Ayrshire / Marion Woodburn - b. Ayr, Scotland, possibly 1819
« on: Tuesday 06 January 15 01:04 GMT (UK)  »
I’m seeking confirmation on early life of my ancestor Marion Woodburn, who died New Zealand 1908. Death certificate shows she was 92, born Scotland, father’s surname Woodburn (a weaver), mother’s name unknown. Have found birth record showing Marion Woodburn born 3 Oct 1819 West Kilbride, Ayr to parents John Woodburn and Mary Brown. Also marriage record for parents 20 Jun 1818, Kilmaurs, Ayr. Was wondering can I be sure I have the right parents for Marion? Have read many old records have been lost. Can’t find more births for parents John Woodburn/Mary Brown. Also can't find census record for them. Don’t know what became of them after Marion born. Have 1841 census for a Marion Woodburn, aged 20, female servant, living in household Grange Street, Kilmarnock with two other Woodburns named Jessie aged 30 and Willie aged 25 (both females) but can’t be sure this is correct Marion or who Jessie and Willie were. Do have Marion’s marriage record. She married Thomas McCulloch, Kilmarnock, Ayr on 16 Dec 1845. They migrated to Australia 1848 on Mahomed Shah along with daughter Mary (born 1843 – no birth record for her).

New Zealand Completed Requests / John Woodburn McEwin born 1858 Matakana Auckland
« on: Saturday 17 August 13 23:33 BST (UK)  »
I am seeking information on John Woodburn McEwin. He was the brother of my great-grandfather James McEwin. James married in Reefton, West Coast in 1878 and witness to the marriage was John McEwin, Miner, Reefton. This conflicts with other info I have that John lived in Auckland at this time. Does anyone know if he was ever in the Reefton area, and if so when.

Devon / Henry Terrell Hodge and Sarah Ann Pugsley born Harberton
« on: Tuesday 07 May 13 04:48 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information on my great-great grandparents Henry Terrell Hodge and Sarah Ann Pugsley who married in Devon in 1856. Henry was born 1828 and Sarah 1837. I have searched the 1841 census and found a family of Pugsleys in Harberton (father Thomas, mother Ann) which I think is Sarah’s family; however I have nothing on Henry’s family. Henry died in Plymouth in 1885. I cannot find a death record for Sarah but found an 1891 census record – it showed she lived at Woolster St, Plymouth with her son.

I would welcome information on their birth families and also on Sarah's death.

Devon / Elizabeth Ann HODGE b. 1857 Cheriton and John Howard b. 1842
« on: Monday 18 March 13 03:57 GMT (UK)  »
I am seeking information on Elizabeth Ann Hodge and John Howard who married in Plymouth in 1882. Their son John Henry Howard (my grandfather) was born in Woolwich, London in 1883. Their next child Patrick Charles Howard was born in 1884, also in Woolwich. John and Elizabeth immigrated with their sons to Queensland, Australia in 1885 on the Duke of Buccleuch. Five more children were born in Australia. John died in Brisbane, Queensland on 30 Aug 1918. His death record shows that he was 76 years and gives the additional information that he was born in Ireland and his parents were Patrick and Winifred. Elizabeth Ann Howard lived until 19 May 1949. Elizabeth’s parents were Henry Terrell Hodge and Sarah Ann Pugsley who married in Totnes, Devonshire in 1856. I would like to know especially about John Howard’s background. I cannot find him on any England or Ireland records so can’t confirm the details on his death record. The Duke of Buccleuch passenger records show him as Sergeant J Howard – I don’t know whether that means he was an army or police sergeant. To confuse things even more, the Queensland electoral rolls give his occupation as “tailor”. Does anyone know about this family?

I am seeking information on William Griffiths and Sarah Edwards who married in Wales in 1844 and in 1853 immigrated to Victoria, Australia along with their two children John and Maria. In Victoria they had another three children - Mary Elizabeth, Thomas and Sarah Ann. They later moved to New Zealand where their daughter Mary Elizabeth Griffiths (my great-grandmother) married James McEwin in Reefton in Aug 1878. Sarah died in 1892. Her funeral notice shows that she was buried in the Reefton Cemetery on 28 Jan 1892. I have no information however about the death of William. Does anyone have information on this? The words of Sarah’s funeral notice indicate that William was still alive at the time of his wife’s death. I am also seeking information on their children John, Maria and Thomas Griffiths. I am unsure what course their lives took and would welcome any information. I know a little about the youngest child Sarah Ann Griffiths - she married William Goodyer in New Zealand in 1879.
