Australia / Victorian birth registration 1888
« on: Saturday 05 October 13 02:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi
In 1888 my husband's grandfather's birth was registered with the name of 'his' father. Then, once they realised the father had been dead for eight years, he was re-registered with his mother's maiden name only. Both registrations exist and they both have the same number with a 'r' after it.
I have a copy of the one without a father.
Does anyone know if there is a second (older) version under the 'father's' name or will they simply send me the updated version if I order it.
Many thanks
Angela

Staffordshire / TYRIE family
« on: Monday 26 August 13 03:39 BST (UK)  »
For some time between 1867 and 1873 my TYRIE family left their home in Bermondsey and lived at Fancy Walk in Stone. Alexander TYRIE was a cooper and his son (also Alexander TYRIE) was an apprentice cooper.
Would anyone have any ideas as to why a cooper would relocate to Stone for a period of no more than 6 years. Would there have been a been a sudden demand for coopers? Why?
His father and his brother were involved with naval coopering but he does not seem to have been.
Any suggestions will be gratefully received.
Best wishes

London and Middlesex / Wards or areas in London
« on: Friday 16 August 13 02:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have ancestors who lived in Grub Street (now Milton Street), Red Cross Street, London Wall, Fore Street around what is now the Barbicon.
It is easy to find these streets on a map (Rocque 1746) but I do not know where to go to look for the ward or suburb or whatever. How do I find out if it is Bethnal Green, Tower Hamlets or somewhere else. Rocque has dotted lines around numbered areas which I think may indicate wards but the code has been cropped off.
I expect ward boundaries changed often but it is hard to tell someone what area your ancestors came from if you only know the street names.
Any help will be gratefully received
Best wishes

Devon / What do you think about William Taylor. I need your advice.
« on: Wednesday 03 July 13 03:51 BST (UK)  »
Looking on Familysearch.org I have found a Willyam TAYLOR of the expected age being born in Broad Clyst Devon and christened on 19th March 1657. However, it seems unlikely that he is my ancestor as the entry says that he died on 23rd January 1659!
There are several public family trees on Ancestry which have a William TAYLOR being born in Heavitree and christened on 19 March 1657. However, I have not found any primary source document for this.
Is this too much of a coincidence?
Mine appears to move between the two villages in the early years of his life and then remains at Broad Clyst after his second marriage.
The problem is that I can't ignore it as the two Williams have different fathers.
Any thoughts on this would be received with gratitude.
Best wishes

Dorset Lookup Requests / WARREN alias SIDLINGE
« on: Monday 17 June 13 05:25 BST (UK)  »
In researching my family tree I have come across the surname 'WARREN alias SIDLINGE'(various spellings) in Marnhull, Dorset around 1600. I have also noticed that there is a village called Sydling in Dorset. Is it likely that the family who had the alias came from Sydling originally and adopted 'WARREN"  when they settled in Marnhull?
Thanks

Dorset / Edeth WARREN who married Richard TAYLOR
« on: Monday 17 June 13 05:06 BST (UK)  »
My TAYLOR family come from Devon (North Tawton, Broad Clyst) but, according to another researcher, around 1680 Richard TAYLOR married a lady called Edeth WARREN. The only Edeth WARREN I have found of the correct age is the daughter of Nicholas WARREN and Susannah DAVIDGE of Marnhull, Dorset. Does anyone on this list have this Edeth in their ancestry and can help me work out if she is the person I am looking for?
Best wishes

Hi
I am following the trail of Mahala BANKS who married Edmund Charles CLARK. They came to Victoria on the Maldon in 1857. Their daughter Mahala CLARK married William HALL in 1870 and they had several children. Unfortunately, after his death she had several more and my husband is descended from one of these later conceptions. She later married henry Hodgson and died in 1934 in the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum.
I would love to be able to fill in some more details of her life story and, of course, a photo would be wonderful.
