Hi folks

I am interested in the actual process of colourisation but not an expert in this unfortunately, but I guess this photo was taken at a special occasion so the colouring of suits and flowers would be straightforward guess work rather than a random photo

Hope someone can have a crack at this

Also interested in what package/process would be best to use for colourisation if anyone wants to share their technique

Apologies for the quality of the photo it's the best one out there on the internet unfortunately but I have increased the size the best I could

Hi all. I have been having a go with this one but I fear it may be beyond my own skill although just messing with contrast and brightness it does actually give me hope that something may be done with this.

Pretty sure it's from the UK somewhere and obviously a mining scene but dating isn't my forte unfortunately. I will see if I can narrow down the time frame and a bit more info as to who these guys are from the relative that gave me this the other day. This was sent to me via a mobile phone so I presume that the megapixel count is quite high. I do have a TIF version of this (6 meg) but i'm cautious of the file size limits on roots chat.

I wouldn't have posted this anywhere else as from past history of my activity here I know that this is where the real restoration experts are so I hope someone can help with this

Armed Forces / Army, or Navy ? I'm confused
« on: Thursday 07 November 13 22:07 GMT (UK)  »
I hope someone can help on this board, i usually frequent the local genealogy board, and this is the first time i have posted regarding anything related to military matters.

The chap on the attachment is Samuel Dagnall born in Wigan in 1911, and died in Wigan 1967.

He was my grandfather, although we never met as he died before i was born. My family have no records of his military service, and this is the only known photo of him. My family have always been under the impression that he was in the army, and just accepted that this was the case, and that is as much as they know.

As is sometimes the case in genealogy, 46 years after his death, things don't seem as clear cut, as once i have started to look into his service i can't seem to find his name listed under any army records, but i did find references to 'a' Samuel Dagnall in the Navy archive.

I have no idea of the dates he served from, and to, although the uniform he has on in the photo doesn't look like a Navy uniform to me even though no insignia is visible.

Any ideas anyone ?

The more i come across photo's like this the more i wonder how photo's get in this state in the first place...

If anyone can do something with this i would be eternally grateful...,then i think the next stage is to get this over to the military historians to shed more light on it, as there seems to be a 5 digit number on the back 45565 ??? Service number from the late 20's or early 30's maybe, but i'm no expert.

I hope someone can do something with this, as this is the only known photo of this chap

Good luck

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / heres a restoration challenge
« on: Saturday 19 October 13 23:24 BST (UK)  »
Apologies for the poor quality of this.

For a bit of background, the chap on the right is my late father, taken in around 1952. He is from the long line of Dagnall's who in times gone by were importers of ivory, mother of peral, and tortoiseshell from the furthest corners of the new world, in order to craft ornate combs to hold together the intricate hairstyles of the wealthy ladies of the day.

The comb making business was extensive to the family throughout the 19th and 18th centuries in Windle, Parr, Eccleston, Prescott, and Liverpool in Lancashire.

Richard Dagnall was made a freeman of Liverpool for his master craftsman skills in 1701, and Henry Dagnall used his wealth to open the first coalmine in Windle (St.Helens).

I have attached the damaged photo as a 400k jpeg, as this is the file upload limit, but i also have a 35 meg TIFF photo for anyone who needs it via email.

Best of luck to anyone with better skill than i

Here is one that has always eluded me, with the Rose/Clayton family, circa 1941

Lancashire / Valentine Walls (Blackrod/Aspull/Wigan) where did you come from ?
« on: Tuesday 12 February 13 22:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks, apologies as i am a new user, but this is driving me nuts....

I have been researching the Walls family in the Blackrod/Aspull/Wigan area, and have hit a major brick wall with Valentine Whall (walls) b abt 1700, d 1774 and his brother Robert Whall (Walls) b abt 1710 d 1774.

I have traced 90% of the family from 1700 to the present day, as well as others in Australia (NSW), and Durham (UK) (so if anyone needs some assistance with their own research then i am only too glad to help.

Valentine and Robert are the earliest members found, but there the trail grows cold. I have no birth records (even though both are mentioned in the Blackrod St.Katherines register, one of the oldest registers in the region)

But no christening/baptism record for either brother....So as far as i can tell they weren't from Wigan/Aspull/Blackrod originally.

Has anyone else on roots chat been researching a Whall/Walls/Wolles/ line somewhere else in the region that may help with this, as i have spent the last 3 years just on this one question

If i have to go through DNA testing comparison to other Walls lines, then so be it

Hope someone can help, or point me in the right direction
