Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Berlin Wool Business, Holdenhurst/Christchurch
« on: Monday 20 August 12 00:12 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor who was living at Seymour Lodge, Richmond Hill, Holdenhurst on the 1891 census.  She describes her occupation as assistant in berlin wool business.  There would appear to be a housekeeper at this address and about eight girls working in the berlin wool business.  Been trying to find some background info on this berlin wool business but have drawn a blank.  Can anyone out there with local history knowledge fill in any details.

Anything, however small, greatfully received.

Thanks

United States of America / Worcester Mass Death Records
« on: Saturday 05 March 11 16:25 GMT (UK)  »
I have been attempting to track my gt grandfather's half sister Honor Tingman nee Ward for many years.  I have recently established that she left the UK for Canada, married there and then when her husband died went to live with her daughter in New York.  Last sight is in Worcester Mass around 1943 and I guess her death could have been around this time.  Anyone out there know where I might find death records for Worcester for this time frame.  This would be the last piece of the jigsaw.  My father first started the search some twenty odd years ago and it would be lovely to bring it to a concusion.

Many thanks

Armed Forces / Derby Army
« on: Monday 19 October 09 11:24 BST (UK)  »
I have a letter dated 1916 obviously written from the trenches during WW1.  Not a great deal of content but enough to have established who the writer was.  But he talks of the Derby Army.  Have done a bit of googling and established that Lord Derby was Minster of War during WW1.  Anyone heard the phrase Derby Army and know whether it relates to Lord Derby's enlistment plans ?

Armed Forces / Boer War - George Richard Albery
« on: Monday 19 October 09 11:21 BST (UK)  »
Trying to unravel a bit of a mystery.  Believe George Richard Albery might have served in the Boer War but are there any records to confirm this?  Found him on the 1891 but by 1902 on the death of a child, he is quoted as the father, a deceased soldier.

I am looking for the marriage of an Ada Jerski.  Free BMD has the entry for Jun Q 1891 St Pancras under ref 1b 203.  I have requested certificate from GRO who have told me that there is no marriage for Ada under this reference.  I have subsequently looked at the original index and although I would also have transcribed it as 1b 203, the last character is not altogether clear and could be an 8 as opposed to a 3.

This is the first time that I have found a stumbling block on the GRO index and when I entered the ref no alone on the Free BMD search engine, I came up with umpteen marriages for umpteen years under this reference.  It made me realise that I dont understand the indexing or registration system at all.  I thought that 1b stood for the volume and 203 the page so can anyone enlighten me because there are marriages years earlier than 1891 with this ref.

I would dearly love to find this marriage to complete this tree but I am not sure that the purse strings can stretch to asking GRO to do a blanket search.

Any help gratefully received.

Many thanks

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Red Fire Station
« on: Monday 13 July 09 12:35 BST (UK)  »
This is an extremely long shot but does anyone out there know of the location of a fire station, known as the red fire station, which was opposite a church somewhere in Essex.  Most likely West Essex border area with Herts or bordering the London boroughs.  Date 1940s.

Any help much appreciated.

United States of America / Death in Waltham, Mass
« on: Wednesday 11 March 09 07:52 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone point me in the right direction to find the death of an Honor Tingman in Waltham, Mass.  Last documentary evidence is that she was alive in 1943 but death could possibly be late 1950s.  Born UK 1871.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Cheers
