Europe / Should I give up hope?
« on: Sunday 29 June 14 03:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've been researching my German ancestry for a while now and have managed to get over some really frustrating road blocks, but I think I might be stumped on this one. My ancestor Margarethe Philippine Morell was born in May 1796 and was married to David Berlepsch in December 1823 in Eschwege. On her marriage certificate it states that her father was Wilhelm Morell and her mother was Anna Christine Fulling. Her marriage certificate also states that  she was born in Friedrichsdorf and that her father was a farmer, also from Friedrichsdorf, who was already deceased. I wrote to the archive at Friedrichsdorf, but, they had no record of Margarethe. Nor did they have any records of her parents. They told me that a Morell family had lived in Friedrichsdorf, but, according to their records the family had moved to Bad Homburg in the mid 18th Century. So, I wrote to the archive at Bad Homburg, but, again they couldn't find any trace of them.

So, I'm really quite stuck on whether I'll ever be able to proceed here. The only other thing I can think of is to return to the archives at Eschwege  on the off the chance that they really came from there. But, the marriage certificate states they came Friedrichsdorf most explicitly. Has anyone been in a situation like this? If so, could you give any advice on the best way to proceed? I'm quite interested in this line of my family tree as it seems as they're might be some kind of Huguenot connection and I'm quite eager to either confirm or refute that. It looks like I might just be waiting for a lucky break . I've been looking over the family tress at Ancestry.de in the hopes of finding someone with ancestors in the right time/place that could be related to mine, but, haven't had any luck. Does anyone with superior knowledge/ experience have an ace up their sleeve that could be helpful here?

Many Thanks

Faye.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1823 German marriage record.
« on: Thursday 13 February 14 00:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone could help me. I'm looking at the marriage  record of my ggg grandparents in Eschwege, Hesse in 1823. I know that it says David Berlepsch and Margaretha Philippine Morell were married and it states that Margaretha came from Friedrichsdorf. I already know that David's father was Christoph Berlepsch and at the time they are working as carters. I am particularly interested if it names Margaretha's parents at all as it would really help me track her down. It looks as if might be saying that Margaretha's father was Wilhelm Morell, but, I can't make it out for sure. It also looks as if it has been annotated at the side to include the birth and death date of the couple. I already know David was born in 1797 and died in 1837. Anyone who is better at deciphering than me and could confirm any of that would be a great help.

Many Thanks

Faye.

Dublin / Mitchell/Buckley Family.
« on: Monday 02 December 13 22:28 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for some more information on the Mitchell family from Dublin. My grandfather Valentine Mitchell was born in Dublin in 1909. His father was James Mitchell and his mother Christina Buckley. However, I don't know much about the family beyond that. I think James' parents were James Mitchell and Elizabeth Dunne. I would love to know more about the Mitchell and Buckley families. I'd also like to solve the mystery of what happened to my grandfather's younger brother Patrick, who seems to disappear from family memory after the 1911 census. I can't find a death certificate for him.

Also more generally what are the best places to contact for record ordering and church books in Dublin? I have experience finding records in Westmeath and Belfast. But, this will be my first time really trying to find my Dublin based ancestors. Many thanks for any answers.

Durham / Maria Carter birth record. Stockton or Hartlepool
« on: Monday 02 December 13 20:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone could help me. I'm trying to find a bit more about the birth and family my ancestor Maria Carter. I know a great deal about her later life. I know she's working as a domestic servant of some kind in the 1841 census. She gets married to a Ralph Pounder in 1850 and is living with him in Stockton in 1851. Unfortunately Ralph dies in a accident in 1854 and Maria is in the Stockton Workhouse with her children in the 1861 census. She also appears to have had an illegitimate child in 1860. She gets a job in Norton Iron furnaces and in 1862 marries my ggg grandfather Charles Berlepsch (a German immigrant also working at the furnace). My gg grandmother Annie Christiana Berlepsch is born in Stockton in 1862. The family later move to Liverpool, where they remain until Maria's death in 1895.

