Europe / Albert Williamsen..Norwegian Roots & New Zealand.
« on: Wednesday 22 May 13 23:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi there I am trying to trace my great grandfather Albert Williamsen back to Norway. He was born around 1890, birthplace Kragerø, he left Norway and travelled to New Zealand and arrived here around 1907 but from the family stories he sneaked his way into NZ as he jumped ship at some point. He never immigrated fully as far as I know. He also was a Seaman.

Albert stayed in New Zealand and married in 1915 and had about 11 children. On the marriage certificate his Father is William Williamsen and his Mother is Annie Williamsen - her maiden name is Nelson. Albert died in 1965.

I have been looking on Family Search and through the Norway Birth Registers for the Telemark and cannot seem to find him anywhere. Albert was an elusive character and kept 'under the radar' and was always worried that the authorities would find him and send him back to Norway.

Even though his place of birth on the marriage certificate states Kragerø, he may have been born elsewhere in Norway and since I don't have his birth certificate its uncertain. His NZ Alien register just says Norway as birthplace it doesn't give a specific area.

I have also posted here in the New Zealand section about this topic and if you read the posts there you will see that we haven't had much luck in finding him so thought I'd post here and see if anyone could give me some idea on where to look next. Thanks in advance,  :)
Glen

New Zealand Completed Requests / Albert Williamsen.. Norwegian Roots
« on: Monday 20 May 13 11:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone, this is my first post so be gentle with me.. :) I am delving into my family history at long last (being adopted makes it that more 'interesting' too) so far I have found a large amount of information already thanks to blood relatives that are still alive but there does remain questions about my great grandfather Albert Willamsen.

The story goes that he left Norway on a ship, then supposedly jumped ship at some point and arrived into NZ around 1907. Albert married my great grandmother Elizabeth Jane Young on the 8th October 1915 in Nelson. They went on and had about 11 children, the surname was then changed to Williamson to keep things in order.

He was never naturalised but is on the Alien records for 1917, this information I do have and he was living in Waimea/Motueka at the time which would tie in with where he got married.

It appears that they moved to Wellington and pretty lived here from then on, he was a seaman and worked on the wharfs etc but being of a gypsy origin he probably dabbled in all sorts of things.

What I am trying to find is any further information on Albert, I have looked on Archway/Ancestory.com/FamilySearch/Papers Past etc to try and find any traces of him and any links back to Norway but coming up with nothing pretty much.

Albert was born around 1890 in Kraego it seems but his death notice in 1965 states him as being 72 which would mean he was born later around 1893 so I'm picking that's an error somewhere. The 1917 Alien record shows his age at 29 which appears to be correct. The marriage certificate does give his parents names William Williamson/Annie Williamson (nee Nelson).

Any suggestions on where I should look next? I am hoping to pay the Wellington Archives a visit in the near future as they said there could be more information on him possibly but until then any other areas to research would be appreciated.  :)
I've tried a couple of Norway sites that appear to have archive records but the language barrier kind of gets in the way... ;D

Regards,
Glen.
