Family History Beginners Board / William Fearn Derbyshire
« on: Sunday 10 February 19 05:30 GMT (UK)  »
I’ve been unable to reliably trace the Fearn family back further than William Fearn born 1800 in Derbyshire and died 1874 Brassington, Derbyshire. Married Sarah Baseley in 1817 in Carsington and they had a son, Joseph, in 1820. As Sarah was aged 42 by then, it’s possible that she was a widow. I’ve been unable find their 1841 census record. Any suggestions on where to look would be very much appreciated.

Scotland / McPherson/Mcculloch Scotland
« on: Sunday 22 April 18 06:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi there, I’m trying to locate a connection between a McPherson and a McCulloch which I suspect is by marriage (the wife being the McCulloch) in Scotland in the 1700’s. The name McCulloch is frequently a middle name through the female line in this family and this usually indicates that it was a maiden name of a direct ancestor. However, I can’t find anything beyond Katherine McPherson and Daniel McPherson who married in Dunbartonshire in 1792 and named their daughter Agnes McCulloch McPherson born 1806 in Glasgow which is where I think the tradition started and then continued on.  I can’t confirm anything prior to this marriage for sure. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / Samson or Sampson Milsom Bath, Somerset 1816-1879
« on: Sunday 18 February 18 10:17 GMT (UK)  »
Although Samson Milsom appears to be an unusual name, I’m having trouble identifying his parents. The marriage record shows his father as Isaac, but family trees on Ancestry all say Joseph Milsom amd Catherine Yealf. Then it comes to his wife, Elizabeth Wilson, who was either born in Bath or Newfoundland depending on which census you want to believe. It would be great if someone could throw some light on this for me. Many thanks.

The Common Room / Pharoah Singh
« on: Wednesday 25 January 17 10:13 GMT (UK)  »
I can find a marriage to my grandmother, Hannah Clara Mendenhall, in England  and his death, but no record of his birth in about 1890, passenger lists or any census records or any other records at all. Pharoah's father is listed as Baru Singh. Perhaps Pharoah was born in India? Wouldn't there be a record of his arrival in the U.K somewhere though? Does anyone know how to research Indian record? Many thanks for your help.

The Common Room / Anthony Carroll and Honora Dooling
« on: Monday 23 January 17 09:54 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out a bit more about Mary Carroll the daughter of Anthony Carroll and Honora Dooling who I believe were from Ireland and migrated to Victoria, Australia in the mid 1800's. Mary married Patrick Quinn in Victoria in 1869 but prior to that, I can't find any information about her. Family legend is that the family were from County Wicklow but I can't find any evidence to support that. Honora Carroll died in Victoria but there is no record of Anthony. Many thanks for your help

Down / McGinty/McGanty family
« on: Sunday 16 October 16 03:38 BST (UK)  »
James McGinty or McGanty was born in Downpatrick circa 1824 and moved with his wife, Jane born circa 1820 Downpatrick, and children to Lancashire some time between 1858 and 1871. Is there any way I can find out more about the family in Ireland and the ship they sailed on to England's? Many thanks.

Lancashire / WW2 commendations Liverpool
« on: Sunday 16 October 16 03:27 BST (UK)  »
Henry (Harry) Spencer worked for the Liverpool Gas Works and received a commendation in WW2 for brave conduct in civil defence which is mentioned in the Liverpool Daily Post 25th Jan 1941. Family stories say that he removed an unexploded bomb from a gas tank in the street and saved the whole street from being destroyed, although this seems unlikely. Is there anywhere that I can find out what he actually did do to receive the commendation? Many thanks.