The problem comes when I try to trace Maria's family back further. I know from her 1862 marriage  record to Charles that her father was William Carter and he was a seaman. He was also deceased by the time of that marriage. However, I am struggling to find a birth record for her. The complicated part is that her birth year darts around from 1825 to 1831 on census records, although, her age on her marriage record suggests a birth year of 1826/7. Also, although,  in most of the census records her birthplace is listed as Stockton, in one instance her birthplace is listed as Hartlepool. So, i'm at a bit of  a loss as to how to track her family down further. I've not been able to find any likely candidates in any records available online. Any ideas at how I can narrow things down?

Thanks alot!

Europe / Friedrichsdorf, Hesse. Huguenots.
« on: Saturday 23 November 13 03:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Just looking for a bit of advice . I've been looking into my ancestor Margarethe Philippine Morell (b. abt 1797 in Friedrichsdorf, Hesse.) According to the genealogist I worked with in Eschwege (she was married there in 1823) she is certian to be a Huguenot descendant in some form. This is due to her middle name and surname being of French origin and that she came from Friedrichsdorf, which was a Huguenot settlement. I have found an email for the library record office, but, have recieved no reply for my request for help (it has been  a good few months now). So, for anyone familiar with Huguenot migration to Germany, or who has any knowledge of the general area, is there any other way I can get my hands on information about her family?  I've had no luck locating a family book via Familysearch yet.

Many Thanks.

Europe / Eschwege, Germany.
« on: Wednesday 18 September 13 01:03 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I've posted a couple of times on this sub-forum about my ancestor Karl Friedrich (or Charles Frederic) Berlepsch, born in 1832. I have since discovered through a german newspaper report that he came from  Eschwege in Northern Hesse. This newspaper report also revealed that he had fled to Britain as a way of desertion from the Hessian army. However, I am still struggling to trace his family any further. Although, I know his father's name via his marriage certificate in the UK. For those who know a little more about German records, does anyone have any idea where the records for Eschwege (19th century) are housed? Are they still in local parishes or are they at a state archive? Also does anyone have any idea how I might go about finding more about his time in the army (I know from the newspaper he was a Fusilier).

Many Thanks

Faye Mitchell

Europe / Immigrated from Germany 1850's
« on: Monday 13 May 13 03:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I was just wondering if anybody could provide me with any information on the availability of German emigration records in the 1850s. I'm  trying to find my ancestor (born  in Germany in 1831 came to the UK sometime in the 1850s). I can't find him in any German BMD records or any naturalisation records in the UK. I haven't attempted to look at Church records as i'm not sure the exact location of his birth. I'm hoping if I could find him leaving Germany, this might provide the information I need.

England / Ann Green's Mother
« on: Sunday 21 April 13 18:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Could anyone help me in figuring this one out. My ancestor is Ann Green born in Liverpool in 1822, her father was James Green, a fisherman, born in 1787 in Woodchurch Lancashire (now part of Birkenhead). The problem i'm having is that her baptism records that her mother was also Ann Green. I have found a marriage between this James Green and an Ann Latham in Liverpool in 1807. So, I assumed that was her mother. Now, the problem I have is that I found James Green in 1851 cenus living with his wife Ann born in London. However, this Ann is listed as being born in 1798. Which would make her too young to be the Ann Latham James married in 1807. Therefore, i'm wondering if Anne Latham died and James married again to another Ann. Therefore, with no surname on the 1822 baptism i'm wondering if James did get married again, which Ann is Ann Green's mother Ann Latham or Ann from London. Or could it just be a mistake on the 1851 census and they're one and the same and she was really born in 1788?

I have tried looking for a death or another marriage for the right James Green . But, haven't found much. I've also tried looking into possible siblings, but, with many Greens running around it's a bit confusing.

Thanks

England / Age recorded as minor on marriage certificate?
« on: Wednesday 17 April 13 18:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I guess I just wanted to verify this with someone who is more experienced than me. But, I have an ancestor who's age is recorded as being a minor on her marriage certificate in 1840. Her husbands age is recorded as being of Full age. Am I right in thinking this means he was over 18 and she was under 18? I know that what age is considered to be a minor has changed over time, so I just wanted to make sure I was understanding this correctly.
