Dear All,
I attach a screenshot of a section of the 1851 Census. The image shows the birthplace of my nth great-grandfather James William (Oddington, Gloucestershire) and his wife Mary Williams, nee Keen. I just cannot decipher the name of the village/town where she was born. Censuses from other years are no help either - 1841: just Oxfordshire; 1861: completely mis-transcribed as Brighton, Sussex; 1871: Oddington, Gloucestershire (a duplication of her husband's birthplace) and I believe they were both dead by 1881.
I would be extremely grateful for any help in deciphering the name.
Many thanks.

Armed Forces / Army Service Corps 1st Indian Cavalry Division
« on: Thursday 09 February 17 13:30 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching my great-grandfather Alfred Bunt. I have a copy of his Army Service Records but I'm having trouble deciphering them. I know that he enlisted in the Army Service Corps in 1900 when he did three years in the Colours and then nine years in the Reserve. He then re-engaged in the Reserves in 1912 for a period of four years which was then, of course, superseded by events. His Army No. was T16620 - Horse Transport where he was a groom and driver and he was mobilised in Dublin on 24th August 1914. From a brief record of a court-martial for drunkenness and attempting to strike a superior officer, it would appear that he was attached to the 1st Indian Cavalry Division, later the 4th Cavalry Division (this would tie in with a photograph that we have of him with an Indian soldier).

What I would like to know is, is there anyway of finding out where exactly he would have been stationed during the First World War and would he have seen any fighting? I know he was on the Western Front and I understand that the Indian Cavalry Division were used more as unmounted infantry in the trenches than cavalry, but I can't seem to find out exactly where. I have the names of the G.O.C.s on the record at the time of his court martial on 20/06/1916 - A. E. Lundon, and E. C. Hodgson and Major General A A Kennedy. Also, would his court martial have been written up in the war diary and so, would it be worth my while getting hold of a copy it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.

I'm trying to locate William SOLOMON married 29/08/1822 to Margaret HOCKEY Mevagissey on the census. I have dates for marriage and baptism of children from Mevagissey Parish Records CD:
Mary Ann 1826
Elizabeth 1829
Melinda 1832
William G 1835
Amelia 1838
John 1841 (I think).

I can't seem to locate any of them on the 1841 census. My ultimate aim is to investigate Margaret. I can't find any births/baptisms of any HOCKEYs so I'm wondering if she was, in fact, HAWKEY, as there are a couple of candidates in the St Columb Major area. I was hoping to find her on the 1851 census to see if that was where she was born, but I can't even find the family on the 1841.
I'm aware of the OPC censuses, which are brilliant, but I'm using GR to do the initial searches to narrow down parishes to look in, as you have to search each parish separately on the OPC - the trouble is, that the results from one don't seem to match the transcriptions on the other :( For example, a Margaret Solomon, born 1796 in Cornwall, located in Truro, St Clement, listed on GR is nowhere to be found on the corresponding transcription on the OPC.

What am I doing wrong? I'm tearing my hair out. Please help.

Purdie

PS I did find one William/Margaret combo at a place called Black Hill, I think, but the children didn't seem to match up (there was a Simon and a Josiah).

Hello

I'm trying to trace the family of James WILLIAMS, born Oddington 1807. He was married to Mary, with children Elizabeth, Hannah, Samuel, Joseph, Priscilla and Mark. He was a railway labourer. I'm especially interested in mother Mary's birthplace and the address where they were living as I'm planning a trip to Oddington very soon.

I have a feeling that this is the last time they appear on the census as I have searched for them in subsequent years and have come up with nothing.

I would be very grateful if someone could help.

Many thanks.

Hello,
I was wondering if someone could please help? I'm searching for the baptism of Caroline ELLIS (about 1822) in Sutton in Ashfield so that I can find out the name of her mother.
She is recorded on the 1841 Census living in Sutton in Ashfield with her father Samuel ELLIS (but no mother - presumably dead?). She married Joseph BRAILSFORD in 1843 and lived to the ripe old age of 82.
Samuel ELLIS was baptised in 1782 in Sutton in Ashfield, son of Charles ELLIS and Emma DAUBNEY. I would imagine that he was married some time between 1800 and 1822.
Unfortunately, the IGI is coming up blank. I would be so grateful for any help!
Thank you.

Hi,
I know this is an extremely long shot but...if anyone has access to this book, I'd really appreciate a look-up for Dorothy McKENZIE.
I've so far drawn a blank on finding her baptism record and, therefore, her parents. I know that she was born in Alnwick in 1810. She married William GALLON in 1833. I'm hoping that she went to school in Alnwick...
Thank you, Purdie

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Baptism Lookup please - Alnwick McKENZIE
« on: Saturday 30 March 13 11:48 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the baptismal record for Dorothy McKENZIE in Alnwick around 1810 but have so far had no luck. She married William GALLON in Alnwick in 1833 and lived in Bolton/Edlingham. She died in 1880. I suspect her father was named Andrew McKENZIE for no other reason than that her first son was named Andrew and that I found an apprenticeship paper in Alnwick in 1812 for an Andrew McKenzie (he was the employer).
I would be really grateful for any help.
Thanks, Purdie  :)

Hi. I'm hoping someone can help with a brick wall that we've come up against.
William Dickman married Alice ? probably in the early 1820s. Alice was born in Whissendine in Rutland in about 1796 (although we can't find a birth record). They lived in Melton Mowbray where he was a publican, first at the Three Horse Shoes Inn and then at the Crown Inn. We believe he died between 1832-1835. Alice went on to marry Thomas Campion.
I'd be really grateful for any help!  :)
Thanks, Purdie.
