Occupation Interests / Inland Revenue Police Register at National Archives, Kew
« on: Saturday 20 February 16 15:54 GMT (UK)  »
I have spent almost 4 years trying to track down my gg grandfather, Edward Hay.
He lived in Coleraine, Co Londonderry, from the time of his marriage (if not before) in 1831 until his death in 1890.  On his marriage record, he is described as a 'policeman' and I was hopeful of finding him in the Royal Irish Constabulary register; but he's not there.
A genealogist has suggested Edward may have been a revenue policeman, the register of which, I understand, is in Kew.  These records have not been digitised and it requires someone in person to visit/look up.
I live in Belfast!  :'(
Is there any other way of accessing these records, can anyone tell me?
I would be so grateful for any help or guidance.
Thank you.

Surrey / Edith Maude Moorhead
« on: Saturday 02 May 15 17:24 BST (UK)  »
I am very keen to learn more about Edith Maude Moorhead.
She was born approx 1874 in Clapham, Surrey, and died 18 October 1954 in Sussex.
Her parents were William Moorhead, born approx 1837 in Co Down, Northern Ireland, and Jane, born in Govan, Scotland.
She married John Rutherford Moorhead (my great grandfather) between 1931 and 1935. They may have been 1st cousins. I understand they lived in Belfast until she was widowed in 1935, at which time she may have returned to her family in England.  She had a brother, Hercules Walter Moorhead who died in 1963.
This search is more complicated for me as I live in Belfast, so any help anyone can give me would be most gratefully received.
Thank you

Ireland / 19th century police service records in Northern Ireland
« on: Saturday 16 November 13 20:35 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me, please?

I am researching Edward (Ned) Hay (Coleraine) c1808 - 1890, who is recorded as being a policeman on his marriage entry in 1831.  He was married in New Row Presbyterian Church, Coleraine, to Margaret Taylor.

Could anyone tell me:  are individual police service records held anywhere and, if so, how would I go about accessing Edward Hay's?

Any help or suggestions would be very, very welcome and gratefully received.
Thank you.

Down / William Moorhead of Carnew
« on: Friday 24 May 13 21:58 BST (UK)  »
My great x3 grandfather, William Moorhead, had 2 sons (that I know of):

Thomas Moorhead (c1809-1883) m Eliza Jane Barron of Lisnaward, Dromore in Aug 1850.
Rev Robert Moorhead (1814-1898) m Eliza Ann Lowry of Smithboro', Co Monaghan in Dec 1844. He was the minister at Garvaghy Pres Church 1844-87.

The Belfast Newsletter describes both sons as being from 'Carnew House' at the time of their weddings, and the parish record for each marriage names the groom's father as William.

Would anyone be able to shed any light at all on William?  I'm a bit stuck!

Any information would be tremendously welcome.
Thank you.

Antrim / David Mack (c1797-1864) of Lisburn
« on: Saturday 18 May 13 15:24 BST (UK)  »
I'm hoping for help, please - I've ground to a halt.  :)

David Mack was born circa 1797 and died 29 Feb 1864.  He married Margaret McCall in Lisburn in Sept 1828.  They produced 8 children (6 boys and 2 girls), one of whom was Hugh, my husband's great x2 grandfather.  David was a woollen merchant in Market Square in Lisburn.

I would love to track down David's parents but am having some difficulty.  Any help or suggestions would be enormously welcome.

Thank you in advance.

Derry (Londonderry) / Adelaide Finlay Elder (c1850-1913) Coleraine
« on: Thursday 16 May 13 12:10 BST (UK)  »
Adelaide Finlay Elder was my great grandmother.  She was born circa 1850 and died 12 May 1913.
She married James Hay 20 Sept 1886 in Portstewart Presbyterian Church, Ballyrashane, and they produced 4 children, 3 of whom survived.  Their son, Edward James Hay, was my maternal grandfather.
The parish record shows Adelaide's father to be Thomas Elder, a farmer.
Would anyone be able to share any information on Thomas Elder - sadly that's as much info as I have.
Thank you in advance.

Down / Barron family of Dromore
« on: Monday 13 May 13 11:57 BST (UK)  »
Eliza Jane Barron (1833-1908), my great x2 grandmother, was the daughter of William Barron and (I think) the granddaughter of James Barron.
I believe her to be a direct descendant of Archibald Barron who signed a long-term lease for land in Lisnaward, Dromore, in 1713, with Earl of Clanwilliam, as this lease is mentioned in her marriage settlement of 1849.
I haven't been able to establish who came before James Barron, and how he might be connected to Archibald Barron of the 1713 lease.  Several indentures formerly on loan to PRONI have been withdrawn and I have now come to a halt.
Any help would be very gratefully received.  Thank you.

Derry (Londonderry) / Hay family of Coleraine
« on: Saturday 11 May 13 12:50 BST (UK)  »
Edward Hay (my great x2 grandfather) has me completely defeated!
He was born (I believe circa 1808, and died 5 May 1890, in Coleraine.
He married Margaret Taylor on 8 April 1831, in New Row Presbyterian Church, Coleraine, and they produced 8 children.  At the time of his marriage, he was recorded as a policeman but, by 1860s, he appears as a coachbuilder in Coleraine.  In his will he refers to his estate at Flowerfield in Portstewart, so he had very strong ties to the area throughout his life.
The church marriage record does not mention his father's name so I have no idea now how to delve further back into the family.  We believe the family originally came over Oban in Scotland but when, we have no idea.
I would be so grateful for any help on how now to proceed.
