Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Cause of Death (Scottish Death Record)
« on: Thursday 17 February 22 03:41 GMT (UK)  »
Good Evening

I'm struggling to read the cause of death as shown on a Scottish death record for my 3 x Gt Grandmother, Mary Wilson who passed away in 1856.

Could it read 'cancer' then ????, it's hard to decipher, so any help would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

David

Good Evening

I recently came into possession of the attached photo of my Nana. Sadly, it is quite damaged and showing its age!

I don't have the original, so this is a scanned copy.

I'd be grateful if anyone can 'repair' the damage.

Thank you in advance for any help given.

Kind Regards

David

« on: Tuesday 19 December 17 18:50 GMT (UK)  »
Good evening

I've found a baptism record of a 2 x Gt Uncle, John Hassett from Cloyne Parish, Cork, Ireland from 1861.

I can decipher some of the text but would appreciate help with the rest.

The bit I can read is

22nd John, Thom Hassett Mary Anne Reily but then I struggle with the rest of the line...

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks in anticipation.

Dumfriesshire / Haslanhill(?) and Waterbeck in Parish of Canonbie
« on: Thursday 19 October 17 15:02 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon

I wonder if anyone with local knowledge of the Canonbie area can assist me please?

I'm researching my 'Wilson' and 'Graham' family from this area (and nearby Middlebie). On a birth certificate for George Wilson (son of George Wilson and Eliza Graham) in 1871, it lists his place of birth as what looks like, 'Haslanhill' in Parish of Canonbie. I can't find any trace of this place?? Perhaps I am reading it incorrectly or it is so small, it doesn't show up on any maps? Has anybody heard of this place?

George and Eliza would appear to have been married in 1847 at Waterbeck in 1847, although I can't find any parish records for here. On the birth certificate for one of their other children however, it stated they were married in 1848 at Middlebie, but again, I can't find any trace of their marriage here. Could anyone offer any ideas for sources of further research for their marriage? I've tried Scotlandspeople with no success.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Dumfriesshire / Wilson / Graham Marriage - Middlebie
« on: Tuesday 20 December 16 19:14 GMT (UK)  »
Good evening

I'm researching my 2 x Great Grandparents, George Wilson and Eliza(beth) Graham(e). George was born in Canonbie c 1826 and Eliza was born in Middlebie on 8th Sept 1828.

On their son, Andrew's Birth Certificate (below), it shows details of his parents' marriage (column 5), which to me looks like "1848 Dec at Middlebie".

Unfortunately, I can't find any other formal record to corroborate this, which is making me doubt its accuracy?

Does anyone have access to marriage records for Middlebie who could perhaps check for this marriage in 1848?

Any other thoughts / advice to help trace this marriage would be very much appreciated.

Thank you

David

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Cause of Death?
« on: Thursday 15 December 16 13:54 GMT (UK)  »
Good Afternoon

I've another 'cause of death' query taken from a Scottish death certificate. This time, it relates to a 2 year old little girl.

I can tell it relates to a *** disease of the elbow joint and some sort of abscess but can't decipher the rest.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Thank you

Could anyone please help decipher the cause of death as listed on this Scottish Death Certificate?

The deceased was a 9 year old girl who died in 1874.

Dumfriesshire / Canonbie Church MIs / Burial Records (George Wilson)
« on: Sunday 27 November 16 09:58 GMT (UK)  »
Good Morning

A few years ago I visited Canonbie Churchyard in Dumfriesshire to search for the grave of my 2 x Gt Grandfather, George Wilson... it was a very large cemetery, with many gravestones hard to read... sadly I couldn't find it.

I later found a photo of the gravestone on the internet (I can't now find the site again!) with the transcription...

"In memory of George WILSON who died at Harelaw Garden 22nd December 1874 aged 48 years. Also Eliza wife of the above who died at Blackpool in 24th April 1908 aged – years and is interred in Blackpool cemetery. Also Agnes who died 28th September 1855 aged 20 months. Also Helen who died 6th May 1874 aged 9 years. Also Mary who died 25th March 1878 aged 27 years. Also Agnes who died 15th September 1879 aged 23 years."

This is definitely the grave I was looking for and in the next few days, I am in the Canonbie area again and would like to re-visit the churchyard again and try to find the grave.

I just wondered if anyone had burial / MI records / plans for Canonbie Church which could perhaps help me to find the location of the actual grave? As I say, it's a very big graveyard and a little bit like trying to find a 'needle in a haystack' if I don't have a clue where to start!

Any help gratefully received.

FH Documents and Artefacts / Marriage Licence Query
« on: Wednesday 11 May 16 10:28 BST (UK)  »
Good Morning

I've obtained the following two documents excerpts from FindMyPast which relate to the marriage of my 4 x Gt Grandparents at Wybunbury, Cheshire in 1794.

Am I correct in saying that these documents are the actual 'Marriage Licence' for the betrothed couple? Also, would it be normal practice for the male party (and one other) to enter into a financial recognisance, in this case £500? This seems a tremendous amount of money for 1794?

I know that the named, 'James Palin' is the groom but would I be correct to assume that the named 'Thomas Palin' would be James' father? I note that the bride's father is specifically named as such as 'Nathaniel'.

I've only ever seen the basic marriage register records before, so these documents are new to me.

Many thanks

David
