Aberdeenshire / Ann SMITH adopted daughter
« on: Sunday 25 January 15 00:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on tracking down Ann SMITH. In researching my SCOTT family I was looking at the 1901 Scotland Census and in addition the James SCOTT and his wife Louisa and their 5 children there was an Ann S SCOTT - adopted daur -age: 3 mos born in Aberdeen and then in the 1911 Scotland Census with James SCOTT and family she is listed as Annie SMITH - Niece age 9 born in Aberdeen.
I cannot find her birth record, I have looked at Scotlands People and have looked at some of what I felt were the most likely records and found nothing familiar and I have run out of credits. LOL I checked Family Search and found nothing. Ancestry can't find anything matching this information.
Would there be any other places I could look? Something I missed? I have also looked for her as Ann SCOTT and Ann MILNE(Louisa's maiden name) Again I have checked some of what I felt were likely but will need tons of credits to check them all. LOL  I am curious as to if she is actually related or if they may have taken in a child of a friend, also to find out what might have become of her.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Kim

Aberdeenshire / Rachel PATERSON/ Barbara IRONSIDE
« on: Monday 24 February 14 03:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had an information or suggestions as to where I can go from here in my search. I have been researching my SCOTT family tree and traced it back to John SCOTT who married Rachel Paterson in 1850. It is shown in Scotland's People in the King Edward Parish on June 2, 1850 and the New Deer Parish on June 13, 1850.  In the census of 1851, 1861 it shows her birthplace as New Deer. On Rachel's death cert. it shows her parents as ----PATERSON (refuted/reputed father) and Barbara IRONSIDE (domestic servant). I have gone back and searched for her birth and can find nothing. According to her death cert she would have been born in 1825 and I have widened my search from 1820-1830. There are 5 Rachel Paterson born in that time, none with the mother as a Barbara and none in Aberdeenshire. I also tried Rachel Ironside and there are none from 1820-1830.

I also have gone through freecen and freereg and familysearch. Turned up nothing. Any ideas??? Anyone else researching this line??

England / Please help me find Catherine Coghlan
« on: Wednesday 24 April 13 23:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, I have hit one of those brick walls everyone is talking about. LOL

I am looking for more info on Catherine Coghlan, born about 1863 in Ireland (all that was available). I know she married Mark Buttle in Chelsea St Luke in England in 1884. The marriage certificate shows her age to be 22 and her father is shown as James Coghlan, deceased, occupation was a cooper. I have looked for her birth info and nothing seems to match up. After her marriage the 1891 Census shows her birthplace as Ireland and the 1901 Census shows birthplace as Hackney, London England. There are three birth records that show a father James Coghlan. One mother is Elizabeth Osborne and birth year was June 1867, the other was Mary Staunton and birth year Sept 1867 and third Mary Bernard with birth year Sept. 1868. All three are Ireland no England birth listing that I can find.
I am not sure of any siblings that I can cross reference to. Would the marriage cert show more info if I order it? I have looked for the death certificate but can't find anything that matches either.  As far as living family they know nothing of her immigrating anywhere and nothing of her visiting Canada to visit her children here.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kim

England / Records search
« on: Friday 05 April 13 23:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone.

I am wondering if there is an England version of Scotlands People??  I have Ancestry and most of the searching for the English side of my family leads me to the various BMD indexes.  Is there anything like with Scotlands People that you can pay-per=view or get a subscription and actually see the record with all the info on it like who the parents were on the birth record and the actual DOB?? Or am I going to have to use the indexes to order copies from the archives?? Am I missing something or does everyone just piece everything together just using the indexes??

Thanks,

Kim

Completed Census Requests / Occupation question
« on: Friday 05 April 13 01:01 BST (UK)  »
I have been going through the 1891 census on Ancestry and came across one with my Great-Great Grandfather James Scott (birth abt 1856).  His occupation is listed as "Lordyman".  I have not seen this occupation anywhere else and tried the link someone had on another board about occupations but this was not listed there. Does it mean what I think???..would he have been the landlord and owned the property?  As of his marriage in 1879 he was listed as a farm servant. I wouldn't think he would have managed that jump in station so quickly.  The address shown is 2 Rose Lane, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire.
