Midlothian / Grandfather's Birth/Baptism 1912ish - McCabe/Thomson
« on: Wednesday 15 October 14 14:37 BST (UK)  »
This is my last ditch attempt for any help anyone may be good enough to offer.

I have searched in vain for years to find my Grandfather's birth record. My father is now very ill and I am desperate to be able to close this mystery.

Grandad, Robert McCabe, joined the Royal Scots Greys in 1928 though said after he had 'fudged his dates' to be able to enlist.
He married in 1938, listing Hugh McCabe as father (Hugh died in 1908) and Mary Thomson as mother. He listed his age as 28.
He passed in 1982, aged 70, with Hugh and Mary as parents.

Everything points to his year of birth as 1910, though if this is true, Hugh could not be his father as he passed in 1908. I have no idea if he knew his 'true' parentage.

He apparently mentioned that he was born in the Fountainbridge area. In 1911, I have his mother and siblings living in The Pleasance (Newington district). His maternal grandparents lived after in Fountainbridge where they died in the 1920s.

I am at a complete loss of where else to go with my search. I have looked at all Robert McCabes and Robert Thomsons (putative mother's maiden name) born between 1910-1914 with no bells being rung.

Please please can anyone help? Is there anywhere I could search? Baptism records anywhere? His birthday was always celebrated on April 28th.

Thank you in advance.

Lancashire / ROF Kirkby - Munitions Factory
« on: Wednesday 20 August 14 12:29 BST (UK)  »
My Great-Grandparents worked in the Munitions Factory in Kirkby, according to my grandmother who was left home alone at night while they worked.

That's as much as I know about their service though, can anyone point me to records/information? I haven't been able to find much.

Thanks

Lancashire / Sir Samuel Brighouse's Coroner Reports?
« on: Wednesday 13 February 13 20:34 GMT (UK)  »
Sir Samuel Brighouse was a popular coroner from 1880-something to 1940, reported to have overseen 25,000 cases.

It seems one of his cases was that of my great-great aunt. Although the newspaper reports go into quite a bit of detail, I was wondering whether it was possible to actually read his casefiles? They'd be an interesting read, if not only for the family history.

Thanks

Midlothian / Photograph: Edinburgh School Group, circa 1917ish?
« on: Sunday 10 February 13 22:48 GMT (UK)  »
(Apologies if this is in the wrong sub-category. Feel free to move the post, but seeing as I am able to narrow to city and an 30yr period, seemed more accurate here. Your call. :) )

I have the attached photographs in the disappointingly small pile for my paternal lineage. For me, it is a school with teachers/helpers and a selection of children. Two of the ladies in the picture seem to also be in the second picture attached which includes my great-aunt, Maggie (bottom right). Said great-aunt lived 1897-1931. As I don't recognise the other ladies, and how they seem to wearing the same clothes as in the other photo, I'm wondering if this is a school photograph and so thought I would open it up in case anyone recognised their relatives.

Maggie was most likely living around the St.Leonards Parish District at this time (I surmise late teens/early twenties). Anyone?

Midlothian / Brewery Explosion 1908?
« on: Saturday 09 February 13 13:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Research has told me my great-grandfather had a horrific death in Dec 1908. An inquiry deemed the death to have been caused by 'an explosion of dust in a brewery', with my ggf dying six days later in Edinburgh Infirmary from his injuries.

I cannot find any records of any kind of explosion in any brewery! Anyone know of any? Does any know of which brewery he may have worked in (Long shot)? He was living in Buccleuch St with wife and three surviving children at the time.

Thanks in advance.
