Staffordshire / Burslem Cemetery
« on: Friday 05 April 19 14:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone had a grave map for Burslem cemetery. I've found a grave on the Staffordshire Burial Indexes in which is buried 3 members of my family. I have a grave reference from the website, does anyone know how I can find whereabouts it is located in the cemetery based on this reference? I have visited many years ago but I had no idea where they were at that time (and the cemetery is huge) so I found nothing. I'm not local anymore, so its not as easy for me to get to it. I'm not expecting a headstone, but I'd like to know whereabouts they are so that when I'm next over I can pop in and say hello
Many thanks

Staffordshire / Colcloughs of Goldenhill
« on: Thursday 15 October 15 12:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm currently researching my direct line of Colclough family of Goldenhill. I am interested in delving deeper into Colcloughs. I am aware of Anthony Colclough who served under Henry VIII and was awarded land in Co. Wexford, but I am interested in the Colcloughs who remained in Staffordshire. I have read somewhere that they owned a mill in Little Chell (approx 1500's), and there was a Manor House somewhere between Goldenhill and Tunstall. There are also the likes of Colclough Lane and Colclough Farm still in Goldenhill. They were obviously an influential family in the area and I am of course interested to see where/if my line fits into this somewhere. Has anyone done any research into the family or could point me in the right direction of any literature on the subject? Many thanks in advance,
Sarah

« on: Tuesday 03 March 15 10:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Is anyone familiar with the history of a minor manor house called Ellerton Grange in or near to Adbaston. I believe that before the Valentine Vickers family owned it, my ancestors the Hacketts were associated with it, but I can't find any information on this,
Many thanks,
Sarah

Staffordshire / Ipstones churchyard
« on: Tuesday 03 March 15 10:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
Is anyone familiar with the churchyard of St Leonards at Ipstones? I have burial records for a number of ancestor's, the last being around 1860 when my branch of the family left the village. I'm wondering if its worth a visit (I'll have to drive over from Warrington), are there many old headstones preserved? I don't mind not finding anything if there are headstones to look at, but I don't want to drive over to find one or two headstones in a field. I understand that the churchyard is closed to new burials now? What condition is it in?
Many thanks in advance,
Sarah

Warwickshire / Can't find George Lawley
« on: Tuesday 28 October 14 09:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, hoping that someone can help. I'm trying to locate a George Lawley on the 1841 census. He was a boot maker/dealer in Birmingham. I have him on the 1851 census living at 20 Court Heneage Street, Aston, Warwickshire with his wife Susan and childrenn Henry, Reuben, Sarah Ann, Frederick Ellen and Edwin (the family emigrated out the USA in 1858). However, I cant find him on the 1841 census. I have his wife and children living at Bloomsbury Place, Duddleston and Nechells, Birmingham. Susan was a boot binder, but George isn't with them and I can't locate him.
Thanks in advance

Lancashire / Stalybridge
« on: Wednesday 21 May 14 22:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone could just clarify for me what county Stalybridge would have come under from 1840-1850? Also, if looking for a birth during these dates, where would they have been registered, sub district etc? I'm not at all familiar with the geography of the area.
Many thanks in advance,
Sarah  :)

Warwickshire / Lawley china shop of Birmingham
« on: Friday 16 May 14 18:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone had any information on the Lawley china shop of Birmingham? There's a family story that's been passed down regarding my great great grandfather William Lawley, who was born in Great Russell Street, Birmingham in 1851. His father, also William, who was a cabinet maker, died of TB in 1852. The story goes that the elder William was part of the Lawley family who owned a large china shop in Birmingham and one or two other towns. The family didn't approve of his marriage, so when he died, his two sons were taken by the Lawley family who paid for their education and looked after them. When their mother remarried, they were allowed back to her as she married a man who had a good job as a colliery manager.
I've not found anything relating to china shops owned by Lawleys at this time (I know that there was a Lawley's china shop which shut down a few years back, I don't know if this is the same firm). I've found William the elder on earlier census and his father was George Lawley who was a shoemaker who emigrated to America, so I don't know if it was one of his brothers that owned the business. Has anyone heard of this business before?
Thanks in advance,
Sarah

The Common Room / Brick wall -please help
« on: Tuesday 13 May 14 08:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I've hit a major brick wall in my research for my great great grandmother, and I don't know where to turn. Please bare with me, it gets complicated! I have my great grandmother's (Elizabeth Tilstone) birth cert in 1872 in Goldenhill, Stoke-on-Trent. Her mother is listed as Mary Tilstone, formerly Moss. Her father is Daniel Tilstone, brickmaker. However, my problem is that Mary seems to change her maiden name and where  she was born between varying documentation, which is making it impossible to trace her.

The year before Elizabeth was born, Mary Moss was  lodging with Daniel and his father in Goldenhill. She has a one year old daughter, also called Mary Moss. The daughters birthplace is given as Staleybridge, whilst her own is listed as Kidsgrove (about 2 miles down the road). I have managed to get the daughters birth cert, and she was actually born in Goldenhill, and the father is not named.

In 1872, Mary marries Daniel Tilstone under the name Mary Coalstone. She doesn't name a father and her illegitimate daughter Mary takes in the Tilstone name.
Over the next 2 years she has 2 children with Daniel, and on their registration she says her maiden name is Moss. She then has 7 more children between 1874 and 1889 and for all she gives her maiden name as Coalstone (or variation of, presumably due to accent/mis spelling - these include Colstone, Coulston, Colstone). Throughout this time, she gives her birthplace as Goldenhill on the census.

Daniel her husband died in 1891, and Mary remarried in 1892 to William Dutton. On this marriage certificate, she says her fathers name is Isaac Moss and records his profession as plate layer. It doesn't state whether he is deceased. From this time on (1901 and 1911), she gives her birthplace as Staleybridge on the census.

Sorry for the long winded description, but I wanted to make sure id got all the details in! I just don't know where to go with this. I can't find an Isaac Moss, plate layer anywhere, but I don't know if I should be looking in Goldenhill or Staleybridge??????? Why would she use 2 names like this and how do I find her pre 1871?????

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated

Sarah

The Common Room / Meaning of the term 'inmate'
« on: Thursday 01 May 14 08:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I've traced my 2x great grandfather, John Watkin, on the 1851 census to Bournes Bank, Burslem (Stoke-on-Trent). He was illegitimate (though his father is named on his birth cert), and he's living with his mother and his 3 siblings (who I think are also illegitimate, his mother apparently being a busy woman!!!). They are living with a family headed by William Pedley (described as head),  the Watkin family are all described as 'inmates'. What does this mean? As far as I know, it's not a workhouse, but many others on the same street are also described as inmates, and appear to be living with families. Are they in service?
Thanks in advance
Sarah
