old when she was single.  She then went on to marry a Mr Topping.  Mr Topping had put his name down as Father on my grandads marriage certificate.  No matter how hard a tried I could not find out where Ada had come from though.  Was she born in Nottingham where my grandad had lived during his life or was she from somewhere else?

The information I have from the birth certificate is as follows:

Name & where born - Ernest William Lindley / Fourth August 1895, 45 Bridge Street, Langley Mill.
Name and Profession of mother - Ada Lindley / Domestic Servant.
Signature, description & residence of Informant - Ada Lindley / New Row, Carlton, Nottingham, as per declaration dated 2nd September 1895.
When Registered - Third September 1895.
The Certificate has Registration District - Basford, 1895 Birth in the Sub District of Ilkeston, in the Counties of Derby & Nottingham at the top of the certificate.

Any help on who the mother was and came from would be gratefully received as I'm running out of ideas.

Library and FHS Lookups / Kew lookup please
« on: Tuesday 13 August 13 16:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi.  I'm trying to find some information about one of my uncles.  His name was William Ernest Lindley and he fought in WWII.  Could anyone take a look, the next time you're  at KEW, and see if they can find me any information on what he received his honour or award for please?

We always thought that he joined the 8th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment and served in Burma and so I wrote to The Keep Museum and got a bit of information from them.  They informed me that the 8th Battalion was a home based training company in World War 2 and as far as they were aware, the 8th did not see active service overseas it was the 2nd Battalion.  They then did some checks for me and "he did not appear in their enlistment records so did not enlist before the outbreak of war", which would be right as he joined in January 1940.  He hadn't transfered  to another Regiment as he was not in their transfer records but that didn't mean that he hadn't transfered to another Battalion within the Regiment.  They then checked their Accessions Database and they found him on a list of names of men who gained Honours or Awards with the said 2nd Battalion, The Devonshire Regiment, however he did not appear in their Regimental History.  They then informed me that a visit to the National Archives at Kew would be necessary to find out extra information.

And so here I am, asking if someone would perhaps look into this a bit more for me.  I'm unable to get there as I'm disabled and have no way of getting there plus I don't live anywhere near it.  Not that that would stop me if I'd been fit but these pins don't carry me the same these days.  I think I've found his Service Number which is 5624650.  We know he was a Lance Corporal and in the Forces War Records website they have him down as being a Corporal.  I also know that he was Mentioned in Dispatches dated 19/07/1945, page 3749  - http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/37184/supplements/3749 .  What I'd like to know is what is in the official report written by his Superior Officer and sent to the high command?  Apparently this describes what his gallant or meritorious action in the face of the enemy was.

Any help would be gratefully received and if the report could be found I'd like a copy if possible.  All expenses would be gladly paid for any copies of any paperwork and for you to send them to me.  I leave it in your hands.

Thank you in advance

Sharon

World War Two / 8th Devons - WWII
« on: Sunday 04 August 13 15:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi.  I'm looking for any information on William Ernest Lindley who was with the 8th Devons, during WWII, or any information regarding the 8th Devons and their days in Burma.  Can anyone help please?  I keep coming up against brick walls.

He had a recommendation for gallantry in the face of the enemy put forward and I know there was an official report, written by a Superior Officer, which was sent to the high command.  Where would I be likely to find this report?  I've looked on the Archives but I'm unable to locate it.  I've found his name in the Dispatches though.  Could anybody help please as I'm going around in circles and keep hitting dead ends? ???

The man in question is my uncle but he died many moons back so I'm unable to ask him.  I believe he used to be a stretched bearer.

Census and Resource Discussion / What is the best?
« on: Wednesday 06 February 13 15:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi.  I'm pretty new to this so any help would be much appreciated.  I'm currently researching both my mothers and fathers relatives and I have them at different stages in time so this question reflects this.

I know the Census starts at 1911 and then goes into the 1800's but would would I need to look at when the Census runs out?  So from 1911 I'd need to refer to?  a ???nd from the 1700's I'd need to look at?  Also where can these records be found please?
