Waterford / Death 1864, but death certificate not found - any ideas?
« on: Tuesday 24 September 13 19:56 BST (UK)  »
Headstone of James Moran in Ballygunner says that he "died 14th September 1864, aged 80 years".
James lived in Waterford City.
Unfortunately I cannot locate a death certificate for James.
The nearest that I found was a death cert for James Moran, Waterford, age 86. This turned out to be a farmer from Mooncoin - not the James which I was looking for, all of whose children were baptised in Waterford City, and who only lived to 80'yrs.
I'd really appreciate any ideas as to why the death cert does not appear to be listed ?

Waterford / Graveyards in use in 19th Century Waterford City?
« on: Wednesday 03 July 13 23:28 BST (UK)  »
I'm very lost when it comes to understanding what graveyards were in use in the 2nd half of the 19th century Waterford City, and where to find relevant records for these. Hopefully someone can help. Drove to Waterford once to search - a lot of wasted time and effort. Planning another trip and would love plan the trip constructively.

1. In which graveyards could a Catholic from the Manor Street/Beresford Street area have been buried between about 1840-1900? Names, locations and religion would be wonderful.

2. Is it the case that some Catholics were buried in COI graveyards? If so, would the COI death records contain these people's death records?

3. When did Ballygunner Cemetry begin to be used to bury city dwellers?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. !!...

Waterford / Baptism sponsors and marriage witnesses?
« on: Sunday 26 May 13 11:08 BST (UK)  »
When looking at baptism and marriage records I try to and have been successful in finding associations between ancestors by spotting common baptism sponsors and marriage witnesses.

I've often asked myself the questions:

Who typically were baptism sponsors on old (pre 1850) church baptism records? Would they typically be a person the same age or generation as the parents?
Brothers/ sisters / friends of the child's parents OR parents/uncles/aunts of the parents of the child???

Who typically were marriage witnesses appearing on old (pre-1850) church marriage records?
Parents of those getting married? OR Friends/brothers/sisters of those getting married.???

I have managed to successfully associate families with these but would be far more successful if I knew the answers to these two questions. It's been a big question on my mind but never thought to ask here. Hope that these answers help all if anyone can answer them...

D.P. Moran was  an important Irish journalist, activist and cultural-political theorist born in Waterford in Manor street Waterford City in 1869. His father was James Moran a builder and his mother was Elizabeth Carey/Carew. His parents were married in St Johns parish in 1842.

I wonder has anybody traced his ancestry due to the fact that he was significant?

The reason why I ask is because my great great grandfather John Moran was DP Morans uncle. As such we share common ancestors. Unfortunately, having tried everything I can't past my great great grandfathers John Morans marriage in 1829 in St Patricks Waterford.

I believe that I have the death cert for John in 1881 in Waterford city but am stuck now.
I have all the relevant church records available from RootsIreland.

Anyone offer any advise on how to move back with John or find a research done on D.P. Moran?

Thanks

Waterford / 1829 Catholic/Protestant marriage mystery
« on: Wednesday 24 April 13 18:13 BST (UK)  »
Records show a marriage of John Moran / Margaret Dempsey in a Protrstant church Waterford city in November 1829. Another marriage shows a couple of the same name married in Catholic church in Carrickmon Suir in August 1830. All baptism certs for children to parents of these names are in St Johns Catholic parish Waterford city. One of these children my great grandfather.

Is it likely that John and Margaret were married in both churches?

If so does it indicate that one had been a Protrstant, one Catholic?

I believe John died 1881 but can't burial record or grave
